President Joe Biden is commuting the sentences of roughly 1,500 people who were released from prison and placed on home confinement during the coronavirus pandemic and is pardoning 39 Americans convicted of nonviolent crimes. It’s the largest single-day act of clemency in modern history.
The commutations announced Thursday are for people who have served out home confinement sentences for at least one year after they were released. Prisons were uniquely bad for spreading the virus and some inmates were released in part to stop the spread. At one point, 1 in 5 prisoners had COVID-19, according to a tally kept by The Associated Press.
The state of Florida has given more than 100,000 workers extra days off for the holidays.
Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Wednesday that all state workers will get an additional three days off this holiday season.
'In addition to Christmas Day and New Years Day, our state workers will get three extra days off - December 23, 24 and 31 to spend more time with their families and loved ones this holiday season,' Desantis wrote on X. The governor said he decided to give the early gift to Floridians because the state 'is in great shape,' and he wants 'to reward our state employees.'
The commute home for thousands of New Yorkers became the thing of nightmares when they got stuck underground for hours after a power outage stranded two F trains — forcing them to evacuate through the subway tunnels and service exits.
Approximately 3,500 straphangers spread between the two trains had to be rescued by firefighters when the power went out around 5:30 p.m. between the Jay Street/MetroTech and Hoyt-Schermerhorn stations, according to the MTA.
The two F trains were in between stations and couldn’t move without the power, leaving commuters stuck without AC in the tunnel for more than two hours before FDNY personnel were able to get to them.

Voice of America is a media network broadcast internationally in over 40 languages. It is funded by the U.S. government and provides “news, information, and cultural programming through the internet, mobile and social media, radio, and television.” It originally debuted during World War II in 1942 to advance U.S. news and communications worldwide. Lake, who previously was a news anchor in Arizona from 1999 to 2021, left the media to pursue a political career. A political neophyte in 2022, she won the Republican nomination for Arizona governor that year.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) said Democrats are hoping to give amnesty to some 13 million illegal aliens to flood the United States workforce with low-wage foreign workers with whom working and middle class Americans must compete for jobs.
During a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing this week, Hawley blasted a Democrat witness for his pro-amnesty position despite the majority of Americans supporting deportations.

ProPublica said they were pursuing a story about whether Hegseth had been admitted to West Point as he claimed. They said they had contacted West Point and been told on the record, twice that they had no record of Hegseth being accepted. They then said they didn't run with the story when Hegseth produced a letter showing he had been accepted.

President-elect Donald Trump called it a "great day for America as it will end the Weaponization of what has become known as the United States Department of Injustice" and promised his new administration "will now restore the rule of law for all Americans."
Trump also signaled his support for Kash Patel, his nominee to succeed Wray as FBI director.

The boss of the parent company that oversees UnitedHealthcare called murdered former CEO Brian Thompson 'one of the good guys' in a memo to staff.
Luigi Mangione, 26, was taken into custody on firearm charges Monday afternoon at the fast food joint in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after he allegedly shot and killed Thompson, 50, outside of a Manhattan hotel.
In the aftermath of the shooting, many expressed online outrage over the company's history of rejecting necessary treatment - especially under Thompson - as they praised the gunman for his actions.
“The immigration surge of the past few years has been the largest in U.S. history,” the New York Times admitted five weeks after the nation’s voters rejected the Democrats’ wealth-shifting migration policy.

Both Daniel Penny and Luigi Mangione were born in 1998, the year that President Bill Clinton was impeached over the Monica Lewinsky scandal and three years before 9/11.
They were raised less than 250 miles apart: Penny on Long Island, and Mangione in Towson, Md., the only sons to loving families.
Penny is the middle child of three sisters, and Mangione has two younger sisters.

That question really sums up this interesting column by Thomas Edsall. His thesis is that Democrats are in real trouble because the only path out of the current quagmire the party is in would be to moderate.
