Dollar Tree can't keep up with Bidenflation, changing consumer habits, and competition from other discount retailers — and will close nearly 1,000 of its Family Dollar locations around the country. The company announced the move this week following disappointing quarterly results.
Reuters reported Wednesday that the discount chain has been "struggling to deal with a shift in consumer spending to lower-margin essentials from higher-margin discretionary products like home decor, electronics and toys."
"The discount store chain said it would close about 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of fiscal-year 2024 and 370 more over a period of a few years along with 30 Dollar Tree

You never know if the items you want will be in stock, in my experience. And there's usually only 1 cashier. The convenience and cost savings (which is no longer significant) is not worth the aggravation.

Maybe if they re-branded themselves to "Out-of-wedlock Dollar" they would attract their main clientele back into the fold.

In the era of Bidenflation, the so-called "Dollar Tree" raised it price 25% so the $1 items went up to price point that many will not pay. Items in other stores like Walmart charge more for essentially the same item.
Dollar General seems to be doing okay, and many of them are like grocery convenience stores like the small "Neighborhood Wal-mart" stores so you do not have to venture into the Supermarket. When Sam Walton was alive, he prioritized putting American made items in the store whenever possible.
Since Sam died, Wal-mart has turned largely into a store filled with primarily Chinese made items, or things from Canada or Mexico as major companies have outsourced their once "brand name" products to manufacturing that does not have to worry about paying health care costs of pensions for employees.
In the face of rising inflaton beyond single digits, there are values to be had at the dollar general, family dollar/dollar tree stores if one is a smart shopper.

Huh. And they just opened a new Family Dollar store (before, the building was a Safeway grocery store that couldn't cut it) in Grand Junction, Colorado. On average, maybe 10 cars parked in front of this new store during the day.

My wife loves the Dollar General close to us. Clean and easy to pop in when you just need a dozen eggs or a few items. We only use the big grocery stores for when we need to stock up for a week. Even then, the big stores are a hassle since they won’t open enough cashier manned registers and seem to be forcing more and more to self-checkout to save payroll. Our little grocery store home-delivered when I was a kid 75 years ago. I still remember my mom calling in the order and having a guy bring it in his pickup. He also brought the bags in and helped her put up something heavy like a sack of flour if needed. Still remember his name (Ralph). I wonder if there isn’t a place for something like that now? Maybe available now in big cities with boutique grocery stores. I know there are some moves going on that way today. It was certainly convenient and something a lot of people would pay extra for.

All of the Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores near me are busy. Their problem is staffing. They are often short staffed and have had to shorten hours or close due to lack of staff. While they could raise the pay, they still have the problem of nobody wanting to work.

I suspect they took advantage of the bad numbers to close stores in areas with high theft and violence rates.

Growing up in rural WVA one of my mom's favorite stores was Family Dollar. She'd always buy my siblings and I a toy and I loved back to school shopping. Walmart didn't exist and Kmart was the big box king. Good memories helping my mom get items off the shelves. Fast forward to today. My neighborhood just opened up a Dollar Tree Family Dollar combo store and the stand-alone FD store in the nearby city just got refitted to sell groceries. They all seem to be doing fine. It was sad to see the mom-and-pop grocery store close when Dollar General built a store right across the street from them but that's business, I guess.

The Dollar stores around me are doing quite well. I shop there for our church food pantry since they pretty much carry the same brand names as the large chain stores. I agree with the comments about staffing - almost never enough people there to service the customers and stock the shelves. I have learned to check the expiration dates before purchasing, as inventory control is not their strong suite. Still, I save a ton of church money by shopping there.

They used to sell most items for $1. Last year they increased their prices on most items to $1.50. Bidenomics.
