The US Marine Corps’ deadliest sniper, Charles “Chuck” Mawhinney, who went nearly two decades avoiding any recognition for his kill record until it was revealed in a book, has died. Mawhinney died at his home in Baker City, Oregon, on Feb. 12, the Baker City Herald reported. He was 75. Born in Lakeview, Oregon, Mawhinney began his legendary career in 1967 after he graduated from high school and enlisted in the Marine Corps that year to fight in Vietnam. Upon joining the service, he attended Scout Sniper School at Camp Pendleton and, following his graduation in April 1968, received orders to South Vietnam on a 16-month rotation, according to the US Marine Corps.

Rest in peace, sir. You did your job well. Snipers were the deadliest soldiers on the battlefield. On average, American troops in line companies expended 50,000 rounds for each enemy killed. For the snipers, every three rounds expended produced two dead enemy, and they could hit from anywhere. One memorable night, Mawhinney, a Starlight scope mounted on his rifle, observed a large group (about 20) of NVA wading across a shallow river. He waited until they were all in the water, then shot the nearest, then the furthest, then the rest of them. Killed them all. Twenty bodies floated down the river. Good shooting. Tough Marine.

I saw an interview with Mawhinney some years ago, when his story came out. He said he wasn't affected by what he did, because he viewed it as saving the lives of his fellow Marines. He said only one thing bothered him all those years later: one NVA that he missed, because someone had fooled with the elevation adjustment on his scope while it was in the armory. What woke him up sometimes in the middle of the night was his thinking "who did he kill? How many Marines died because I didn't do my job?" Semper Fi, Chuck. Rest in peace. You were a good Marine - and that's the highest praise I can give.

An awesome marksman, and in Vietnam, the tradecraft of moving and hiding without detection was a crucial part of the job, or at least staying alive in that job. And the tools then were far less complex than today, and relied on shooter skill and memory and brainpower more than today's equipment. The truly great snipers like Mawhinney and Hathcock were men who understood ballistics, trajectory and wind drift on a level that many others never grasp. Well done, soldier. RIP.

The US Intelligence Community asked foreign spy agencies to surveil 26 associates of Donald Trump in the run-up to the 2016 election, which triggered the allegations that the former president’s campaign had been colluding with Russia, according to a report. Former CIA Director John Brennan identified and presented the targets to the US’s intelligence-sharing partners in the so-called “Five Eyes” agencies – the intelligence-gathering organizations in the US, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand – according to a report published Monday on Michael Shellenberger’s Public Substack.

City cops are getting beaten at a record-setting pace — a disturbing and dangerous trend fueled by radical protests, an influx of criminal migrants, bail reform, anti-cop rhetoric and soft-on-crime prosecutors, experts told The Post. The number of cops hurt by suspects surged 20% in 2022, when 4,724 uniformed officers suffered injuries in attacks, compared to 3,933 in 2021. But the law enforcement nightmare grew worse last year, when 4,077 cops were hurt by suspects in just the first nine months of 2023 — on pace for a record-breaking 5,436 injuries, the latest NYPD stats show. The data for the last quarter of 2023 has not been released.

One of the tricks of knowing when a leftist judge is pulling a fast one is if the decision is really, really long. (snip) Indeed, generally speaking, in my thirty-five years as an attorney, I’ve never seen an appellate court uphold damages so disproportionate to actual injuries suffered—and again, there were no injuries in this case. The fact that there were no injuries in itself means that the case, from ig to zack, denied Trump due process. I don’t see the judgment surviving an appeal, that’s for sure. WASHINGTON - U.S. President Joe Biden has spent years implementing programs to fight climate change by advancing renewable energy and imposing tougher regulations on fossil fuels. Much of that work could go up in smoke if his likely rival Donald Trump beats him at the polls in November, according to Republican policy advisers. Former President Trump, who is on track to clinch the Republican nomination, would re-enter the White House with a raft of executive orders to expand oil, gas and coal development, they said. That would include ending a pause on new LNG export permits, scrapping electric vehicle mandates and once again withdrawing the United States
