Before epilepsy was understood to be a neurological condition, people believed it was caused by the moon, or by phlegm in the brain. They condemned seizures as evidence of witchcraft or demonic possession, and killed or castrated sufferers to prevent them from passing tainted blood to a new generation. Today we know epilepsy is a disease. By and large, it’s accepted that a person who causes a fatal traffic accident while in the grip of a seizure should not be charged with murder. That’s good, says Stanford University neurobiologist Robert Sapolsky. That’s progress. But there’s still a long way to go.

Well, maybe it's true in this man's case, because if he really DID have free will, would he go around with hair & beard like this? Ewwww.

OK. So we’re not responsible for our actions and God is unjust to punish sin. Got it.

This guy is looney tunes. Plus the article is from the Los Angeles Times. They do not do journalism at the Los Angeles Times to be polite.

Okay, Doc, please explain why Singapore doesn't have a graffiti problem. Maybe that problem is eliminated when people have the free will to consider the consequences of receiving an old fashion caning if they are caught tagging the property of others with their so-called art. Without free will, Singapore would look like Detroit.

ahem, comrade doctor but your answer is completely misguided and outright wrong ---
we do have "free will" we just exercise it in the wrong direction but
we have also lost our ability to think logically to the point where giving of ourselves is paramount and nurturing ourselves is of no importance
read Ayn Rand but only if you will do so with an open mind and
not with the mind that has been altered to fit the stereotypical description of a human being as if pertains to us now
God endowed us with Free Will, it says so in many Chapters of the Bible from Old Testament to New Testament, comrade doctor

Did he choose to write this piece or did something compel him to write it? Geez, he’s dumb. Every time he eats, drinks, screws, writes, exercises, cooks, sews, plays basketball, kisses or shakes hands….he is compelled?
Please. Go back to your research, dude, and get a haircut while you’re at it so you don’t reveal your inner hippie.

Since every conscious being builds it's own reality from the stimulus it is capable of processing, Bob Sapolsky, B.S. for short, can only possibly speak for himself.
Every action can be reverse engineered in a precise manner, but never forward predicted the same way. This is where free will exists.

For God's sake, it's Stanford! If your looking for science, look elsewhere. They are one of the thrones of Moon-battery. The only thing they acknowledge is their agenda. If the place fell into a sink hole the collective IQ of the country would rise 10 points.

For a lot of basic functional behaviors, free will is not necessary as an explanation of the choices an individual makes. The behavior is a learned pattern that was effective in the past at attaining a simple goal in the real world. These are chunked to produce more and more complex, but automatic, behaviors.
Where free will is evident is in making choices that require planning and foresight, like what career to pursue or who to marry. Jung divided the individual mind into Logos and Eros. Eros, or passion, animates us to act, but it is blind. Logos, or foresight, sees beyond the present moment to plan, but it is lame. It can't take action toward a goal because it lacks drive or passion. Without Logos, our drives would blindly act for pleasure with no purpose or direction. This ends in self-destruction. Without Eros, our thinking would spin out ideas about what is right or wrong or true in the world but would quickly starve to death from lack of practical actions.

The poor state of journalism and logical thinking. Murder requires specific intent. Someone who suffered a seizure while driving and crashed into pedestrians, killing them, would NOT be charged with murder, but like negligent homicide or manslaughter.

People get all of this confused and I know because I was one of them. There are four choices but only two if you want to live in God's ways. Here they are: free will versus Thy will OR free choice versus His ways (choices) and it is up to you to decide if you want to lean on your own understanding or live in God's ways.
As for epilepsy, people who have it were treated horribly in the past. I hope there is a new landscape for people who have it. . .
