Herman Andaya, the administrator of Maui’s Emergency Management Agency (EMA), had no prior experience in disaster response before taking on his role in the county government’s crisis response agency, according to CBS News. The EMA is reportedly the agency responsible for setting off emergency sirens which did not blare as devastating wildfires engulfed huge swaths of Maui and killed at least 110 people, CBS News reported. Andaya was reportedly hired for the job in 2017, beating out 40 other qualified candidates for the role, according to local outlet Maui Now.

Competence is no longer a consideration in hiring, almost anywhere in government. Some particular race, or ethnicity, or sex or being a relative are far more likely to get a person hired than mere competence. Did this person even show up to the job, or was this just another brudda job that was a no-show-but-get-paid kind of thing?

I guess it was just the ‘fair’ thing to do in giving him the job. He apparently wanted it more than anyone else. And, what does he mean, it’s his ‘belief’ of the sirens purpose? I’m sure it’s purpose is written somewhere in black and white. He just doesn’t know his job.

Wow, zero prior experience in disaster response, huh? Yet, had been in the job since 2017, so should have had all the experience leading up to this incident. His comments are nothing more than a rationalization, justification and excuse for not doing the job properly.

Handling yourself in an emergency is always difficult. If you have no previous experience, you will likely screw things up. That being said, sounding the sirens for any and all emergencies could very well cause confusion. When the siren goes off, is it a hurricane? Is it a fire? Is it a terrorist attack? Is it a tsunami? Are they simply testing the system? One size fits all warning device makes no sense. The headline is misleading, they were not wildfire sirens, they were emergency sirens. There are all kinds of emergencies.

Here we have tornado sirens, all over the county. They get tested at noon on the first Wed of each month. When you hear them, you know that things are getting dangerous, time to head to the basement. Why would anyone want a siren for a hurricane? That's nutso, they take DAYS to hit, not minutes. The concept of a hurricane siren is ridiculous. But an emergency siren, so people can tune to a radio and find out what's up seems pretty reasonable. Ours are single purpose. Tornadoes, which are a sudden threat.

Hawaiian Electric, the utility company whose power line reportedly played a role in the Hawaiian fires, appears to have focused on green energy development while neglecting to adhere to its own assessment that it needed to increase the safety of its existing infrastructure, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday. The company concluded that it needed to take much more aggressive action to ensure that its hardware did not emit sparks after the 2019 wildfire season, which was one of the worst recorded in the island of Maui’s history, according to the WSJ.
