The Giant Food store in Ward 8 of Washington, DC is apparently the only supermarket in that area and now it could end up closing due to rampant theft. People who live in the area are worried that it may end up becoming a food desert. This is where this issue of unpunished crime has been headed for months. How are stores supposed to stay open and operate if they are victims of constant theft? Concerns are growing in Washington, D.C. about some major grocery stores being able to keep their doors open due to shoplifting. During a news conference Friday, D.C. Councilman Trayon White said he spoke

This will be happening elsewhere. It’s only a matter of time as actions with accompanying consequences will be coming home to roost, as it were.

Whut's the big deal, Vern? Work it like Costco does, have everyone at the exit having cart contents checked against receipt. Have the muscle on hand to shut it ALL down (as in door rolled down) if a mob or particularly troublesome party goes apeshyte. Yes, this means extra staff for the exit door (and "emergency response" training for the side/emergency exits), but a fraction of what theft costs if theft can be stopped. And a brief store lockdown? Police there in minutes, doors back open, perps stuffed into cars with hands shackled behind their backs. Good, honest customers would love it.

Ask me tomorrow if I care and the answer will be the same. When Zimbabwe turned to killing and driving out white farmers, the old saying was never more true: The monkeys cut down all the banana trees and now wonder why there are no more bananas. The same will apply in our inner big cities...there will soon no more places to rob and the honest blacks are the ones who will suffer.

I cannot work up any sympathy for people losing a food store caused by the criminal behavior of local residents. When lawbreaking continues to be part of the culture, the downward slide will worsen. This is now common in 'hoods' not only in America but in other countries with large urban minority populations.

I live in a suburb of a large city. Many times that city has guaranteed profit to grocery stores to operate in the "food desert" south of town. None of those stores have lasted much more than a year mainly because of the liability of protecting their employees and their's and their employee's property. Poverty? There are areas of poor whites and browns which do not have crime. it is the culture

Re #41: That's almost correct. It would be completely correct if it read: "A food desert is a just desert." Those two words are pronounced differently, the stress on different syllables. It's in all of our dictionaries. A "desert" (de-SERT) is something that is deserved. A dessert, which may or may not be deserved, is something sweet that we eat after a main meal.

Ever since the end of June, Americans in the media have been chattering about the implications of the Supreme Court ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard. This case, in which several Asian-American students sued the university for racial discrimination, ended with the court ruling for the plaintiffs and banning race-based preferences in college admissions. Already people have had time to argue every question under the sun — is what happened good or bad? More important than most people think, or less important? How aggressively will lower courts enforce it? And so forth.

Judge Tanya Chutkan, the D.C. federal district court's hanging-ist judge when it comes to the January 6 cases, was (quite coincidentally, I'm sure) assigned to Donald Trump's case after Jack Smith essentially indicted him for believing that the November 2020 election was rife with fraud. (That's a belief, apparently, available only to Democrats following elections.) The fact that Chutkan hates January 6 defendants doesn't mean she's anti-Trump. However, Julie Kelly has revealed a trial transcript in which Chutkan openly states her belief that Trump should be in jail. Judges are obligated to abide by rules of conduct and, no matter the jurisdiction.

Insurance actuaries were the first to notice an unprecedented rise in life insurance claims among the healthiest sector of society: working-age people with group life insurance policies. Dr. Pierre Kory writes about the obscene (my word, not his) suppression of discussion and research on this epidemic of death “on the scale of a war or terrorist event” in an article in USA Today and a “longer, less-politically edited version” on Substack. Both essays were co-written Mary Beth Pfeiffer, who first had the idea and did the original research.

In Edgar Allan Poe's short story, "The Masque of the Red Death," a group of nobles wall themselves off from the surrounding country to avoid a devastating plague. Seemingly secure inside their fortified castle, the "elites" live in a state of luxurious indulgence, indifferent to the people suffering beyond their gates. While they throw lavish parties, the rest of their countrymen die miserable deaths. Eventually, however, the "Red Death" finds its way into their "safe space" and eviscerates their fantasy. And because the aloof aristocrats are trapped inside a fortress of their own making, they soon perish.

Fifty years ago, in 1973, a cross-cultural phenomenom occurred. A Spanish folk group from the Basque region lost the Eurovision contest to singer from Luxembourg, who sang a lesser-remembered tune: “Tu Te Reconnaitras,” thus proving that cultural contests are often worthless barometers of taste. The runner-up loser was the group Mocedades which sang “Eres Tú.” Within months the losing, but quite catchy, tune became a worldwide phenomenom. It reached number 9 on the U.S. charts, which was amazing, given our American tendency to live in a bubble of monolingualism. Some translated versions were made, and they were just pitiful.

It’s time to -- well, you know what -- or get off the flippin’ pot. True justice -- unfashionable among most “progressives” -- demands action. And politics -- a dirty word to dainty Republicans -- also demands action. Let’s set aside the sinister Merrick Garland and the plodding, lying apparatchik Alejandro Mayorkas. Progressives have succeeded in draining all semblance of common sense and morality from the Democrat Party. They have also been hammering away at free speech for decades, using college campuses as havens for restrictive speech codes to turn three generations of faculty into critical race pedagogues and their students into ideological neurotics. What emerged as an annoying political correctness in the late twentieth century has blossomed into a full-blown assault on all five rights of the First Amendment. Higher education now seems adrift of its moorings and without a moral compass to bring it back.

He didn't answer questions about the issue when he returned to work on Monday after a weekend at the beach, after avoiding comment on the tragedy this weekend. The president is scheduled to arrive in Lake Tahoe on Friday, August 18 and will stay there until the following Thursday, according to guidance from the White House. But there has been no word on if he'll head further west to see the billions of dollars in damage

Well, that didn't take long. As RedState reported, Joe Biden stunned onlookers earlier on Monday by answering "No comment" to multiple inquiries about the devastating Maui fire. The Hawaiian Island has been battling deadly wildfires, with the death toll currently sitting at 89 people. One would think this would be an all-hands-on-deck affair, much like when a hurricane causes widespread devastation, but the president has been enjoying yet another vacation in Rehobeth Beach, Delaware. That followed two prior vacations that spanned multiple weeks in July and August (and Biden is scheduled to head to Lake Tahoe

Just hours before former President Donald Trump was indicted for a fourth time in Georgia on Monday night, his former political opponent, Hillary Clinton, laughed merrily at him on MSNBC. "All over the country, people are wondering what Hillary Rodham Clinton is thinking watching things unfold in Georgia," MSNBC host Rachel Maddow said Monday to laughs from Clinton. "Oh, I can’t believe this," Clinton said, again breaking out into laughter. "Honestly, I didn’t think that it would be under these circumstances. Yet another set of indictments."

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters at a briefing Monday that there was “zero evidence” that President Joe Biden had “discussed,” or was “involved with,” his son Hunter’s business dealings, now under scrutiny by a special counsel. Jean-Pierre answered questions from reporters on her first briefing in several weeks, and the first since Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed U.S. Attorney David Weiss of Delaware, who was already investigating Hunter Biden, as the special counsel. While avoiding specifics, she said: “They [Republicans] keep turning up documents and witnesses showing the president wasn’t involved, never discussed

Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy said Monday that he would be less attentive to China’s threat to Taiwan once he’s had four years to attain US “semiconductor independence.” “Xi Jinping should not mess with Taiwan until we have achieved semiconductor independence, until the end of my first term when I will lead us there,” Ramaswamy told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. After that, our commitments to Taiwan — our commitments to be willing to go to military conflict — will change after that, because that’s rationally in our self-interest. That is honest. That is true, and that is credible.

Hawaii's governor has said that the terrifying fire tornados that tore though the island's buildings were '1,000 degrees' - as it's revealed warning sirens did not go off. The blazes on the island of Maui have now become the deadliest wildfires in modern US history - killing 93 people - and authorities are still working to identify the victims. Hawaii Gov. Josh Green described the wildfire as a 'fire hurricane' - blowing 80mph winds and reaching temperatures of up to '1,000-degree heat.' Meanwhile, Hawaii Emergency Services Administration said Friday: 'Neither Maui nor HI-EMA activated warning sirens on Maui during the wildfire incident.'

It looks like the background intelligence documents about the Capitol Hill riot have gone the way of certain Secret Service call records, the Capitol Hill pipe bomber’s identity, the ID of the White House cocaine addict, and Hillary Clinton’s bleach bit emails. Key evidence is missing. It’s gone. Vanished. If you’re in any way confused, let’s be clear: this is how a corrupt, banana republic, tinpot dictatorship acts. Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-Ga.) and former President Donald Trump alleged that at least two terabytes of information were not preserved by the Bennie Thompson and Liz Cheney show trial producers. “The more we go in,” Loudermilk told Fox News Digital,

I was not going to write about Oliver Anthony’s brilliant song, Rich Men North of Richmond, because I have nothing worthy to add. The video puts all other commentary to shame. North of Richmond refers to the federal government, which is too large, too powerful and too uncaring. But Mark Antonio Wright, executive editor of the Never Trump National Review, butted in with a Learn-to-Code column attacking Anthony for daring to complain about DC’s treatment of the working class. It lectured Anthony to be more like Woody Guthrie, the Nazi apologist and communist.(Snip)what makes America great are the very things National Review now opposes.
