Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo, considered a rising star among Texas Democrats, will temporarily leave her post leading the state’s most populous county to receive treatment for clinical depression, she announced Monday. Hidalgo said she was diagnosed with the condition in July and checked into an out-of-state facility to undergo treatment late last month. She aims to return to work in early September. “From the beginning of my tenure as County Judge, I have stressed the importance of mental health services,” Hidalgo wrote in a letter Monday afternoon to Harris County residents. “Depression and other mental health illnesses are part of the human condition, and mental health illnesses

While I hope her treatment is successful, I would be remiss to mention that the good people of Harris County, Texas, have been depressed over her administration of their county.

She checked into an out-of-state facility for treatment. Why not a facility in the Medical Center, Houston or Texas? Not exactly open with this, is she?Dems thought they could hide this and not waste all the effort to groom her for a statewide office.

Unfortunately, when you say Lina Hidalgo, I am immediately suspicious. I suspect big money is helping her take a vacation at a spa like facility somewhere very expensive. This must be part of a political plan. It always is with her and her cronies.

Not to make light of her seeking treatment for mental health issues, she seems to be taking a break away from all the corruption that is being exposed about election irregularities of the 2022 election which is bubbling up to a head in Harris County. Even worse, the Houston Independent School District leadership has been taken over by the Texas Education Agency due to overall District low-performing schools not meeting minimum Texas state standards for several years... I pray she gets the treatment she needs to face the work she is supposed to be doing. The HISD is running advertisements trying to poach teachers from other successful school districts in Texas in an effort to improve the situation for students in the school district.

In what was obviously meant to be a Friday news dump, AG Merrick Garland appointed David Weiss as special counsel over the Hunter Biden probe. According to the DOJ, Weiss requested the elevation and will now use it to charge the president’s son in other districts. That led to a lot of different questions. Was the move meant to get a plea agreement in front of a more friendly judge in Washington, D.C.? That seems incredibly likely given how hard Weiss tried to hand Hunter Biden a sweetheart deal in Delaware. Then there’s the House investigation into the Bidens to consider. Would this make it more difficult to force

Attorney General Merrick Garland announcement the appointment of United States Attorney David Weiss as special counsel in the investigation of Hunter Biden yesterday. The Department of Justice has posted Garland’s statement here. Why Weiss? That is a difficult question to answer honestly in public. Indeed, Garland took no questions — ignoring a reporter who asked why Weiss had been elevated to special counsel if he had “ultimate authority” to prosecute, as Garland claimed in sworn congressional testimony earlier this year. Weiss is special. On that we can agree:

House Republicans are seemingly unified in condemning U.S. prosecutor David Weiss’s appointment as a special counsel in the Hunter Biden investigation, including several moderate members of the GOP conference. Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Weiss as special counsel in the “ongoing investigation” into Hunter Biden, “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation.” Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) said he hopes Weiss “gets to the truth,” but expressed concern with his appointment. “I hope Special Counsel David Weiss informs Americans just how many millions of dollars Hunter Biden made on what his ex-partner called an “illusion” of access, and if the President financially benefited,”

The judge presiding over Donald Trump’s 2020 election trial has denied the Department of Justice’s request to issue a protective order preventing the former president from publicly sharing details about his case. While Judge Tanya Chutkan dismissed the DOJ’s request, she did award prosecutors a small win in prohibiting Trump from sharing material deemed “sensitive.” “The defendant has the right to free speech, but that right is not absolute,” Chutkan said during a hearing on Friday morning. “Without a protective order, a party could release that info to the jury pool.”

Ronna McDaniel saw the writing on the wall — Donald Trump, the most popular Republican candidate in history (by far), refuses to quit in spite of the endless legal and political witch hunts — and something had to be done. So Mitt Romney's niece threw a hail Mary, and back in February, McDaniel mulled the idea of a "loyalty pledge" before promptly instituting it. Here's what she had to say at the time about the tactic, during a chummy conversation with CNN's Dana Bash, via Politico:

The new status grants him extra powers to broaden his inquiries – potentially into other states beyond his current patch as US attorney in Delaware.
