Walgreens Stores in Chicago Play Classical
Music to Stop Loitering

Walgreens stores in Chicago decided to play classical music to stop people from loitering. I wonder if the music will then stop people from robbing stores. From the Sun-Times: The Sun-Times this week found classical music greeting customers as they approached the entrance of stores in Greektown, the West Side and River North at 641 N. Clark St. It plays from speakers connected to the building that are covered by a protective screen. Customer reaction and the results appeared mixed. (Snip) A smattering of retailers in other states have reportedly resorted to grand opera, classical’s louder sibling.

Comments:

Although not directly related to the usage of classical music as a deterrent to loitering, there is an interesting quotation from George Bizet (a French composer of the Romantic era of the 19th century) that appears to be ageless at this point in time: "As a musician I tell you that if you were to suppress adultery, fanaticism, crime, evil, the supernatural, there would no longer be the means for writing one note." Walgreen’s might be surprised that some customers would so enjoy the music they would tend to loiter.

Anyone remember the television show The Commish starring Michael Chiklis? One of the episodes dealt with a local small business that was having problems with kids loitering in the parking lot, blaring their nasty music and chasing away customers. The Commish dropped off some opera music to play over the loudspeakers and it chased all the kids away. It was great.

If you want to go further back, I've long considered Flatt & Scruggs' circa 1962 Ballad of Jed Clampett aka Beverley Hillbillies Theme Song to be the first rap song that got massive air play.

I was a Muzak salesman for 30 years, some of my best customers were “corner stores”. Back in the day New Orleans would pull your liquor license if you had to many people hanging in the parking lot. Classical music got the customers in and out quick.

While I love classical music, for many years I was like #4, I could not stand opera. Then (as the university required me to take one more music history course to 'round out' my Engineering education) I took a course in opera. As soon as the professor explained that "An opera singer's Voice is their Instrument", my whole attitude changed, and I began to enjoy opera (at least most of it!). Years ago, playing classical music was used by a number of shopping malls as an effective 'juvenile delinquent repellant'. To survive in areas dominated by today's Urban Thug Culture, I believe that stores will have to go to a pre-order, service window form of operation. Customers pre-order and pre-pay using their smart phone and credit card (what self-respecting Urban Thug or Welfare Queen does not have an ObamaPhone and an EBT card?), then pick up their order at a service window. No customers in the store, or perhaps only 'paid membership' customers in the store, like Sam's Club. Other than that, I don't see how a store can survive. The Thieves blatantly steal them blind, and the city government says it's OK as long as they steal less than $1,000 worth of stuff per trip. Gee, I'm glad I live in a pleasant part of Flyover Country, where American culture still predominates!
