Tucker Carlson interviewed Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Friday at the Family Leadership Summit forum in Iowa, which is showcasing all the top 2024 Republican presidential candidates except front-runner and former president Donald Trump.
Tucker got the ball rolling by asking DeSantis if he would favor legislation banning abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy, similar to the law he recently signed in his own state:
I’m proud to be a pro-life governor, and I will be a pro-life president, and of course, I want to sign pro-life legislation…
We need to develop a culture of life in this country.

DeSantis sounds like a strong conservative to me. The last few sentences are important. I, like many others, believe the democrats are going to take Joe out and put pretty boy Newsom in. Which of our candidates can beat him?

I think he should be fulfilling his job as Governor of Florida, not
running for president.

2028 is DeSantis' time. Not now. Trump is the only one that can fix this mess.

Not to take away anything from DeSantis, but his anti-Trump ad really made me question his judgment. Besides being ill-advised, it was just over-the-top bizarre. When a politician I largely agree with makes me question what on earth he was thinking, that’s not a good sign.

Who in their right mind would want that communist Newcomb for President. He would marry us to China and the USA would immediately become it's surrogate. Want to be told what you can eat, where you can get a job, what you are allowed to do, etc?

I think that the Democrats want Trump to be the Republican nominee because they believe they can beat him again. They know that those on the fence would easily vote for DeSantis and they'd be toast. As much as Trump deserves to win, it's DeSantis the Dems are afraid of.

No DeSantis won’t be ready for 2028 unless another professional politician is wanted to be President! Read my lips no DeSantis in 2028 unless it’s preferred that the deep state status quo is maintained? How many previous professional politicians have made good sounding promises running only to break them once in office? President Trump isn’t a professional politician and he did what he said he would do once in office! DeSantis isn’t cut from the same cloth he’ll be beholden to the billionaires and PACs that fund his campaign! No thanks! I’d rather have Kari Lake or Byron Donalds than DeSantis! JMO

Donald Trump was a gift to us in so many ways. But I just do not believe he can win a national election. He is too scarred (however unfairly) and has little potential appeal beyond his hardcore base. The average half attentive squishy voter has no desire to return to the drama of the Trump years.
We need to look elsewhere if we are to have a shot in 2024, and I believe DeSantis is the way to go - a young and fresh face with a clear conservative message. He doesn't kowtow to the demands of shadowy donors, and he understands that if we do not win in 2024 then 2028 will be meaningless.

Why is DeSantis running for president? Does he think he has momentum and this is the time? What? He appears to be a great governor, but he's also hated by the left. If he became the nominee, the left would go after him as hard as they're going after Trump. If the RINO state owns him, he will be a terrible president.

A lot of hostility here toward DeSantis because he dared to throw his hat in the ring. If everyone believes Donald is set to prevail what difference does it make? He’s been a superb Governor of Florida and is highly qualified. Let him run.

DeSantis cannot fill a rally stadium. He should have been patient and built a national following, before running.

I didn't see any new ground that was plowed in this interview. If DeSantis is to gain more support he needs to establish a clear lane that would differentiate him from Trump. I'm not sure how he can do it. On policy he is very similar to Trump. I'm not sure if it is possible to gain traction by noting that unlike Trump he follows through, speaks far more clearly, doesn't descend into foolish name calling, etc. On abortion I don't know why those running don't celebrate the end of Roe without then promising to nationalize yet again abortion. Trump, very smart in my opinion, so far hasn't proposed nationalizing abortion.

The Washington conservatives...WE call them rinos...will do anything to stop President Trump....and riding on the coat/tails of sanctimonious into power and control is their game...but...the People want President Trump...who doesn't have to promise what he'll do when President 47...he did it all as President 45...so spin your sanctimonious stories...he's a politician and will not help the people...where is he when his state is suffering...he's busy trying to climb the Washington DC ladder...

How anyone could be naive enough to believe DeSantis does not and will not continue to kowtow to his megadonors is beyond me. Do they believe those big donaions are gifts from the heart and he is free to lead as he (and we) may wish? Seriously?

It's good to see so many familiar L-Dotters on this thread. Although we've always been pretty good at maintaining civility in the midst of disagreement, primary seasons sometimes put a strain on that. With that in mind....
I've said in the past that I read #11 posts carefully and, when I disagree with him, I recheck my math. He's being accused of RINO inclinations on other threads for supporting DeSantis. That's just silly. #11's long-standing conservative credentials are available to anyone willing to use the search function (as are mine). So, for what it's worth, my three cents:
1. I fear #11 is right. My support for President Trump does not preclude me recognizing that he would be his own worst enemy if he wasn't so good at creating new enemies to no purpose. But...
2. He also created lifelong political friends by the way he fought for us from 2015 to 2020. I am one of them. I've never seen a President so willing to champion even our lost causes. For that alone, I feel I owe him my support now. However, there is an even more pragmatic reason: I know what Donald John Trump will do if he is elected President because I've seen it. And that is true of no other candidate.
3. Unlike almost everyone else, my misgivings about DeSantis have nothing to do with tariffs, donors, or his potential for RINOplasty. I don't like some things he's done as governor and have said so in excessive detail on another thread. (Weirdly, I agreed wholeheartedly with Trump's criticism of DeSantis over that issue.) Of course, I will support DeSantis if he's the nominee because....
Anybody But Biden.

Thank you for the compliments, # 20. It seems that many people on this board are convinced that only a complete outsider like PJDT is capable of effective governance. If that is the case we are totally screwed because it turns our cause into a One Man Show, when in order to prosper we need new talent coming through the pipeline.
If the Donald wins the nomination he will certainly have my vote, but going down in a blaze of glory is not what I want for conservatism or the U.S.

Any intelligent person looking objectively can see clearly that Trump will be crushed in '24. What we failed to realize last time (I voted for him twice) was how many millions of Americans absolutely loathe him. Nobody really wanted Biden for president. But they would vote for a doddering old fool rather than Trump.
It will all be even worse next time.

I have the very same fears, #23. My biggest worry is it’s already in motion. Huge rallies mean nothing when it’s time for the all mail in and ballot harvesting take place.

#22 It’s not a matter of being a DeSantis ‘fanboy’. There is a concerted effort by a lot of powerful people to keep Trump off the ballot. They may succeed. What then? Sit home on your couch and let Biden win? We can’t afford as a country to do that.
