She is so big, brash and boldly colourful that from some angles she could be mistaken for a cartoon spaceship.
But already Icon Of The Seas, the world's biggest cruise ship which took to the open ocean for the first time last week, has reportedly racked up an all-too-real £5 million in advance sales before her maiden voyage in January.
With the world's largest onboard waterpark – including the first free-fall slide at sea with a 66-degree incline drop – plus 40 bars and restaurants, a 55 ft indoor waterfall, mini-golf course and ice rink, the £1.5 billion Royal Caribbean vessel is 10 ft longer than the current record-holder, current record-holder,

Whatever floats your boat. I'd rather go camping in a national park with wild animals running around the campfire.

Have to agree with #1. I can't say I'd want to shell out that much money to be crammed into to a germ incubator with so many other people. I go on vacation to get away, not pretend I'm a sardine.

These cruise ships are like floating petri dishes. There is no way they can clean all those surfaces

Garish, multi colored, bright plastics.
I'm guessing it was designed by...and for...people on psychedelic drugs.
I'm going to go ona big boat rather than sail myself?
Give me mahogany, brass and crystal.

A beautiful piece of machinery. I cant even imagine the amount of maintenance it would require just to run.
Looks like it would be very crowded and easy to get lost. Still, thats one heckofa boat.

My Senior Prom was held on the Queen Mary docked in Long Beach Harbor. It was like being in the 1930's. That is my idea of a cruise ship.

I have been on big cruise ships and have enjoyed them very much. This one is bigger than my taste. I imagine the launch will give the climate neurotics plenty of nightmares. One thing about too many Americans, as some of the comments here make clear, is that the obsessive focus on germs is a mental disorder.

Icon of the Seas represents the cruising industry's effort to attract a younger clientele, which today means anyone under the age of 75.

One has to wonder how that monster will behave in heavy weather. She's got to have a high center of gravity. Then again, the giant car carriers seem to be OK. The idea is to avoid the weather. Just a thought. I wouldn't set foot on it. It's not carrying cars, but thousands of people.

I'm wondering what happens if you hit a storm? I'm guessing this monstrosity would capsized given how top heavy it is. I'll pass on this one.

LOL #12, we just went through a multi-year global mental breakdown with most people succumbing to Contamination OCD over fear of the woofloo, and you mock people as having a mental disorder because they think being squeezed into a floating McDonald's PlayPlace with other people's fat little booger-eating munchkins who are too short to be covered by the sneeze guard at the public feeding trough is icky?

I'll wait until she has at least a dozen voyages under her belt before I buy a ticket. Passengers who see more than one indoor waterfall either spent too much time at the bar or it's time to lower the lifeboats.

The article states the ship was designed to appeal to the younger crowd. Thankfully, I'm a member of the older crowd. Speaking of crowds....I prefer vacations where I can get away from them.

I can't believe nobody has posted this observation by cruise ship employees. "You've got your newlyweds, overfeds, and nearly deads."
