Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) formally announced on Monday that he will seek the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination, jumping into a primary battle that has so far centered around former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis. Scott announced his decision at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, in a speech drawing on his biography of growing up poor in North Charleston, S.C., and eventually ascending to the Senate. “We live in the land where it is possible for a kid raised in poverty by a single mother in a small apartment to one day serve in the People’s House and maybe even the White House,” Scott said, according to prepared remarks

From the article: "“Good luck to Senator Tim Scott in entering the Republican Presidential Primary Race,” Trump said on his social media site, Truth Social. “It is rapidly loading up with lots of people, and Tim is a big step up from Ron DeSanctimonious, who is totally unelectable.” It is truly sad that Donald Trump cannot leave well enough alone. I can't emphasize enough that he needs to let go of the sarcasm on Ron DeSantis. It makes him look very immature. With that said, I applaud Tim Scott getting into the race as well as person who wants to run for President.

I don’t understand why people run for President who must know they have a 0% chance of winning. There must be money or something else in it.

I hope President Trump is not so into Tim Scott that he would entertain the possibility of inviting him on his ticket. He might as well ask Mike Pence to jump onboard again. By some accounts, Tim Scott has been loose-lipped with public, dismissive put-downs of Trump, and is actually better understood as a Never Trumper. I.e, he is in no way an ally of Trump. During the primaries I expect Scott’s mission will be to ankle-bite Trump on race, just as Nikki Haley’s mission will be to ankle-bite Trump on sensitivities to women. The game plan seem transparent to me.

South Carolina lawmakers pass 6-week abortion ban 2 replies
Posted by Dreadnought 5/23/2023 8:37:31 PM Post Reply
The South Carolina Senate approved a bill Tuesday that would ban most abortions after around six weeks of pregnancy — before most people know they are pregnant — and sent it to the governor who has promised to sign it. The proposal restores a ban South Carolina had in place when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year — a ban that, once it took effect, was overturned by the state's highest court because it violated the state Constitution's right to privacy. Republicans have been searching for an answer to that ruling because it left abortion legal through 22 weeks of pregnancy and sharply increased

He says that in the absence of robust independent research it is impossible to know whether social media is safe for children and adolescents. Tell us: how do you feel about your smartphone use? Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will announce he is running for president during a discussion with Twitter CEO Elon Musk, three sources familiar with the plans told NBC News. Musk and DeSantis will host an event on Twitter Spaces, the site’s platform for audio chats, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET. It will be moderated by David Sacks, a tech entrepreneur who is a Musk confidant and DeSantis supporter. That same evening, the campaign will release a launch video, and DeSantis will begin visiting several early states after Memorial Day. The relationship could be a significant boost for DeSantis by giving him an introduction to, and credibility with, Musk’s massive following

A third wave of expected layoffs is underway at Disney, and employees impacted by the cuts are being notified this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN. More than 2,500 staff are expected to lose their jobs across the latest wave of layoffs, the source said, in what is anticipated to be the last significant round of cuts that were previously announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger. It was not immediately known which divisions would be impacted by the latest round of cuts. A Disney (DIS) spokesperson declined to comment. The first two waves of layoffs took place in March and April, eliminating roughly 4,000 jobs, including at ESPN,

Oracle co-founder and Republican megadonor Larry Ellison is preparing to spend millions of dollars backing Sen. Tim Scott’s run for president. The plans have been in motion since the 2022 midterms, when Ellison donated $30 million to a pro-Scott super PAC, Opportunity Matters Fund, according to people familiar with the Oracle executive chairman’s plans. People who declined to be named for this story did so in order to speak freely about private planning and deliberations. Scott announced his campaign Monday. A Republican strategist and fundraiser close to Ellison told CNBC that the businessman’s donations to the super PAC this time are likely to at least double

I’m having a hard time figuring out what’s come over Disney. I realize it’s been decades in the making, but they always hid their latent Machiavellian tendencies behind a veneer of creepy family friendliness as guardians of the wholesome and right. For example, ever make the mistake of wearing something that could be misconstrued as drug-culture related to a park in the 80s? In my own personal experience, it was DisneyLAND, circa late 1987. Recently returned from a WestPac deployment, I was escorting an elderly friend from Scotland and taking her for a day at the Magic Kingdom. I was also wearing a t-shirt earned at

Nebraska governor Jim Pillen signed a bill banning abortion at the 12-week mark and setting limits on gender-transition treatments for minors. The unicameral legislature passed the bill on Friday, sending it to Pillen’s desk. The governor has previously explained that the measure is an effort to protect children before they are born and after. “These kids deserve the opportunity to grow and explore who they are and want to be, and they can do so without making irreversible decisions that should be made when they are fully grown,” explained Pillen in a statement. On Monday, Pillen called the effort “the most significant win for social conservatives in our state in a generation.”

TikTok has filed a federal lawsuit against Montana in response to a recently passed state law that would ban the popular video service in the state. The lawsuit, filed Monday in the United States District Court for the District of Montana, is intended to "prevent the state of Montana from unlawfully banning TikTok," lawyers for the app's parent company, ByteDance wrote. "Montana's ban abridges freedom of speech in violation of the First Amendment, violates the U.S. Constitution in multiple other respects and is preempted by federal law," the attorneys said. Last week, Montana became the first U.S. state to ban TikTok over allegations the Chinese government can use
