Russian forces have captured the strategic eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Ukraine’s top commander in the region said, marking President Vladimir Putin’s first significant battlefield victory since last summer’s renewed offensive. The news was hailed across Russia as a major success reminiscent of the Soviet Union’s battlefield victories during World War II. One Russian fighter recalled that the battle for Bakhmut conjured up “probably the same emotions as our grandpas did in Berlin,” the New York Times reports. A news anchor for the state-owned media outlet, Channel 1, broadcasting from Moscow, declared: “Mission accomplished.”

A federal judge in Oregon ruled on Friday that a new state gun law does not violate the US Constitution, keeping one of the toughest gun laws in the country in place.
US District Court Judge Karin Immergut ruled that Ballot Measure 114’s restrictions on large-capacity magazines that hold more than 10 rounds are constitutional because these magazines are “not commonly used for self-defense, and are therefore not protected by the Second Amendment.”
“Even if LCMs are protected by the Second Amendment, BM 114’s restrictions are consistent with this Nation’s history and tradition of regulating uniquely dangerous features of weapons and firearms to protect public safety,” the ruling said.

In a report by the New York Post titled “RFK Jr. says COVID was ‘ethnically targeted’ to spare Jews,” video appears to show Kennedy speaking at a dinner in Manhattan. In a discussion on bioweapons and “ethnically targeted microbes,” Kennedy claimed that “Covid-19 attacks certain races disproportionately.”

This example is from The Daily Mail, which puts a bit more meat on the bone regarding the already controversial live-action remake of “Snow White and the 7 Dwarves.”
The earlier controversy stems from Disney’s self-conscious hire of a Latina actress to play Snow White–an example of the fact that race-swapping is perfectly acceptable when doing so displaces a White actor, but “cultural appropriation” when a White actor plays a non-White character.

That’s a controversy which would, at any other time in the history of the English language, be incomprehensible to a sensible reader. After all, there’s no practical difference in the phrases. FBI Whistleblower Kyle Seraphin isn’t impressed by Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee’s recent attacks on his credibility during a recent hearing in DC.
In a Saturday phone call, Seraphin is looking to correct the record after Rep. Jackson Lee “inarticulately stated” that he is looking to compensate fellow whistleblowers from the widely criticized Federal Bureau of Investigation as part of a “quid pro quo” arrangement.
“She’s not intelligent,” Seraphin states bluntly.
Jackson’s attacks on Seraphin and the other FBI whistleblowers came during a Wednesday hearing before the House Judiciary Committee.
