While I was flying a plane somewhere over the mid-west this evening, Ron DeSantis finally made his much-anticipated presidential campaign announcement. Unfortunately, we’ve got no in-flight internet on our birds, so I’m disconnected when I’m up there and missed out on all the initial fireworks.
But from what I can gather, DeSantis demanded so much attention that he broke Twitter for about 20 minutes before he and Elon Musk were able to continue their Twitter Spaces conversation. I’m being assured that means the Florida man’s launch was a total disaster, effectively ending his campaign before it starts. Joe Biden even had his handlers fire off a silly tweet about

The Walt Disney Company’s ongoing feud with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has caused the Mouse House to plummet in a key gauge that measures the reputation of the most visible brands in America. The Bob Iger-led media giant plunged 12 spots to rank 77th in this year’s Axios and Harris Poll 100, which is based on a survey of 16,310 Americans from a nationally representative sample conducted March 13–28. The survey ranked Disney as the fifth most polarizing company — a metric that is measured by the gap between the reputational score among Democrats and Republicans.
The company has been engaged in a bare-knuckle battle

Both Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and General Milley, Chair of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, insist that the Department of Defense neither funds nor supports drag queen story hours on military bases.
That was and remains a lie. When presented with the evidence in a Congressional hearing Austin repeated the lie, even when confronted by incontrovertible evidence that he was spreading falsehoods.
He lied. Then he lied again. And again.
I have no idea if he was under oath, but it shouldn’t matter. Lying to Congress and the American people is unacceptable, except when a Democrat is in the White House. Then it is apparently mandatory.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) raised $1 million in the first hour after he launched his presidential campaign Wednesday, his press secretary said.
“There was so much enthusiasm for Governor DeSantis’ vision for our Great American Comeback that he literally busted up the internet. Washington is next. $1 million raised online in one hour… and counting!” press secretary Bryan Griffin tweeted Wednesday afternoon.
The announcement comes after DeSantis entered the race for the Republican nomination for president after months of speculation. DeSantis filed his paperwork with the Federal Election Commission earlier Wednesday before posting an official campaign launch video on his Twitter account.

During his first television interview after announcing his entry into the 2024 presidential race on Wednesday, Florida governor Ron DeSantis vowed to fire FBI director Christopher Wray on day one of his presidency should he be elected.
Appearing on Fox News shortly after launching his campaign on Twitter, DeSantis was asked by Trey Gowdy how he would go about reforming the FBI given the numerous abuses exposed by House Republicans.
“No I would not keep Chris Wray as director of the FBI. There’d be a new one on Day One. I think that’s very important,” DeSantis responded when asked if FBI director Wray would keep his job in a DeSantis administration.

Turns out Twitter Spaces isn’t the best place to make a major announcement.
Ron DeSantis learned this the hard way on Wednesday evening, when the Florida governor was scheduled to kick off his presidential campaign during a live audio conversation with Elon Musk on Twitter Spaces.
More than 20 minutes after the conversation was scheduled to begin, DeSantis wasn’t even able to speak as the live audio room repeatedly crashed and featured echoing audio, which Musk said was due to Twitter’s servers being overloaded by the number of listeners on the room. The Space appeared to be cut short after 21 minutes, and a recorded version of the conversation-that-wasn't

The South Carolina Senate approved a bill Tuesday that would ban most abortions after around six weeks of pregnancy — before most people know they are pregnant — and sent it to the governor who has promised to sign it.
The proposal restores a ban South Carolina had in place when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year — a ban that, once it took effect, was overturned by the state's highest court because it violated the state Constitution's right to privacy. Republicans have been searching for an answer to that ruling because it left abortion legal through 22 weeks of pregnancy and sharply increased

Social media use by children and teenagers can pose a “profound risk of harm” to their mental health and wellbeing, the US surgeon general is warning.
In a new advisory released on Tuesday, Dr Vivek Murthy calls on tech companies, policymakers and parents to take “immediate action to protect kids now”. He says that in the absence of robust independent research it is impossible to know whether social media is safe for children and adolescents. Tell us: how do you feel about your smartphone use?

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis will announce he is running for president during a discussion with Twitter CEO Elon Musk, three sources familiar with the plans told NBC News.
Musk and DeSantis will host an event on Twitter Spaces, the site’s platform for audio chats, on Wednesday at 6 p.m. ET. It will be moderated by David Sacks, a tech entrepreneur who is a Musk confidant and DeSantis supporter. That same evening, the campaign will release a launch video, and DeSantis will begin visiting several early states after Memorial Day. The relationship could be a significant boost for DeSantis by giving him an introduction to, and credibility with, Musk’s massive following

A third wave of expected layoffs is underway at Disney, and employees impacted by the cuts are being notified this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.
More than 2,500 staff are expected to lose their jobs across the latest wave of layoffs, the source said, in what is anticipated to be the last significant round of cuts that were previously announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger. It was not immediately known which divisions would be impacted by the latest round of cuts.
A Disney (DIS) spokesperson declined to comment. The first two waves of layoffs took place in March and April, eliminating roughly 4,000 jobs, including at ESPN,

co-founder and Republican megadonor Larry Ellison is preparing to spend millions of dollars backing Sen. Tim Scott’s run for president.
The plans have been in motion since the 2022 midterms, when Ellison donated $30 million to a pro-Scott super PAC, Opportunity Matters Fund, according to people familiar with the Oracle executive chairman’s plans. People who declined to be named for this story did so in order to speak freely about private planning and deliberations. Scott announced his campaign Monday.
A Republican strategist and fundraiser close to Ellison told CNBC that the businessman’s donations to the super PAC this time are likely to at least double

I’m having a hard time figuring out what’s come over Disney. I realize it’s been decades in the making, but they always hid their latent Machiavellian tendencies behind a veneer of creepy family friendliness as guardians of the wholesome and right. For example, ever make the mistake of wearing something that could be misconstrued as drug-culture related to a park in the 80s?
In my own personal experience, it was DisneyLAND, circa late 1987. Recently returned from a WestPac deployment, I was escorting an elderly friend from Scotland and taking her for a day at the Magic Kingdom. I was also wearing a t-shirt earned at
