A third wave of expected layoffs is underway at Disney, and employees impacted by the cuts are being notified this week, a source familiar with the situation told CNN.
More than 2,500 staff are expected to lose their jobs across the latest wave of layoffs, the source said, in what is anticipated to be the last significant round of cuts that were previously announced by Disney CEO Bob Iger. It was not immediately known which divisions would be impacted by the latest round of cuts.
A Disney (DIS) spokesperson declined to comment. The first two waves of layoffs took place in March and April, eliminating roughly 4,000 jobs, including at ESPN,

Oracle
co-founder and Republican megadonor Larry Ellison is preparing to spend millions of dollars backing Sen. Tim Scott’s run for president.
The plans have been in motion since the 2022 midterms, when Ellison donated $30 million to a pro-Scott super PAC, Opportunity Matters Fund, according to people familiar with the Oracle executive chairman’s plans. People who declined to be named for this story did so in order to speak freely about private planning and deliberations. Scott announced his campaign Monday.
A Republican strategist and fundraiser close to Ellison told CNBC that the businessman’s donations to the super PAC this time are likely to at least double

I’m having a hard time figuring out what’s come over Disney. I realize it’s been decades in the making, but they always hid their latent Machiavellian tendencies behind a veneer of creepy family friendliness as guardians of the wholesome and right. For example, ever make the mistake of wearing something that could be misconstrued as drug-culture related to a park in the 80s?
In my own personal experience, it was DisneyLAND, circa late 1987. Recently returned from a WestPac deployment, I was escorting an elderly friend from Scotland and taking her for a day at the Magic Kingdom. I was also wearing a t-shirt earned at

Nebraska governor Jim Pillen signed a bill banning abortion at the 12-week mark and setting limits on gender-transition treatments for minors.
The unicameral legislature passed the bill on Friday, sending it to Pillen’s desk. The governor has previously explained that the measure is an effort to protect children before they are born and after.
“These kids deserve the opportunity to grow and explore who they are and want to be, and they can do so without making irreversible decisions that should be made when they are fully grown,” explained Pillen in a statement.
On Monday, Pillen called the effort “the most significant win for social conservatives in our state in a generation.”

TikTok has filed a federal lawsuit against Montana in response to a recently passed state law that would ban the popular video service in the state.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in the United States District Court for the District of Montana, is intended to "prevent the state of Montana from unlawfully banning TikTok," lawyers for the app's parent company, ByteDance wrote. "Montana's ban abridges freedom of speech in violation of the First Amendment, violates the U.S. Constitution in multiple other respects and is preempted by federal law," the attorneys said.
Last week, Montana became the first U.S. state to ban TikTok over allegations the Chinese government can use

QUEENS, N.Y. - Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams want the Biden administration to expedite the process for legal asylum seekers to get their working papers. They say it’s an economic opportunity in a time of a historic labor shortage.
The founder of the Union Square Hospitality Group, Danny Meyer, says he is on board and is committed to helping asylum seekers get their working rights.
He says the hospitality industry is desperate for workers and simply hasn’t been able to fill restaurant vacancies, especially since the pandemic.
In a press conference Monday he said, "We don’t have enough workers. The hospitality industry is the largest single employer

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) formally announced on Monday that he will seek the GOP’s 2024 presidential nomination, jumping into a primary battle that has so far centered around former President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
Scott announced his decision at his alma mater, Charleston Southern University, in a speech drawing on his biography of growing up poor in North Charleston, S.C., and eventually ascending to the Senate. “We live in the land where it is possible for a kid raised in poverty by a single mother in a small apartment to one day serve in the People’s House and maybe even the White House,” Scott said, according to prepared remarks

Russian forces have captured the strategic eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, Ukraine’s top commander in the region said, marking President Vladimir Putin’s first significant battlefield victory since last summer’s renewed offensive.
The news was hailed across Russia as a major success reminiscent of the Soviet Union’s battlefield victories during World War II. One Russian fighter recalled that the battle for Bakhmut conjured up “probably the same emotions as our grandpas did in Berlin,” the New York Times reports.
A news anchor for the state-owned media outlet, Channel 1, broadcasting from Moscow, declared: “Mission accomplished.”

Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said on Sunday that a call he had with President Biden about the debt limit and looming default earlier in the day was “productive” and that the pair will meet in-person on Monday upon the president’s return from Japan.
“I believe it was a productive phone call,” McCarthy told reporters, noting that Biden had spoken to him from Air Force One. The White House had arranged the call in an effort to reignite talks as Biden heads back to Washington from the Group of Seven (G7) summit. He cut his international trip short early to return to the U.S. for the talks.

Convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein reportedly tried to use Bill Gates' affair with a Russian bridge player to threaten the Microsoft co-founder. "Mr. Gates met with Epstein solely for philanthropic purposes. Having failed repeatedly to draw Mr. Gates beyond these matters, Epstein tried unsuccessfully to leverage a past relationship to threaten Mr. Gates," a spokeswoman for Gates told The Wall Street Journal in an article Sunday.
The "past relationship" was an affair Gates had with Russian bridge player Mila Antonova, whom he met around 2010 when she was in her 20s, according to people familiar with the matter cited by the Journal.

As the nation barrels toward defaulting on our debt, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Saturday that negotiations are on pause until President Joe Biden returns Sunday from the Group of Seven summit in Japan. Both sides are accusing the other of being intractable in negotiations over raising the debt ceiling, which Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen says we could hit as soon as June 1, causing “economic chaos.”
Said McCarthy about the latest developments (or lack thereof):
Unfortunately, the White House moved backwards.
I don’t think we’re going to be able to move forward until the president can get back in the country.

Are Republicans actually about to win a political messaging battle? It’d certainly be shocking given the party’s track record, but that’s the story of a new Associated Press poll that is just brutal for the Democrat narrative on the debt ceiling fight.
According to the results of the AP-NORC poll, a whopping 63 percent of Americans want a debt ceiling deal that includes measures to decrease the federal deficit. That compares to just 19 percent who want a debt ceiling increase to be passed without any conditions.
Twenty-one percent of adults are following the debate over increasing the national debt limit closely and another 38% are following it somewhat closely.
