Target (TGT) has become a target for major thefts, and it's taking a huge chunk out of profits. The retailer estimated in its earnings release Wednesday that inventory shrinkage — mostly the theft of merchandise — would clip profits by a whopping $500 million this year. Factoring in an about $700 million profit hit from inventory shrinkage in 2022, Target is on pace to see $1.2 billion in profits go up in smoke, due primarily to organized retail crime. Target Chairman and CEO Brian Cornell says the problem is getting worse, is nationwide, and across various merchandise departments. "The unfortunate

OP nails it. Why didn't the CEO outline steps the company will be taking to put a stop to the "shrinkage"? Will Target be hiring guards who are authorized to stop the thieves? Will clothes be wired to the display racks? Will open shelves be replaced by locked cases? And will Target be hiring more employees to unlock the merchandise for the honest shoppers?

I wonder what the cost would be to have two armed guards in every Target store during business hours. Would the cost of their salaries be less than the loss from stolen goods? I'm sure some bean counter has calculated this but I have never seen any reference to the comparison. If a few of the Amish were shot during their thievery the word would quickly get around to the rest of the congregation. LOL.

But Target is WOKE. They should be celebrating the animals coming in and helping themselves to what is not theirs. So this is a problem?

Home Depot has been having a similar problem, and with millions of illegal new foot soldiers available to the organized retail crime industry it's only going to get worse.

Target kicked out the Salvation Army Christmas bellringers years ago, and they got this instead. "Karma" in Christian-speak is "the mills of God grind slowley but they grind exceedingly fine."

They fly into Houston from S. America, spend a couple of weeks accumulating inventory, then ship it back to S. America, boarding a plane and returning home. It's profitable for them.

But the DEI people placed on your boards by institutional investors--- bulk shareholders with an agenda not of profit making but of changing the social order run your operation, Not for profitability or a return of shareholder investment. Find a way to deal with that, or stand up to it.

Don't think Target knows what to do about this. Target's policies did not cause this. This was all caused by local, state, and federal policies. It would be a terrible blow if Target shutdown nationwide. The destroyers would love that.

Target has aimed their advertising to the same people who are targeting their stores.
It’s in part their own fault.
Target is also a left leaning company that has donated millions to woke causes.

Put up security cameras, hire guards and prosecute shoplifters.
Hope that helps.

GREAT news! Let the rip-off continue. Hopefully they will go under before too long, just like BedBath did. Target is pushing hard the transgender and LGBQ^%$WXYZ agenda to CHILDREN in their stores. They are irreparably unrepentant. I have been boycotting them now for about 4 years ---- ever since the men-in-women's bathrooms agenda kicked in and since then a lot of lawsuits have been filed, and women/girls have been molested by perps in Target bathrooms. Who could've known? They are so devious about it, that I've spoken with their employees at cash registers who don't even know about the bathroom policy and were shocked when they heard it.... form me.
Make Target Bud Light. Push it out.

No need to worry. The solution will be government stores with shelves permanently empty. Problem solved. It takes a government to commit thievery on an industrial scale.

While I do believe that rampant crime is killing all stores in the soft-on-crime Demon-Rat run cities, in Target's case, their losses are probably at least 40% due to the woke policies.
It started with their allowing perverted men into the ladies' bathrooms as official store policy, and has really accelerated to the current sodomite and trans perversion grooming for children.
I used to shop at Target several times a week before this insanity started. But I doubt I have been in a Target 3 times in the last 5 or 6 years. And that was only to get something that I had to have at that moment that I couldn't find anywhere else. And I promise I went in, got that one single thing, and left. And I seriously doubt that I am the only middle-class mom who has felt this way!!!!!

Years ago, Target decided not to separate males and females using their restrooms and dressing rooms.
Having been born and raised in the US, and having grown up female, I found the prospect of shopping in a store where men were welcome in the ladies' room unappealing, disrespectful, and inappropriate. I interpreted that policy as being indifferent to customer safety and comfort, at least for women. Now I'm wondering why Target tolerates organized theft inside its stores. I feel sorry for its workers and the law abiding customers stuck in such an unsafe environment. If Target wants to be a trailblazer, maybe it should try to figure out how to keep thieves from taking advantage of their stores, customers and the people who work there. More security would be a good start.

@#1 - Target nor any other businesses shouldn't have to take all the steps you listed. Those alone would raise prices and decrease sales. State lawmakers and voters alike are encouraging theft by passing laws to not prosecute amounts of goods under a certain dollar value. Which states who currently have these laws in place are lining up to abolish those laws and hold District Attys accountable for not prosecuting. My guess is those states are probably cutting back by defunding police services and looking the other way at increased property crimes.
@#2 - What good would armed guards do? Unless they can legally shoot to kill looters, then they'll stand by and watch the theft and quite possibly have their weapon taken by force.

Replace the target sign with the following:
Shoplifters will be shot.
Survivors will be prosecuted.
