The U.S. was able to collect valuable information on China’s surveillance capabilities while observing the spy balloon as it traversed the continental U.S. for several days, a senior military official and senior defense official claimed Saturday.
President Joe Biden asked for possible military options for removing the threat of the suspected Chinese spy balloon Tuesday, but the Department of Defense (DOD) opted against doing so Wednesday over concerns falling debris could endanger civilians, officials said at a briefing Saturday. However, they did not clarify whether a military option was considered when the craft transgressed U.S. airspace over Alaska’s Aleutian Islands on Jan. 28,

I am guessing that the destruction was not the balloon but the electronics package it carried. No ability to look at what what it monitored or what it sent back to China.

If it is shot down before it can begin its mission it doesn't matter what its capabilities are. It is called national defense.
Am I the only one having my intelligence insulted by the government and media?
I keep hearing reports such as "the Chinese got caught spying". Yeah they send a balloon which is as big as a house and it is supposed to be a secret? I heard a reporter anticipating a "fireball" when it is shot down. it is filled with nonflammable HELIUM , sweetie. And what an magnificent shot by the pilot. That misslie probably cost $100k. At that cost it better hit a target that large at close range regardless of who launched it.

One shot!
It had dang well better be one shot. Especially to hit a pilotless balloon - the size of 3 shoolbuses, (so us rubes can relate).
But for the admin to use for bragging is pitiful. They never disappoint in that regard.
Delayed for prime Saturday afternoon TV (millions agog at watching a. spectacle) w bidet wearing his aviators. What a guy.

I do not believe anything that this administration says. Why should I? Mayorkas says the border is secure, The most recent job numbers were “adjusted” to make Joe look better, the lies are too numerous to list.

They had to use an F-22 and a million dollar missile to bring down a balloon?

Hey, shut up. All of you.
Just think of all the valuable intelligence we collected on "Chicom surveillance capabilities."
Blinken, Austin, Milley, Rice, et al., are on the case. We're lucky to have them.
God help us.

Funny thing is, I remember reading an article earlier this week that said Biden had stated he didn't want to shoot it down because he didn't want to endanger anybody.

I heard a recording of Biden saying he told them to shoot it down as soon as it came into U.S. airspace, sounding frustrated they didn't. It appears the president is out of the loop on deciding things like that.

Many of us LDotters served in the military over quite a few different eras. I cant remember a single post where a vet said the pentagon told the truth. I've certainly never seen it myself. Always safer to believe you are being lied to. At least then you wont be disappointed.

Lying Joe ordered the balloon to be shot down Wednesday and the military refused until today. Disobeying orders? When do the court-martials begin? And again, WHO is running our country?

We all know that they had to wait until Biden's latest Chi-Com check cleared the bank before they'd shoot it down.

We are being soooo played. We’re supposed to believe that everybody including the Canadians knew about this balloon for days but we didn’t have to take action or demand a public explanation from China because it wasn’t dangerous? How did we know that? And why did it have to be shot down over the water where it apparently can’t be retrieved? How convenient. Poof! Gone.
Not only the alphabets and cable report fake news. What an insult to our intelligence.

No way! Thoroughly Modern Milley was conversing with his Chicom counterpart the whole time, telling them exactly what Lame Duck was going to do. Xi got his information. Balloon no longer needed. Thank you Lame Duck.

this is the Pentagon that thought it was a good idea to shut down the airport in Bagdad before evacuating....need we go any further? i don't know who is covering for whom but if Biden said to shoot it down right away he should be firing Austin/Milley - or someone. we shall see.

Do you actually think there are spokesmen from the Pentagon that actually tell the truth, or just what the Administration wants them to convey?
The Pentagon has been lying to America since Roswell, in the 1940s. The first day General Ramey tells the truth and the next after the evidence has been swapped out, says it was a weather balloon; as if General Ramey couldn't tell at first the evidence was a weather balloon? Nor would a weather balloon have created such a destruction of the topsoil in the landing area! They lied about Vietnam, Iraq, Weapons of Mass destruction, and the pull-out of Afghanistan and so many others not mentioned here.
The real reason: Xi Jinping finally gave his "Butt-Boy" Biden the ok to destroy the evidence once the mission was complete and he promptly complied.

That “falling debris” story is a crock of cah-cah. There are huge swaths of unpopulated areas where this thing could have been brought down BEFORE it had a chance to gather information about military installations and communications. Another Biden lie. We are inundated with them.
