The family of accused Idaho murderer Bryan Kohberger is standing by their son in an effort to “promote his presumption of innocence,” they said Sunday in their first public statement.
Kohberger, 28, was arrested Friday in his family home in Pennsylvania for the fatal Nov. 13 stabbings of four University of Idaho students.
His public defender Jason A. LaBar released the statement on behalf of his parents and his sister.
“We have fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies in an attempt to seek the truth and promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions,” the family said.

If they have DNA that's conclusive (unless you are OJ). The missing murder weapon is not a problem. Knives can easily be discarded. But, what is the motive. Why would someone kill 4 strangers? Thirty years ago 5 students at the University of Florida were murdered by a bum who was a complete loser. But the suspect in these murders is a college student with apparently no criminal record. Doesn't make any sense.

This person was a PHD student in criminology. He was contacting ex-cons on REDDIT and other sites to document their thoughts and feelings after committing crimes. Might this have been for his thesis? Could it possibly be that he wanted to test his hypothesis for his study and documentation? Might it be that he just decided to conjure up the after- thoughts and feelings for himself? Or might he could be just plain nuts!

I would expect him to be released soon on a liberal no cash bail program.

Seems to me it would have been better for the family to keep their mouths shut and disappear, but I have never been in their trouble.

What would you expect, Ben?

It's what the family has to say, but if they knew he was innocent (or at least had a chance of getting off) they would have hired a good lawyer instead of relying on a public defender.

I’m kindova fan of that ‘presumption of innocence’ thingey. At least until the keyboard jockeys on various social media give me their take, then I’ll know he’s guilty.

Re #6, the lawyer in Pennsylvania is to handle only the extradition hearing. Nothing more. A trial would be in Idaho once he is extradited and returned to Idaho. He will need a criminal defense attorney in Idaho.

Well, that’s normal. I do feel sorry for them. This guy may not have given any indication that their son was capable of doing something like this. Their lives have pretty much been ruined. I do think that there is such a thing as a “bad seed”. Some sort of psycho gene that shows up later in life. I realize that he is the “alleged” perpetrator but I think the cops have some dead solid evidence.

School friends said two things: He was addicted to heroin in high school, where he’d been socially awkward but had some friends. Secondly, his personality changed at some point and he became aggressive and bullying toward those who had been his friends. At some point he also got clean of his addiction according to one friend. Read up on schizophrenia in young men - late teens through early 20s. Read too about the drug use in teens connection to later schizophrenia. Even marijuana use as a teen can bring it on.

Not surprising in the US today that the people who produced this monster wont admit he's a murdering psychopath

Yes, there is a presumption of innocence in a courtroom trial, but if the guilt is obvious to one sitting on the outside, I'm not going to assume innocence. I'm not on the jury, and I'm sure he committed these murders. In Idaho he could (and should) face a firing squad.

Exactly what I've said. The media and police have convicted this guy before any evidence has been presented in court. That the authorities have evidence that indicate he was involved in the murders in order to arrest him is not the point. The police and media have decided to convict this guy before a trial has even started and before a jury has been selected, thus poisoning the potential jury pool. The police have decided to start repairing their reputation for incompetence, which was all over the news for weeks at the outset of the murders, and the media just wants to be the first to get the juicy details before anyone else. This guy may very well have committed the murders, but let the evidence convict him in a court of law, not just in the court of public opinion.

If one of our famous detective mystery writers such as Lawrence Sanders or Agatha Christie had written the script now being played out by this Kohberger character we would consider it dull, boring and horribly chiche. Brilliant Ph D student, bullied, unpopular, spurned by women, had daddy drive him home like a scared kid because he was terrified of being caught, stayed in Pennsylvania when he should have returned to school. You get the picture, much too obvious. They had three thousand miles of Interstate to roll down the window and throw away the knife. Even OJ was bright enough to do that. We have not met the family yet but I predict they are real doozies.
