We Need To Stop Calling Ourselves Conservatives

Original Article

Posted By: Harlowe, 10/20/2022 12:30:43 PM

Given the state of America in 2022, conservatives should stop calling themselves conservatives. Why? Because the conservative project has largely failed, and it is time for a new approach. Conservatives have long defined their politics in terms of what they wish to conserve or preserve--individual rights, family values, religious freedom, and so on.(Snip)To talk of defending “religious freedom” is to misapprehend that the real risk today is widespread irreligion, which will leave so few religious Americans in the coming generations that the government and large corporations will inevitably--and easily--persecute them.

Comments:

The author expresses reality in bold terms stressing the seriousness of what Conservatives need to be made aware of and two remedial actions necessary to protect civilization as we know it or watch our civilization die—that there is no third road.

No. I am not changing my name, or my values. That is what the left does, their name signs all pasted on with velcro, a special dictionary necessary just for leftistism.

The liberals / leftists / progressives / whatever they use this week can change their name as often as they like. Everyone still knows who they are. It makes no difference. Calling ourselves something else? For what? No thanks. We haven't lost anything. Changing our identifier is just silly.

The article is not talking about changing values, but that we need to change tactics to defend them. Sitting around in an echo chamber and patting ourselves on the back for being more upright than other citizens is not conservativism. The "never explain, never complain" stance that we've had in the past is not going to work for us anymore...or rather, we need to stop thinking that it is the higher road at least. Id say that particular tactic is what gave the Left the ability to grab huge chunks of American culture (1960s anyone??) and run with it.

Conservatism has not failed us. The great Rush said conservatism is successful wherever it's tried. What has failed US is trusting the people pretending to be conservatives and allowing them to lead us down a path of weak resistance. I don't call myself a Republican, so I'm good there. I do like this from the article: "For starters, they should stop thinking of themselves as conservatives (much less as Republicans) and start thinking of themselves as radicals, restorationists, and counterrevolutionaries. Indeed, that is what they are, whether they embrace those labels or not." And, I agree with the examples that we should follow, Pilgrims and the founders. I would add the Reformers. The Reformers went back to reclaim something that was lost, salvation by faith alone through Christ alone. Those men changed the world not just a country. I will never let go of small government either; big government is intrusive and oppressive no matter who controls it."The left will only stop when conservatives stop them." One hundred percent!

Whatever political philosophy the Conservatives chose to adopt going forward, it needs to be clear in its core values. The bedrock of Conservatism is that man was created in accord natural laws from which we derive our concept of rights. These laws are superior to the laws created by men and all just governments must recognize the equality of all humans based on these fundamental rights. This places the burden of attaining happiness on the individual and not the community. It also protects private property which cannot be appropriated by the state to achieve redistributive justice and economic equality. It requires that all citizens participate in the political decisions that determine how we restrict our rights to ensure domestic tranquility and defend our sovereignty against foreign enemies. We should be tolerant of alternative moral codes that decide how individuals live their lives and resist the instinct to enforce our religious beliefs on a pluralistic society. This is best done by living by one's code and influencing the attitudes of others through example rather than using the force of government. The political philosophy that evolved over time to reflect this set of values was originally called liberal republicanism to contrast it with the traditionalist conservatism of Edmund Burke. With some modern adjustments like Social Security, worker profit sharing, and health and safety monitoring by government, this is still a good political antidote to the post-modernist, identity laden, Herbert Marcusian chaos that the left has adopted in the present period.

The movement didn’t fail per se, but Republicans wasted opportunities that conservatives placed before them. Too much acquiescing or outright monkey wrenching by the Lotts, McCains, Specters, etc. Conservatism is a hard sell to begin with, just like convincing children not to eat their desert first in the cafeteria (when parents aren’t watching). It doesn’t help when the benefactors in charge are embarrassed by the notion, in addition to not being willing to practice the respective restraint once in power. If a red wave actually happens next month, I fear seeing a repeat of previous times. Each subsequent time it will be more difficult to have an affect.

Big government is intrusive and heavy-handed and the bigger and more powerful it gets, the more the individual is subjugated by it and subordinate to it. Furthermore, a big and powerful central government is a death knell for federalism and states rights. So no, I will not change my mind about that. (In my opinion, one of Trump's negatives is that he's a big government guy. But at least he wants it to be run efficiently and cost-effectively with minimum intrusion into citizens' lives and the marketplace--it's just that he has yet not accepted you can't have it both ways. And btw, Mr. Davidson, his tax cuts extended across the board.) That does not mean we cannot and should not use the power of government effectively. Antitrust laws *should* be applied to Big Tech. Legislatures *should* deny funding to state schools that have gone off the rails. Davidson makes some good points and imparts some good advice, but I reject his basic premise.

Absolutely not. We need to fight for what is right and quit backing up to the wall. We don't need to change parties -- we need to purge the Republicans of embedded agents for other parties. We don't need to drop "conservatism" -- we need to talk about what it really means, not what the Left slanders it with. And we don't need to split our Country to be allowed to live under a smaller country with more sympathetic values. Without the protection of the Constitution, the Dems would start a trumped-up war the day after we split and kill us with weapons we bought and paid for. Quit running. Start fighting for your Constitution and your Country. You're going to have to eventually. Better to do it now with words, votes and ruined Thanksgivings than in the streets later.

The author, Davidson, mentions Trump as a populist. Populism is not an ideology but a political strategy for the individual running for office, not a unifying political movement. Conservatism, as explained and championed by Ronald Reagan is a pro-American ideology. I guess Davidson missed the class on conservatism 58 years ago in Reagan's A Time for Choosing speech. Reagan operationalized his conservative views while in office by increasing military spending, cutting taxes, reducing non-military federal spending, and restricting federal regulations. Davidson sounds like he has already surrendered to the left and is looking for new window dressing. The most detestable thing I find in this article is the author's assumption that "conservatives will have to discard outdated and irrelevant notions about “small government.” The government will have to become, in the hands of conservatives, an instrument of renewal in American life — and in some cases, a blunt instrument indeed." So he believes big government is both timely and necessary but what that essentially means is that conservative people are like infants that must be succored by big government. I'll take Reagan's view to my grave, as I have more faith in what the people can accomplish without big government dictating most aspects of life. Big government invariable brings with it the transgender and climate change "religious" zealots, and the thorough politicization of medicine. If you like the government's COVID response, you'll love big government.

In the article: "advocate a conservatism that is comfortable with big government" does not sit well with me. After all, there are "big government" type of people and a lot of them think they are bigger than God. They seem to want to take God out of society so that they become the substitute. No thank you. The Old Testament was full of those kinds of people. This article comes across as my having to wave the surrender flag. There is no substitute for God. He is sovereign.

The "I won't change" theme posted here is a perfect exhibit of the author's point. In terms of practical politics and elections, saying "No!" without addressing the underlying issue in some fashion is a loser. The only times the people move away from liberalism is when the outcome hits the fan, and sometimes not even then. While few wish to admit it, we are all very left of center with every government dollar of benefit we take from every program "to help" created. Spend your stimulus? Cash your Soc Sec check? How many accept the notion of government control of money and thus controlling our "free" economy? We're all socialists now, continuously negotiating the price.

Scripture has addressed this well. More people need to read it, cover-to-cover, and find a nearby Bible church, join a group and get involved. In VA, we parents grew a classical Christian school from 17 students meeting at an abandoned elementary school, to an amazing 50-acre campus after raising $3M. Yes, it was hard word, but well worth it. God is still Sovereign!

So it comes as no surprise that sheltered, entitled, and ignorant professional athletes would share these same anti-white views. For supposedly being oppressed, there is no shortage of self-esteem among leftist blacks. If they truly feared for their lives, it goes without saying that they’d hesitate to make such remarks.

Diesel doesn’t get as much of the limelight as oil and gas, but it should because diesel fuel is the industrial lifeblood of the United States, and the price of diesel alone probably has a more significant impact on inflation and the prices you’re paying at the grocery store over any other factor. Without ample amounts of diesel, semi-trucks don’t move, farms are shut down, and critical manufacturing
