A group of 30 House liberals is urging President Biden to dramatically shift his strategy on the Ukraine war and pursue direct negotiations with Russia, the first time prominent members of his own party have pushed him to change his approach to Ukraine. A letter sent by the group to the White House on Monday, first reported by The Washington Post, could create more pressure on Biden as he tries to sustain domestic support for the war effort, at a time when the region is heading into a potentially difficult winter and Republicans are threatening to cut aid to Ukraine

Washington — Plastic recycling rates are declining even as production shoots up, according to a Greenpeace USA report out Monday that blasted industry claims of creating an efficient, circular economy as "fiction." Titled "Circular Claims Fall Flat Again," the study found that of 51 million tons of plastic waste generated by U.S. households in 2021, only 2.4 million tons were recycled, or around five percent. After peaking in 2014 at 10 percent, the trend has been decreasing, especially since China stopped accepting the West's plastic waste in 2018. Virgin production — of non-recycled plastic, that is — meanwhile is rapidly rising as the

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is under fire for claiming he doesn't know anyone who supports defunding the police despite appearing at a campaign event for Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., just days before. "I don’t know anybody who thinks we should defund the police," Ellison said during a debate on Sunday. But critics were quick to point out that Ellison knew at least two people who supported the Defund the Police movement, with the Republican National Committee pointing out that the incumbent attorney general had attended a rally in support of Omar and Rep. Cori Bush, D–Mo., both of whom

ATLANTA, Ga. - With 16 days left in Georgia’s nationally watched 2022 midterm campaigns, a new poll from a progressive think thank shows Democratic U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock with a one-point lead over GOP challenger Herschel Walker. The same poll from Data for Progress shows Gov. Brian Kemp leading his Democratic challenger, Stacey Abrams, by 10 points. The poll was conducted from Oct. 13-17 among 984 likely voters, and has a margin of error of plus/minus three percentage points. With that margin of error, the poll shows Warnock and Walker in a virtual tie. Libertarian Chase Oliver is polling at

Just a month after national Republicans appeared to give up on Arizona Republican Blake Masters, the Trump-backed Senate candidate has staged a comeback — and Arizona is in play. National and Arizona Democratic operatives are privately fretting that incumbent Sen. Mark Kelly is endangered, noting a shift by previously undecided voters toward the GOP, aided by a patchwork of new Republican spending to bolster Masters. Recent polling has shown Kelly’s lead shrinking to a few points, much tighter than surveys showed throughout August and September. “There’s a very narrow path to victory for Democrats in Arizona,” said Roy Herrera, a

As the midterm elections near, election rights advocates have sounded the alarm about what they say are serious cases of voter intimidation and restrictions against voters who have trouble reading their ballot. In some jurisdictions, election officials have scaled back the number of people and resources used to help those voters at polling stations read and properly cast their ballot. ABC News' "Start Here" spoke with ProPublica's Annie Waldman, who's been covering the issue and talked about recent cases that have taken place, particularly in Southern states. JONESBORO, Ga. – Carl Cox Jr., a 31-year-old software developer from Dallas, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta, voted for Democrat Raphael Warnock in the 2020 special election to fill the remaining two years of a U.S. Senate seat. But this year, he's having trouble getting excited about Georgia's U.S. Senate race, in which Warnock is running for reelection for a full six-year term. Cox pointed to the souring economy and his own "fatigue" with politics. He called Warnock, a second-year senator, a "lesser of two evils" in his reelection campaign against Republican Herschel Walker. And he cited the senator's support for abortion

Southern California law enforcement officials are warning residents to be extra cautious after a noted increase in crime and burglaries that are allegedly being committed by South American crime rings. The increase has been on the minds of many Angelenos in recent months, as follow-home robberies, catalytic converter thefts and a litany of other crimes have continued to make headlines. In July, police issued an alert to residents throughout the Southland, warning of an increase in robberies, and several law enforcement agencies have upped their task forces and patrols with seemingly no end in sight. The new measures, which took effect on Friday, stop people from buying, selling or transferring handguns within Canada, and prevents them from bringing newly bought handguns into the country. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the move builds on earlier efforts to ban handgun imports. Mr Trudeau announced a handgun freeze in May as part of his plan to tackle gun violence, his office said. "We have frozen the market for handguns in this country," Mr Trudeau said at a news conference in Surrey, British Columbia, attended by family members of gun violence victims and other advocates. Pennsylvania Democratic Senate hopeful John Fetterman's wife Gisele stepped in and shut down a reporter who asked the lieutenant governor if he was satisfied with the progress made of the downed Pittsburgh bridge. 'We're not here to do interviews, we're here to celebrate,' Gisele told reporter Kyle Mazza of UNF News, as the couple attended an event headlined by President Joe Biden at the worksite of the Fern Hollow Bridge - the site of the January bridge collapse. Fetterman has been using closed captioning to answer questions from journalists as he recovers from his May stroke, with a sit-down with NBC

Joe Biden took a rare stop to speak with reporters before departing the White House Thursday – but instead of just answering questions, the president berated journalists asking about his campaign stops and abortion restrictions. One reporter was called a 'kid' while the president told another to 'educate' themselves. Biden, who was leaving for events in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with Democratic Senate candidate John Fetterman, jogged over to the line of reporters gathered for his departure and yelled over the sounds of Marine One while delivering staccato answers to reporters. 'John Fetterman's gonna appear with you today in Pennsylvania, but
