How serious is Newsom on taxing ‘greedy’
oil companies? He’s calling a special session

A week after proposing to levy a new tax on oil companies, California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday called for state legislators to convene in Sacramento for a special session in December to hammer out the plan. In response to a historic surge in gas prices in the Golden State, Newsom last week proposed a tax on oil companies to fund rebates for California taxpayers getting squeezed at the pump. During a press gaggle on Friday, the Democratic governor announced the special session for Dec. 5 — about a month after dozens of new lawmakers will be elected to office. Newsom

Comments:

Why wait until after the midterm elections? Probably because such a tax would increase prices even more, and hamper supplies.

This will have the exact opposite desired outcome. In addition to higher prices, expect shortages. And probably companies moving out of California. They could also shut down the California oil extraction.

Raise taxes and oil companies will raise prices to compensate and the consumer will be no better off. And you can bet that most of the tax revenue will go to wasteful things.

If any Republican has a chance to win any office in Cal, they should be running ads showing gas prices going up and/or oil companies refusing to do business in Cal or taking jobs out of the state.

Who is the greedy one? The oil companies who actually produce and sell a commodity that consumers actually want, or the California government who produces nothing and just taxes and taxes and taxes to punish success.

NBC News found itself facing accusations of both partisanship and insensitivity this week after reporter Dasha Burns interviewed John Fetterman for his first extended sit-down interview since suffering a stroke earlier this year. (Snip) And Burns was far from the only journalist to share that analysis. CBS’s Ed O’Keefe ponderingly tweeted about whether “Pennsylvanians [will] be comfortable with someone representing them who had to conduct a TV interview this way?" The resulting wave of anger was immediate and two-folded. Burns and NBC (as well as others who shared the opinion) found themselves caught in the middle of two arguments: firstly

Inflation clocked in worse than expected at 8.2% for the 12 months ending in September according to the consumer price index, bad news for the country’s economic health. The much-anticipated numbers reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Thursday revealed that while it ticked down by one-tenth of a percentage point, inflation is still higher than anticipated and defying the Federal Reserve's aggressive interest rate hikes. Worse, "core inflation," which strips out volatile food and energy prices, rose sharply in September. On an annual basis, it rose to a whopping 6.6%, the highest since 1982. The Thursday morning report

Inflation at the wholesale level rose more than expected in September as prices for everyday necessities remain at a multi-decade high, squeezing businesses and millions of American households. The Labor Department said Wednesday that its producer price index, which measures inflation at the wholesale level before it reaches consumers, rose 0.4% in September from the previous month. On an annual basis, prices soared 8.5%. Those figures were both higher than the 8.3% headline figure and 0.3% monthly gain forecast by Refinitiv economists, a worrisome sign for the Federal Reserve as it seeks to cool price gains and tame consumer demand

With the November election just weeks away, Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams is dealing with an unusual political problem. She has become a star on the national political stage. One problem is tepid enthusiasm among a key segment of the Democratic base: Black men. One-third of Black men registered in Georgia haven’t voted in the past several elections, with pollsters
