The man charged with stabbing a Queens EMS lieutenant to death in a “barbaric and completely unprovoked” attack has a history of schizophrenia, police sources said. Peter Zisopoulos, 34, was charged with murder and weapon’s possession for Thursday’s attack a few steps from EMS Station 49 on 20th Ave. near 41st St. in Astoria, according to the NYPD. This is Zisopoulos’ first arrest, cops said. His only other interaction with the police was in 2018 when he was accused of making threats against Asians. He was hospitalized, but never charged, police said. On Thursday, EMS Lt. Alison Russo-Elling, 61, was on duty and heading to a nearby deli

We used to lock the violently mentally ill in mental institutions, against their will, to protect the rest of normal society from their violent tendencies.
Now we are "more compassionate" and let them roam the streets, live under bridges in in parks, crapping in the streets and murdering and beating people. See how much smarter the Dems are than the old fashioned ways?
/s off
We need a BUNCH of large mental institutions, with bars on the windows, and we need to start filling them up.

The killer's eyes show that he is completely insane and had no business wandering the streets. The victim, who was a World Trade Center responder 9/11, was just a few months away from her retirement. So there again the city saves some money.

2, yes crazy but incapable of rational thought and moral judgement so not POS. Broken, not evil. Compassion.
A huge number of homeless are super crazy and need help but the left requires us to dump them on the streets to suffer horrible short lives and sometimes hurt and kill others.

#2, frig off with your "compassion" b.s. You have to be evil to do something like this.
My compassion is saved for the loved ones of the murdered lady.

Millions of unhinged voters elect the "compassionate" goons that pass laws allowing wackos, addicts, murderers, etc., to room the streets without regard for "We, the People." Elections DO have consequences!

It’s tough to have compassion for anyone in NYC, San Francisco, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Portland, Seattle, etc.
You get the government you elect in the USA. When the enemy is destroying itself, back-off and let them reap the spoils of Democrat votes. Not the least bit sorry for NYC. It’s got a “brand,” doncha know … not like Kansas.

I have schizophrenic in my family. It's easy to sit here behind a keyboard and declare evil and how sick and broken people, even those who hurt and even murder others are evil.
I hope no one in your family ever falls victim to it. It usually strikes in the 20s. Do you know any teenagers? Because once they start hearing voices 24x7 telling them to do horrible things they eventually will. No one asks for it. It is not caused by drug abuse or anything else under their control. Sometimes something just breaks.
They need help and it's not their fault society has dumped them on the streets to die slow horrible miserable deaths and to hurt themselves and others. If you think "oh he ran away therefore he wasn't insane and is evil and knew what he was doing" then no, you don't understand the most basic things about it. Hollywood has poisoned the world with nonsense to create plot lines.
Yes. Compassion.

I don't give a good damn about his history. He murdered a person and needs to have his life ended by execution.

"Compassion" is what led to schizophrenics being dumped in the streets. California led the nation is this in the 70's. It was considered inhumane to institutionalize the mentally ill. The problem is that schizophrenics will not consistently take their meds and enter into a cycle of "I feel fine, I don't need to take my pills". It effects less than 0.64 % of population. (NIMH) It is not an excuse to murder.

Those of us old enough to remember the 2nd worst President of all time, Jimmy Carter, know that he cleaned out the mental institutions and put the schizophrenics out on the street. Then when Reagan was elected, they blamed the homeless crisis on Reagan. Sadly, there is still a need to institutionalize some of these patients. They won’t take their medications and hate the side effects.

Had to go to a big city today to a hospital. I saw a street person lying on a piece of cardboard next to the hospital in a sleeping bag with a winter cap on. Something new for me to observe (and no, I didn't help him because i was afraid). But I watched as at least 100+ people walked around him. No one offered food, money, supplies or help of any kind. He obviously was mentally impaired or on drugs. I guess the city just waits until they die?

Truly mentally ill people need our compassion but letting them roam the streets murdering people is not compassion. They need to be institutionalized but the left thinks that it is denying them their “freedom” or something. The compassionate thing would be be to put them in secure facilities and treat them as best we can. I will reserve my compassion for this woman’s children and grandchildren. That said, I have I have a mentally ill relative that really needs help but the family can’t afford the care he needs. We need the institutions back. He is a danger to himself and others. I have offered financial help but the parents are in denial and say he is fine.

Compassion: I will say it _again_ because only a few people seem to read before blasting off a post.
Leftist dumping people on the street was not compassionate. It was evil. It was horrible for society, horrible for the mentally I'll and horrible for the people attacked by the mentally ill.
So, -again-, they need to be taken off the streets, the mentally given the medications and care they need and kept in custody if they are simply non-functional even with help and the drug users and alcoholics need to be sobered up and not freed until they are and are capable of holding down a job and supporting themselves.
For those who still don't get it and scream about state sponsored execution of the mentally ill, I am torn between saying you simply don't understand and need to self educate how we got to where we are and the fixes for it vs just telling you how I think you're terrible people who completely lack humanity. Yes, this one guy murdered someone. Let's blindly execute him and not look into how he came to where he was. Then we can just wait around for all the others to follow his path and execute them all after each one has killed some innocent person.
Ugh. Stop feeling like a leftist and think like a conservative who is concerned about society and the long term effects of policies.

Sure, but it costs a lot of money to keep insane people institutionalized. Money that could go toward fat government salaries and benefits, and welfare programs for Newcomers.
