From interest rates to the weekly shop, the cost of living is rising faster than it has for decades. But the question is: has the price of happiness gone up as well? And if so, what can we do about it?
Let’s set things straight. Yes, money matters for happiness. If you’ve ever had to choose between putting food on the table and paying the electricity bill, this is not news to you. While money is not a guarantee of happiness, being without money is a common cause of stress, worry and unhappiness.(Snip)This is what hygge is all about. Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda told reporters Thursday that California’s ban on the sale of new gas-powered vehicles in 2035 will be “difficult” to achieve, given present battery technology and constraints facing the state’s electricity grid. As Fox News reported, Toyoda was reacting to the new mandate imposed by California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and the powerful California Air Resources Board (CARB), which will require almost all new car sales to involve electric vehicles in just 12 years.(Snip)“Realistically speaking, it seems rather difficult to really achieve them,” Toyota Motor Corporation President Akio Toyoda told reporters through a translator on Thursday discussing California’s new mandates.

In an all-too-tellingly-empty stunt, Gov. Kathy Hochul last week ordered the state Department of Environmental Conservation to issue regulations banning the sale of gas-powered cars, pickups and SUVs by… 2035. It’s not just that she’ll be long gone by then, or that she was simply marking National Drive Electric Week by pretending to keep up with California’s similarly dubious 2035 only-electric rule.
Nor that, as even The New York Times admits, electric cars are still far too expensive and impractical for all but the rich—with vast technological and industrial progress needed before they make sense even for the middle class. Not to mention building hundreds

Sen. Rick Scott on Sunday responded with reluctant criticism of former President Donald Trump‘s verbal jab at Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and his wife, Elaine Chao. Mr. Trump on Friday lambasted Mr. McConnell as having a “DEATH WISH” for helping pass a stopgap funding bill to avoid a government shutdown and mocked Ms. Chao, who had served as his Transportation secretary.
“Must immediately seek help and advise from his China loving wife, Coco Chow!” Mr. Trump posted on his social media site Truth Social.
Mr. Scott of Florida, chairman of Senate Republicans’ campaign arm, initially dodged a question about whether such rhetoric was appropriate before he condemned it.

Weddings booked by Britons at a stunning Victorian country mansion have been cancelled after the Home Office announced it needed the hotel for migrants. At least three weddings have reportedly been cancelled at the Grade II-listed Stoke Rochford Hall in Lincolnshire:(Snip)The historic mansion, run by Countrywide Hotels, was already hosting migrants under what local media describes a “compulsory contract” with the government, and was forced to cancel the planned weddings after being told it was required to take on even more. “The hotel has received notification from the Home Office that the current government contract is to be extended to take additional families with immediate effect,”

A London park named for four-time prime minister William Gladstone, one of the most famous premiers of the Victoria era, will be transformed into a “slavery garden” at the behest of the Labour-run local government. Brent London Borough Council, which is dominated by Labour Party councillors, are paying ethnic minority artists to populate the part with prickly plants from Africa and other areas to “[mirror] the emotions contested history can elicit… something may seem pleasant enough from a distance, but uncomfortable when seen up close”, according to a horticulturist quoted by The Telegraph.(Snip)Now, however, leftist academics and activists have tried to link him to slavery

A woke liberal arts college has introduced a new masking policy that would require all students in a class to wear face masks if a single person requests them using an anonymous survey. Under the new policy at Amherst College in Massachusetts, each student and teacher would be provided an anonymous survey in which they could express their views on whether they want a mask mandate in their classroom.
The new guidance was created by Catherine Epstein, provost and dean of faculty at the Massachusetts school, who wrote to her colleagues on September 29 that the new policy will go into effect on October 17.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp railed Sunday against a push for the Atlanta Braves to change their name and ditch their tomahawk chop and battle cry in response to accusations they’re offensive to American Indians. “This is just the woke cancel culture, and really national values, that are trying to be pushed down to our states and other states around the country, which is why we’ve got to stand up and fight for what our values are in the state of Georgia,” Mr. Kemp said on “Fox News Sunday.” The Republican is running for reelection against Democrat Stacey Abrams. Rep. Mark Pocan, a Wisconsin Democrat, is pushing legislation that would establish a national museum of American LGBTQ+ History and Culture in the nation’s capital. The lawmaker has filed bills that would establish a commission to study the potential creation of the museum and house it within the Smithsonian Institution. The eight-member commission would have 18 months to study the viability of creating and constructing the museum in Washington. Mr. Pocan, who is gay, said the LGBT community must be able to tell its stories.

Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed a law Friday that will decriminalize jaywalking across California, ending the familiar practice of police handing out tickets to pedestrians on the argument that the law is enforced more often against minorities than other people. The new law, AB 2147, known as the “Freedom to Walk Act,” could bring an end to a cultural difference that has marked otherwise libertine Californians as being uniquely deferential to laws governing pedestrian traffic. The difference between Californians, who ostensibly tend to obey “don’t walk” signals, and urban dwellers elsewhere in the country, who are notoriously defiant when it comes to crossing against traffic signals, was lampooned

German Federal Economy Minister Robert Habeck expressed concern over the looming energy crisis this winter, telling German media that the situation was extremely tense and there is a possibility that Germany may run out of gas. Habeck spoke on Friday, appealing to Germans to reduce their consumption of natural gas ahead of this winter a day after the German government launched a new price break programme to help Germans with the rising costs of energy. The new price break policy will cover 80 per cent of regular consumption in a bid to try and get Germans to use less gas and make the scenario of shortages less likely.

The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is still missing Trump administration records that it sought after the former president's term ended, the agency said in a letter on Friday. 'The National Archives has confirmed to the Oversight Committee that they still have not received all presidential records from the Trump White House,' Acting Archivist Debra Steidel Wall said. Wall said the Department of Justice (DOJ) would be consulted about whether 'to initiate an action for the recovery of records unlawfully removed' by White House officials. Further information about what action could be taken remains unclear, but the DoJ's warning raises the specter of another potential raid
