Hurricane Ian sweeps away section of Sanibel

Hurricane Ian destroyed a section of the Sanibel Causeway connecting Sanibel Island and Captiva with mainland Florida, preventing all access for ground vehicles. Meteorologist Bryan Bennett first showed the collapsed section on Twitter, revealing a missing portion of the causeway dozens of feet long. Storm reporters with the Tampa Bay Times also confirmed the damage, saying the missing section comes right before the bridge rises up toward the island. Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis confirmed the Sanibel Causeway is "not passable" during a Thursday press briefing. He said both the causeway and the nearby Pine Island Bridge will both require

This won't be an easy fix. I wonder if a ferry can be used to access the island in the meantime.

The West Coast has been lucky for a long time. When was the last time Sarasota and St. Pete were hit? Bueller? Okay. I googled it. 1846 for Sarasota. I don't believe it, but it's apparently fairly rare...

My son loves Sanibel. The word is that a big storm makes the shell gathering spectacular. He was actually thinking about a trip there when everything calmed down. That’s out now. Probably months to get the causeway repaired and no places left to rent.

Commercial ferry service could start up within a few weeks with the political will to do so. Knowing it would be temporary, the infrastructure costs, like a pair of ticket offices housed in portable construction trailers, would minimize throw-away costs as the causeway is repaired. For outsourced service, the third-party provider would be responsible for maintenance on the vessels. Key West, Marco Island and Fort Meyers Beach are served by modern, efficient ferry vessels, like the Big Cat Express catamaran so the concept is well established in South Florida, close to Sanibel. While attending to some business at the SW Florida International Airport in Ft Meyers, I took the ferry from Ft Meyers to Key West in order to snap some pictures of the Southern Cross constellation as it rose a few degrees above the horizon a few years ago.

Pine Island(next to Sanibel) has also been cutoff by a similar bridge collapse. There are erector set like bridges that can be put up in days. Best guess is that with a full effort, access to both islands might be restored in a few weeks. My house was/is in St. James City. What I have deducted from a few pictures of nearby streets my house may now only be a concrete slab. My modem stopped answering a ping at 9:23AM Wednesday likely due to a power failure at that time. The surge was a few hours later. I'll be pinging everyday but really I expect the earliest to be three weeks from now. However, It's more likely I won't be pinging a modem until we rebuild. Our street was beautiful. Manatees swim in the canal in my back yard everyday. Ospreys squawking all the time. My next door neighbor said we are living in paradise. He's right. We were just thinking about selling our Georgia house and moving to the Pine Island house permanently. That idea is tabled. If you like the beach Sanibel is the place. If you like boating Pine Island is the place. A boat can take you to lots of beaches including Cayo Costa. Twenty-five minutes and a boat gets you to my favorite restaurant The Green Flash in Captiva. I hope I get to dine there again.

Russia is facing the prospect of another raft of sanctions on prominent individuals and sectors of the economy after it oversaw a series of sham referendums in four Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, and is expected to annex those regions imminently. Condemned by Ukraine and its Western allies, the votes showed a resounding majority voted to join Russia, although the elections were widely seen as rigged and many irregular voting practices were reported. The EU proposed an eighth package of sanctions on Russia yesterday in response to the referendums, and the U.S. said it will announce more sanctions “in the coming

DETROIT -- Demolition of the long-vacant Packard auto plant in Detroit started Thursday as crews began tearing apart an already crumbling exterior wall of the massive structure. A demolition claw ripped and tugged on decades-old bricks and concrete along the upper floors of the old eastside factory that for generations has been a symbol of urban blight in the Motor City. (Snip) The Packard Automotive Co. built the plant in 1903, but by 1954, the structure had become obsolete and Packard car production was being done elsewhere. The company would go out of business a few years later. Detroit took over

Video of President Joe Biden saying that he would "end" the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has resurfaced after Nord Stream 1 and 2 were damaged in what's been described as an act of sabotage. Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested on Monday that Biden could be responsible for the damage to the Russian-owned pipelines, neither of which were operational when they experienced major leaks into the Baltic Sea. Several Twitter users shared an ABC News video of Biden from February 7, 2022, discussing Nord Stream 2 and appeared to link his previous remarks with damage to the pipelines. "Now

California finds itself on edge more than ever with a lingering fear: the threat of rolling blackouts for years to come. Despite new power plants, building huge battery storage systems and restarting some shuttered fossil fuel generators over the past couple of years, California relies heavily on energy from other states — the cavalry rushing over a distant hill. Sometimes the support does not show up when expected or at all. That was the case this month, when millions of residents got cellphone alerts urging them to cut their energy use as the state teetered close to blackouts in blazing heat.

Scientists fear they've found the next big pandemic threat — a virus that lives in monkeys in Africa. Simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) causes devastating internal bleeding and kills virtually every primate it infects. It hijacks the immune system, disabling key defense mechanisms and breaking the body down cell by cell. No cases have been detected in humans yet but it is 'poised for a spillover', according to US researchers. By developing tests and monitoring the virus now 'the global health community could potentially avoid another pandemic', they said. Experts at the University of Colorado Boulder are raising the alarm due to SHFV's 'compatibility… with humans'. In a lab study,

President Biden once again shirked any responsibility for skyrocketing gas prices and instead demanded that gas stations cut prices at the pump for drivers despite their costs to stay in business being dictated by the market. Taxation and crushing regulation as well as progressive policies have a lot to do with it. It’s almost as if Biden and the left want to drive gas stations out of business.
