Russia is facing the prospect of another raft of sanctions on prominent individuals and sectors of the economy after it oversaw a series of sham referendums in four Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, and is expected to annex those regions imminently. Condemned by Ukraine and its Western allies, the votes showed a resounding majority voted to join Russia, although the elections were widely seen as rigged and many irregular voting practices were reported. The EU proposed an eighth package of sanctions on Russia yesterday in response to the referendums, and the U.S. said it will announce more sanctions “in the coming

Putin intends to annex all of Ukraine, and always has planned to do this. Putin has written that he believes that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was "the greatest calamity of the 20th century". Never mind those minor bobbles of history that we call WW1, or WW2, or millions starved or enslaved in China, or murdered in Cambodia, but the "greatest calamity" is whole countries slipping out of the iron grip of the largest totalitarian regime on Asia to be free. Others, especially those who escaped the iron grip of the Russians considered the breakup to be a release from prison, an escape from chains. And they do not intend to easily go back to the Russian gulag, no matter how much Putin and his fellow jailers think it is a good thing.

Obviously the people in those regions consider themselves to be either Russians or Ukrainians, so it is natural for the people who consider themselves to be Russians to go with Russia and the people who consider themselves to be Ukrainians to go with Ukraine. The problem comes in because not all the people in those regions consider themselves to be of one heritage and nationality. When the Soviet Union broke up that was the time to negotiate amiable borders between Russia and Ukraine, that did not happen, so now those borders will finally be defined by the victors of kinetic battles.

A new story in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel details a litany of controversial tweets from Democrat Mandela Barnes that touch on a whole variety of issues. As detailed by the Journal Sentinel, his tweets included him panning “progressives moving to the center” as people who are “compromising all integrity to appease the extreme.” In another that’s likely to find its way into an ad soon, he jokingly referred to New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as “my president.” He also asked if the 2016 election was “rigged.” And after Louisiana Republican Rep. Steve Scalise said that being shot didn’t change his

Hurricane Ian destroyed a section of the Sanibel Causeway connecting Sanibel Island and Captiva with mainland Florida, preventing all access for ground vehicles. Meteorologist Bryan Bennett first showed the collapsed section on Twitter, revealing a missing portion of the causeway dozens of feet long. Storm reporters with the Tampa Bay Times also confirmed the damage, saying the missing section comes right before the bridge rises up toward the island. Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis confirmed the Sanibel Causeway is "not passable" during a Thursday press briefing. He said both the causeway and the nearby Pine Island Bridge will both require

DETROIT -- Demolition of the long-vacant Packard auto plant in Detroit started Thursday as crews began tearing apart an already crumbling exterior wall of the massive structure. A demolition claw ripped and tugged on decades-old bricks and concrete along the upper floors of the old eastside factory that for generations has been a symbol of urban blight in the Motor City. (Snip) The Packard Automotive Co. built the plant in 1903, but by 1954, the structure had become obsolete and Packard car production was being done elsewhere. The company would go out of business a few years later. Detroit took over

Video of President Joe Biden saying that he would "end" the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline has resurfaced after Nord Stream 1 and 2 were damaged in what's been described as an act of sabotage. Fox News host Tucker Carlson suggested on Monday that Biden could be responsible for the damage to the Russian-owned pipelines, neither of which were operational when they experienced major leaks into the Baltic Sea. Several Twitter users shared an ABC News video of Biden from February 7, 2022, discussing Nord Stream 2 and appeared to link his previous remarks with damage to the pipelines. "Now

The embassy warned that the ability to leave Russia has already become increasingly difficult with limited commercial flights and crowded border check points. California finds itself on edge more than ever with a lingering fear: the threat of rolling blackouts for years to come. Despite new power plants, building huge battery storage systems and restarting some shuttered fossil fuel generators over the past couple of years, California relies heavily on energy from other states — the cavalry rushing over a distant hill. Sometimes the support does not show up when expected or at all. That was the case this month, when millions of residents got cellphone alerts urging them to cut their energy use as the state teetered close to blackouts in blazing heat.

They now want the school to relocate the transgender player, who hasn't been named. No details of the alleged inappropriate remark have been shared. The day after Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida, President Joe Biden issued his forecast: “This could be the deadliest hurricane in Florida’s history.” Was he hoping it would be? Or is he just ignorant of the history of hurricanes? “The numbers are still unclear,” Biden said, “but we’re hearing early reports of what could be substantial loss of life.” So far, the death toll in Florida from Ian is a little more than 20. That number will no doubt rise, but it is far short of the deadliest, and might be one of the least deadly hurricanes to hit that hurricane-prone state. The deadliest record was set in
