Vladimir Putin granted Russian citizenship to former U.S. intelligence contractor Edward Snowden on Monday, nine years after the whistleblower fled to Russia. Snowden announced he was applying for Russian citizenship in 2020 on account of his son, but that he would be keeping his American citizenship. “After years of separation from our parents, my wife and I have no desire to be separated from our son. That’s why, in this era of pandemics and closed borders, we’re applying for dual US-Russian citizenship,” Snowden wrote on Twitter. “Lindsay and I will remain Americans, raising our son with all the values of the America we love, including the freedom to speak his mind.

Most Americans don’t realize it but besides characters like Snowden, the vast majority of legal immigrants who have been allowed into the USA during the modern era have retained their home country citizenships after they applied for and were naturalized as US citizens. When the happens, as it does all the time, retaining a foreign allegiance and citizenship is contrary to the oath that immigrants take during naturalization ceremonies. Other than in the naturalization oath provisions, there is really no direct mention or provision for so-called “duel citizenship” or “duel nationality” in U.S. naturalization law. The problem with so-called “duel citizenship” or “duel nationality” is that it is really impossible to determine actually to what country such a person holds his or her true allegiance. So in practical terms a person of foreign origin can become naturalized as a U.S. citizen, while covertly retaining his or her foreign country allegiances and citizenship, when all the while when in the USA being considered to be just a U.S. citizen able to obtain employment in supposed security positions in government or industry. Once in those positions such people can learn all sorts of vital government and/or industrial secrets, and then after a few years simply return to their home country with such knowledge where the person can then use his or her knowledge, or either give or sell that knowledge to foreign countries or entities, to compete against US interests in defense or industry. When you have about a million immigrants being naturalized as US citizens every year there is a lot of room for such misfeasance.

I agree #3, and I think those concerns of somebody insisting on dual citizenship should be taken seriously now that so many legal immigrants are running for elected office! Dr. Oz comes to mind.

I'm with #5. Although I didn't agree with what he did at the time, it's become apparent since then that going to the media to tell his story would have gone nowwhere. As it turned out, we're all smarter and less naive about what our federal government is up to.

The real reason Putin is granting Snowden citizenship is so he can be drafted and sent to the Ukrainian war front.

Edward Snowden has always, and will continue to be, a hero to me! Although 'dual citizenship' is one of my pet peeves for the reasons #3 has expressed, I do not blame the Snowdens at all for not wanting to risk separation from their young son. I would do the same in their shoes! I suspect Putin's rationale at this time is nothing more than a 'stick in the eye' at his Western enemies.

China posed as conservatives and liberals

Meta said Tuesday that it took down a China-based influence operation featuring fake accounts impersonating conservatives criticizing President Biden and liberals ripping Republicans in states like Florida, Texas and California. The influence operation was relatively small in size and received low engagement online, but could be a harbinger of activity to come as the U.S. midterm elections approach and foreign actors aim to inflame tensions online. The China-based actors used 81 Facebook accounts, and two Instagram accounts, and targeted an American audience, Chinese- and French-speaking audiences, and people in the Czech Republic.

Progressives who are still reeling from the end of Roe v Wade are already expecting the worst from the Supreme Court’s next term which starts next week. One of the big issues the court will be considering in the next term is affirmative action in college admissions. Time published a primer yesterday. The high court will hear two cases this term that could determine the constitutionality of race-conscious admissions policies—and the decision could fundamentally reshape higher education across America. The high court will hear both cases on Oct. 31. The group Students for Fair Admissions, which says its mission is to help “restore colorblind principles to our nation’s schools, colleges and universities,”

Sacramento - A libertarian group of attorneys based in Sacramento filed a legal challenge to President Joe Biden's plan for student debt cancellation on Tuesday, calling it an illegal overreach that would increase state tax burdens for some Americans who get their debt forgiven. The lawsuit, believed to be the first targeting Biden's plan, was filed by the Pacific Legal Foundation, a Sacramento law firm. It was filed in federal court in Indiana, one of several states that plan to tax any student debt canceled by Biden's plan. "Congress did not authorize the executive branch to unilaterally cancel student debt,"

Climate change cultists and their supporters are some of the most hypocritical people you will ever come across, not to mention rank at about 20 on a scale of one to ten when it comes to sanctimonious righteousness. But every once in a while, some of them end up getting their just deserts, and that is exactly what some are saying happened to Wellington, Australia teen climate change activist Izzy Cook, who went on a New Zealand radio program Friday to talk about her and her fellow students’ participation in the annual School Strike for Climate worldwide “protest” that took place last week. But during the course of the interview, host Heather du Plessis-Allan questioned

Sen. Joe Manchin’s humiliation was brought to completion on Tuesday after his Democrat-negotiated permitting reform deal officially fell through. Per RedState’s previous reporting, Manchin stabbed Republicans in the back during the summer, waiting until the CHIPS Act passed before doing an about-face on a big-spending reconciliation bill full of “climate change” payoffs. The West Virginia senator had supposedly struck a deal whereby he would pass the falsely named Inflation Reduction Act in exchange for Democrat support for permitting reform for oil and gas projects.

Biden’s botched withdrawal from Afghanistan may have tanked his approval ratings, but record inflation and soaring gas prices kept them underwater. As fuel prices reached historic highs, Biden stubbornly refused to do anything that would increase domestic supply, opting instead to buy fuel from overseas before eventually raiding the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. It was a foolish thing to do, and while gas prices have gone down, the impact of raiding the reserves is debatable. But one thing is for sure: Biden depleted the reserves, which are now at a 37-year low, to boost his poll numbers. Now that Hurricane Ian is headed for Florida, the folly

It may never be possible to determine definitively whether Monday’s underwater explosions at the two Nord Stream gas pipelines were the work of Russian sabotage, but it is certainly the way to bet. The incidents took place close to – but just outside – the 12-mile territorial waters of Denmark’s Bornholm in the Baltic Sea, the kind of calibration that might be expected from a state actor mindful of the country’s Nato membership. What is not immediately clear is how any attack would have been carried out. A submarine targeting the pipelines should have been detected in the Baltic’s relatively shallow waters, where depths rarely exceed 100 metres.

California finds itself on edge more than ever with a lingering fear: the threat of rolling blackouts for years to come. Despite new power plants, building huge battery storage systems and restarting some shuttered fossil fuel generators over the past couple of years, California relies heavily on energy from other states — the cavalry rushing over a distant hill. Sometimes the support does not show up when expected or at all. That was the case this month, when millions of residents got cellphone alerts urging them to cut their energy use as the state teetered close to blackouts in blazing heat.
