The United States Senate passed a short-term government funding bill on Thursday after over two dozen Republicans crossed party lines to avert a shutdown.
In an 72-25 vote, the Senate passed a funding measure meant to keep the government afloat until December 16. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said the more than two-month extension would allow lawmakers from both sides of the aisle one last chance at negotiating a year-long budget deal before the new Congress takes office in January.
"Let's hope this is the last [stop gap], they do so we get an omnibus [budget] done in December," said Schumer, D-N.Y.

Nebraska, Missouri, Arkansas, Kansas, Iowa, and South Carolina joined together to file a lawsuit against the Biden administration on Thursday in an attempt to stop the president’s announced student loan-forgiveness program from taking effect.
“In addition to being economically unwise and downright unfair, the Biden Administration’s Mass Debt Cancellation is yet another example in a long line of unlawful regulatory actions,” argued the plaintiffs in their filing.
The administration has said that it will wipe out up to $10,000 in loans for borrowers making under $125,000 per year, and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients who meet that criteria. Married persons filing jointly will be able to take advantage of

If a week is a long time in politics, 24-hours can seem like an eternity, especially when a White House administration is confused by basic historical facts.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris amply illustrated this Thursday when she ended her four-day trip to Asia with a journey to the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) dividing the Korean Peninsula. During the stop she confused onlooks by asserting the United States has a “strong alliance” with “the Republic of North Korea.” “It is an alliance that is strong and enduring,” she added, intending to refer to the Republic of Korea, which is South Korea’s official name.
Her gaffe came barely 24-hours

NATO has concluded that the leaks that recently emerged on the Nord Stream pipelines were the result of sabotage by some unknown actor, the military alliance announced in a Thursday statement.
The North Atlantic Council, the decision-making body for NATO, didn’t name a culprit in the statement, but threatened a military response against the responsible party.
“All currently available information indicates that this is the result of deliberate, reckless, and irresponsible acts of sabotage,” the council said in a statement. “We, as Allies, have committed to prepare for, deter and defend against the coercive use of energy and other hybrid tactics by state and non-state actors. Any deliberate attack

Los Angeles rapper Coolio, who rose to the national spotlight in the 1990s with his Grammy-winning hit "Gangsta's Paradise," died on Wednesday, his longtime manager Jarez Posey confirmed to ABC News. He was 59.
Coolio, whose legal name is Artis Leon Ivey Jr., was found unresponsive Wednesday afternoon while visiting a friend's house, and emergency personnel were called after he didn't come out of the bathroom, according to Posey. A cause of death has not yet been determined but an investigation is ongoing." We are saddened by the loss of our dear friend and client, Coolio, who passed away this afternoon," Coolio's representative, Sheila Finegan, executive partner at Trinity Artists International,

We’ve been writing about Hurricane Ian bearing down on Florida and now we’re seeing some videos of how bad it’s getting down there.
As we reported earlier, a camera from The Weather Channel in Ft. Myers, Florida, was completely submerged underwater despite it being positioned six-feet high. That was happening all over the area, as the water from the storm surge flooded in. It’s up to the roofs in some areas of Fort Myers and Fort Myers Beach. It reminds me of pictures of tsunamis. Let’s hope that people got out of there because reports are that it’s wild there.

Nothing tests the mettle of a governor like a natural disaster, with hurricanes being among the worst. Emergency efforts include everything from rescue and recovery of victims, to restoration of power, to distribution of needed supplies, to rebuilding cities affected by the storm. Hurricane Ian, a massive Category 4 storm, made landfall in Florida on Wednesday afternoon, but the worst may be yet to come with storm surges, massive power outages that could last for days, and major rainfall expected.
During a press conference on Wednesday evening, Gov. Ron DeSantis warned that Floridians are still “in a very hazardous situation.” But he assured residents that the state

The NY Times published this report today. The call intercepts in question aren’t recent but come from back in March.
The New York Times has exclusively obtained recordings of thousands of calls that were made throughout March and intercepted by Ukrainian law enforcement agencies from this pivotal location.
Reporters verified the authenticity of these calls by cross-referencing the Russian phone numbers with messaging apps and social media profiles to identify soldiers and family members. The Times spent almost two months translating the recordings, which have been edited for clarity and length.

Nate Cohn, chief political reporter for the New York Times, delivers some straight talk that should worry Democrats a lot:
The post-Dobbs bump for Democrats is over and the political terrain has returned to where it was in April. And that is really really bad news for Democrats. You may have noticed that Democrats don’t want to talk about anything besides abortion. Here in Minnesota it is what every liberal political ad is about. The governor threw in an ad about how much he loves education (he is a former teacher), but pretty much every utterance he makes is about Republican extremism on abortion.
It is all they have. Voters are unhappy

Wednesday has been a banner day for Joe Biden’s senility, and as of this writing, it’s only lunchtime.
Per RedState’s prior reporting, in one of the more incredible and sad moments of his presidency, Biden called out for deceased congresswoman Jackie Walorski while hosting a conference on hunger and nutrition. Before her tragic death in a car accident, Walorski had co-sponsored the bill that established the event. Biden had apparently forgotten about her passing despite putting a statement on it and signing a bill meant to honor her recently. Worse, after the president’s stunning moment, the White House apparently pulled the plug on a tribute video that was set to play

There’s a new report about the coming Cabinet shake-up being eyed by the White House after the November midterms.
According to Axios, White House officials (notice they say White House officials, not Biden) are considering a “broad reorganization of President Biden’s economic team.” This is part of a shake-up being done by White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain, who has former administration officials Jeff Zients and Natalie Quillian making up lists of people for Cabinet and senior administrative positions. Among the people who the report is pointing to as likely to get the boot are Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and Brian Deese, the director of the National Economic Council.

A female University of Kentucky swimmer who competed against transgender athlete Lia Thomas’s participation in women’s swimming said Wednesday that many University of Pennsylvania team members expressed their gratitude for her advocacy for fairness in women’s sports.
“I actually had a ton of Lia Thomas’ teammates reach out to me personally, and thank me for what I’m doing because this is something they deal with every single day,” Riley Gaines said, alongside Senator Rand Paul, during an appearance on Fox and Friends. “But of course, they’re intimidated, they’re threatened, they’re emotionally blackmailed.”
