Madrid/Helsinki - NATO ally Turkey lifted its veto over Finland and Sweden's bid to join the Western alliance on Tuesday after the three nations agreed to protect each other's security, ending a weeks-long drama that tested allied unity against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The breakthrough came after four hours of talks just before a NATO summit began in Madrid, averting an embarrassing impasse at the gathering of 30 leaders that aims to show resolve against Russia, now seen by the U.S.-led alliance as a direct security threat rather than a possible adversary. It means Helsinki and Stockholm can proceed with their application to join the nuclear-armed alliance, cementing

One of Putin's so-called reasons to invade Ukraine was that he did not want Ukraine joining NATO. So, will he now invade Finland?

It's a dangerous game to play, poking an unstable bear with a stick. Russia has enough nukes to end the world, but it isn't Russia's decision whether to use them or not: it's Putin's decision. So I see the risk, (which is a tragedy worse than all the previous tragedies in human history combined), but I don't see the reward. We not get to pay Finland's Defense budget as well as the rest of Europes? That it?

yes #4 and I'll wager at US taxpayer's expense. #3 and #7 are correct. NATO ceased being a defense treaty org when they attacked the Balkans and Libya. I am no Russia / Putin fan but Putin drew the red line on Ukraine back in 2008 but NATO keeps poking the Bear as if they want a full blown war. What was Ukraine going to do for NATO anyway? Oh, buy Western Weapons System!!!! Now we are giving then to Ukraine and we will rebuild Ukraine and our grandchildren will pay for it - not theirs. Disclosure - I am a Lockheed Martin retiree. Our pension plan is still underfunded

Well, Putin's second reaction to Finland and Sweden joining was essentially, "Meh. Big deal. They are peaceful countries and not a threat to us." Remember that? Yes, Russia did indeed make that statement. So why was Romania joining a problem? Or the Czechs? Or Hungary? Or Bulgaria? Are these warlike, threatening peoples? This is less about a fear of NATO (is a nation with 6000 nuclear warheads afraid of being invaded?) and more about Russia wanting to be "important" again. Putin and Lavrov continually complain about the dominance of western liberal democracy and the unfairness of a unipolar world.

# 10 - "...is a nation with 6000 nuclear warheads afraid of being invaded?" Yes, at least one is. In fact, I can name one that has been invaded by more than a million in the past two years. NATO had no reason to expand after 1991. Its "mission" was accomplished with the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact. The threat of Russia was so low that our NATO allies stacked arms. After 20 years of willful neglect, look at the German Bundeswehr as Exhibit A with its handful of battleworthy tanks, a military hardly able to strip its entire force to provide enough equipment when called to be the alliance's rapid response force. Today's Luftwaffe has few operational fighters. And yet they are reputed to be the best NATO can offer outside the US.

A record low number of U.S. adults report that they are “extremely proud to be American,” despite President Joe Biden’s promise to “restore the soul and to secure the future of America.” Thirty-eight percent say they are “extremely proud” to be an American, which is the lowest percentage since Gallup began tracking the trend in 2001. Still, 65 percent of adults polled say they are either “extremely” or “very” proud of the nation — 27 percent are “very proud,” and 22 percent are “moderately proud.” Nine percent are “only a little,” and 4 percent are “not at all proud.” “This record-low level of extreme national pride comes at a challenging time

The warning signs are all over the place that a second Joe Biden presidential run could spell disaster for the Democrats — not to mention the rest of the country. Polls have shown time and time again that Americans aren’t happy with what he’s doing to the country. It may be worse than anybody thought. A new Harvard CAPS-Harris poll came out Friday with blisteringly bad numbers for the Biden administration. The biggest takeaway from this poll is that a whopping 71% of those surveyed don’t want Joe Biden to make a second run at the Oval Office. Interestingly enough, 61%

It’s not (just) that his policies aren’t progressive enough. It’s the sense that he doesn’t “fight,” to borrow a term from righty populists. And when he does make a gesture towards fighting, like when he endorsed creating an exception to the filibuster for abortion rights, he’s destined to end up losing that fight. Meta has reduced its target for hiring engineers in 2022 to around 6,000-7,000, down from an initial plan to hire about 10,000 new engineers, Zuckerberg said. Washington — The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to take up an elections case brought by North Carolina Republicans that could diminish the power of state courts to order changes to rules for federal elections and the redrawing of congressional districts approved by state lawmakers. The dispute involves the "independent state legislature" theory, which was invoked by Chief Justice William Rehnquist's concurring opinion in Bush v. Gore and raised by former President Donald Trump and Republicans during the 2020 presidential election. Under the theory, the Constitution grants state legislatures the sole authority to regulate federal elections in their states, without oversight from state courts. The dispute stems from the redistricting process undertaken

Washington - The Supreme Court handed President Joe Biden a victory Thursday, ruling that he can shut down a Trump administration program designed to restrict immigration at the southern border. The court said the Biden administration acted properly in seeking to end the "Remain in Mexico" policy, formally known as the Migrant Protection Protocols. It required people seeking asylum at the southern border, mainly from Central America, to wait in Mexico while their claims were decided. From late January 2019 until Biden suspended the program, more than 68,000 people were shuttled back to Mexico. Tent cities sprang up near border entry stations on the Mexican side of the border.

The reality is that this nation has effectively split into two countries which are, for the moment, tenuously living side-by-side. Race or ethnicity has been the underlying foundation in the creation of every nation in the history of mankind except the United States, as its founding was based on the tenet that all men are created equal and are endowed with certain unalienable rights that government cannot abrogate.
