Nearly 4,000 lose power in Minnesota due
to squirrel

Utility officials in Minnesota said nearly 4,000 customers lost power for a time due to a squirrel that wandered into a substation. The Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative said the 7 a.m. Sunday outage in the Prior Lake area was caused by a squirrel that came into contact with substation equipment. The company said nearly 4,000 customers lost power for about a half hour. There was no word on the fate of the squirrel.

Comments:

One squirrel could knock out the power grid. Seems like we could easily be held hostage if everything is electric.

Geez...we occasionally have a squirrel knock out a transformer while frying itself, but it only takes out a block of homes and our utility has us back up in a couple of hours.

Pretty common stuff in the country side, although 4,000 is a bit bigger than usual. I've seen them do it twice in my life, once as a kid in suburban Virginia, and once in rural Kansas. Quickly repaired by the power company in each case, out of power for an hour or hour and a half, mostly detection and travel time. Just about 10 minutes to fix once on the scene. And the squirrel learns nothing from it.....instantly dead.

MSNBC finished May with its smallest monthly audience among the advertiser-coveted demographic of adults age 25-54 since November 1999, and its lowest-rated month among the demo in primetime since May 2004, as Rachel Maddow’s reduced schedule continues to harm the network. "Record-low ratings going back to 1999 is almost always a bad sign seeing as how they were then a fledgling network and far less ubiquitous in our bodypolitic," NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck told Fox News Digital about MSNBC, which launched in 1996. As the nation looks for ways to cut fossil fuel emissions to meet ambitious carbon reduction goals, natural gas, that common household fuel staple loved by cooks, is feeling the heat. So far, 77 cities and towns and Washington state have banned or discouraged new natural gas hookups. Los Angeles became the latest to join the list when its City Council voted last week to rewrite building codes requiring new homes and buildings achieve zero-carbon emissions – effectively eliminating future natural gas lines. Climate change experts say the shift is a necessary part of the nation's energy transformation. About half of

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. – Republicans in President Biden’s home state of Delaware held their convention on Saturday, sensing a renewed opportunity for electoral success in November as Democrats face trouble across the country and Biden’s approval ratings sag. Delaware Republicans held their state convention at the Rehoboth Convention Center, where Biden himself had spoken a day earlier in the same room to address May’s jobs report. He was still at his residence in the city when the convention was taking place, and Republican delegates and candidates took the opportunity to march by the convention center, and later toward the beach

The monkeypox virus, which has now been diagnosed in hundreds of people in 26 countries, may have been quietly circulating for years before its sudden emergence worldwide, some scientists speculate. Infectious disease experts and scientists at genetic labs are urgently looking for clues to explain why a virus that has been found in West Africa for half a century and typically doesn’t spread readily from person to person made such a dramatic and troubling appearance in the past month. “There may have been undetected transmission for a while,” said Dr. Rosamund Lewis, the World Health Organization’s technical lead for monkeypox

KILLINGWORTH, Conn. — As the financially struggling Boy Scouts sell off a number of campgrounds, conservationists, government officials and others are scrambling to find ways to preserve them as open space. A $2.6 billion proposed bankruptcy settlement designed to pay thousands of victims of child sexual abuse has added pressure to an organization beset by years of declining enrollment, and the Scouts and their local councils have been cashing in on their extensive holdings, including properties where some of the abuse took place. Developers have bought up some. Preservation groups hope others can be protected and some legislators have taken notice.

Walmart is pulling a popular brand of coconut milk off their shelves after reports of forced monkey labor. Walmart became the latest retail giant to drop Chaokoh coconut milk from its catalog. The mega-retailer pulled the beverage due to repeated allegations of monkey slave labor in its production. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) accused the Thai coconut milk supplier of using monkey slave laborers for harvest, which it claims are kept chained and improperly cared for. "The coconut trade uses social monkeys as chained-up coconut-picking machines, depriving them of any opportunity to eat, play, or spend time with their families," said Tracy Reiman, PETA's executive vice president.
