Two newspapers - one Swedish, the other Finnish - have reported the governments of Sweden and Finland have agreed to submit NATO applications at the same time and that it will happen in the middle of next month. Finnish newspaper Iltalehti said that the Swedish government has expressed a wish to Finland that they apply together in the week starting May 22 and Swedish government sources confirmed the information to Sweden's Expressen tabloid.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine has led to growing support in Sweden and Finland, a Russian neighbour, for joining NATO.

Putin is getting exactly the opposite of what he says he wants. Russian aircraft and subs have been intentionally entering Swedish air and ocean space for years, clearly trying to intimidate the Swedes. I haven't heard about Finland, but they have a significant border with Russia and have had several wars in the last century.
I'd be up for some less interesting times about now.

The Finns already spend 2 percent of their GDP on the military, which is in line with what NATO members are supposed to spend. They are training non-military militia for combat too. I wouldn't want to mess with Finland.

Skepticism about US involvement in NATO was but one reason why they ousted President Trump. Might as well start buying stocks in defense contractors right now because we'll be at war again soon enough.

We can't change history, but, what if Dollar Bill Clinton and his two Secretaries of State had made an effort to extend NATO with the agreement of Yeltsin? Yeltsin wanted to develop Russia, and might have been a good partner on specific projects.
Instead of doing those things, Clinton was focused on Monica's mouth, Warren Christopher was asleep at the wheel, and Albright was more interested in traveling the world and taking bows as the first girl Secretary of State.
Dollar Bill Clinton will be remembered as the President of missed opportunities.

Not just asking for trouble, but practically double-dog-daring it.

Mutually Assured Destruction is an effective nuclear deterrent between two countries. Between one man and a country... a man who will be assassinated if he fails... its not.

Sounds great for them. But both countries would be hard to defend from a Russian invasion. Putin's army may be depleted right now, but 7-8 years from now they could be ready to rumble again.

I know #12 is being facetious, and rightly so, but I think if NATO [and the west] survive the western left's all out war on us, at some time in the future we may all take a serious look at Russia joining NATO, after it's abysmal birth rate continues into the near future, after it's young men continue to be thinned out by stupid wars and especially after China takes advantage of it's weakness by making war on it, seizing in part all those raw materials in Siberia.
The west-east boundary runs along that border, and Russia is on our side of it.

Re#10. Russia is in a deep demographic decline, and will have fewer potential soldiers in a decade than now, not more. Russians are not making babies, and that is fatal.

Russia, with the 2nd most powerful military on earth can't defeat a country with a military on par with Canada. The US took on the world's 4th largest military and crushed it in 4 says.
Short of a nuclear exchange, Russia stands no chance against NATO.
