One year into his presidency, it seems like Joe Biden and the Democrats in Washington, D.C. have sent the country back in time to the late-1970s and early 80s, “when runaway inflation was hammering families, a violent crime wave was crashing our cities, and the Soviet army was trying to redraw the world map,” Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds said Tuesday night, in the official Republican response to Biden’s State of the Union address.

Honestly, even as a conservative, I expected more. Biden’s speech was badly written, devoid of memorable moments, and came across as a rehash of everything he’s been saying for the last two years. The applause lines felt painfully manufactured, and the president often stumbled over his words — and that’s when he wasn’t coughing.
The first part of the speech focused on Ukraine in an obvious attempt to soften the audience with a topic most agree on.
Sen. Joe Manchin III crossed the aisle during Tuesday’s State of the Union address.
Mr. Manchin, a moderate West Virginia Democrat, opted to sit on the side of the House chamber traditionally reserved for Republicans rather than with members of his party.
Mr. Manchin was seen sitting next to GOP Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Roger Wicker of Mississippi. He was the only Senate Democrat to sit with Republicans. Seating in the chamber was limited because of ongoing coronavirus restrictions.
Mr. Manchin’s office did not respond to requests for comment. The senator’s show of bipartisanship came amid tensions with his party and President Biden over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
It’s a pattern of bias: Whenever Democrats find themselves on the defensive politically over a divisive issue (transgender rights, mask mandates, school shutdowns, even inflation), the New York Times can be relied upon to ride to the party’s defense by flipping the issue, making the Republican Party seem like the unfair aggressor for pointing out and criticizing the controversial Democratic stance. Political reporter Jonathan Weisman complained about the GOP “weaponizing” in an analysis of campaign issues and Democratic prospects for the November elections Friday: “Vulnerable Democrats, Seeking Distance From the Left, Offer a Midterm Agenda.”
