President Joe Biden’s nominee to replace Justice Stephen Breyer on the Supreme Court, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, apparently refuses to use the term “illegal alien” in her court opinions, opting instead for “noncitizen.” In a handful of immigration-related cases that Jackson has ruled on U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, she has made a note to employ the term “noncitizen” or “undocumented non-citizens” rather than the terms “alien” or “illegal aliens” that are regularly used in court and in federal statutes.

The Emergencies Act is a law passed in 1988 that allows for widespread federal civil rights violations in the event of violent civil unrest, terrorism, and other emergencies. Waukesha parade massacre suspect Darrell Brooks has pled “not guilty” to killing six people and wounding dozens of others when he allegedly plowed an SUV through crowds of Christmas parade attendees in November of last year.
“We’d waive formal reading, and we can enter pleas of not guilty this morning,” Brooks’ defense attorney Jeremy Perri said last Friday.
