A library in Iraq looted and badly burned by Islamic State militants has re-opened. Fighters burnt at least 10,000 books at Mosul University during the IS takeover of the city in 2014. In all, around 85 per cent of the library’s collection was lost. Founded in 1921, it had previously been the second richest library in Iraq, after the Central Library in Baghdad. The refurbished building, which was reopened by the United Nations Development Programme, will initially house 32,000 books with a view to eventually rebuilding a million-strong collection. The two-storey Library is next to the bustling Student Centre and recently reopened Theatre Hall.

From the 18th of this month through the 25th, national leaders are meeting in Munich in an apparent effort to deescalate the situation in Ukraine. The administration has pulled together its putative allies to forestall what it claims is an imminent threat by Russia to invade Ukraine. In fact, it discouraged (apparently unsuccessfully) Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky from attending on the ground that war could start any minute and his absence from Ukraine would be taken as flight. Heading the U.S. delegation is Vice-President Kamala Harris, which hardly comforts me. She threatens severe economic sanctions against Russia if they invade. (But this is from the

Alec Baldwin may have fired the shot that killed “Rust” cinematographer Halyna Hutchins without pulling the gun’s trigger, a New Mexico prosecutor says. Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told Vanity Fair she had watched Alec Baldwin’s bombshell interview with ABC in December and was drawn to the actor’s claim that he did not pull the trigger. “You can pull the hammer back without actually pulling the trigger and without actually locking it,” Carmack-Altwies said. “So you pull it back partway, it doesn’t lock, and then if you let it go, the firing pin can hit the primer of the bullet.”

It has often been said that the Republican Party is the “party of old white men.” Indeed, when one looks at the party’s makeup, one can easily see why this moniker has persisted for so many decades. However, there are signs that times are a-changing, and the conservative movement is beginning to look a little different. Newsweek’s Steve Friess wrote an article titled “GOP Bets on Black Conservatives As Key to Victory: ‘We Change or We Die,’” in which he detailed the increasing prevalence of black conservatives running for office as Republicans. Ten years after its “autopsy” of Mitt Romney’s 2012 loss to Barack Obama

Things are escalating in Ottawa as the Freedom Convoy protesters continue to fight against Canada’s draconian COVID-19 measures. But while the focus started on the message, it is now firmly on the behavior of the Ottawa Police Department. As RedState has chronicled, numerous videos of mistreatment and violence perpetrated by police on peaceful protesters have emerged. Perhaps the most stunning example was the trampling of a disabled woman by officers on horseback. In response, the police lied, claiming a bike had been thrown at the horses. That was quickly debunked, showing how valuable it is that people are videoing what’s happening. On Saturday, Ottawa’s chief of police gave a press conference

One of the most challenging obstacles working against ordinary citizens in the West is the self-satisfying presumption that Western institutions and philosophies are inherently immune from the rise of totalitarianism. (snip) The growing tyranny in the West has not happened overnight. (snip) Western governments are terrified of their people today. They are terrified of what their people believe, or else they wouldn't feel compelled to criminalize thoughts as "hateful." They are scared to death of what their people might say to each other, or else they wouldn't engage in mass surveillance and blatant censorship.

My kind of town, Chicago was. With apologies to Frank Sinatra.I grew up in the upper west corner of Indiana on the Illinois state line, close to Lake Michigan. For all intents and purposes, part of Greater Chicagoland. My high school — then college — buds and I ran all over the city, from the Southside and Greektown to the Northside and Wrigleyville to Lakeshore Drive and the Navy Pier. There was nowhere we were afraid to go, nor did the thought ever cross our minds. My, how those days — and the Windy City— have changed. In this case, we’re not even talking about the bloody streets of the Southside

One of the enduring mysteries of the Trump era - 'who is Q' - appears to be solved, sort of.Two sets of forensic linguists have published two separate papers using two different techniques to conclude that Q appears to be two people: South African tech journalist Paul Furber, 55, and 4chan internet message board moderator and computer entrepreneur Ron Watkins, 34, according to the studies. 'While relying on two completely different technologies, both stylometric [quantitative study of literary style] analyses could establish that QAnon's early period on the 4chan forum, from October to December 2017, was likely the result of a collaboration between Paul Furber and Ron Watkins,

"Real Time" host Bill Maher closed his show Friday night by taking aim at American celebrities who he claimed "kowtow" to China. Maher kicked off the monologue by skewering Eileen Gu, the 18-year-old American-born Olympic gold medal skier who made headlines when she announced she was competing for China, her mother's homeland. "Is that cool now, to choose to represent a totalitarian police state over America?" Maher asked. "The Olympics pretends to only be about sports but of course, the games have always been a bit of a proxy war for which country has the best system. And by choosing Team China, Eileen Gu became a living symbol

Unless the goal is to receive backslaps from a sycophantic mainstream media, it’s not a good time to be a Democrat. Things have collapsed in ways that didn’t seem possible over the last six months. Sure, it was expected that the party in power would see some regression, but at this level? Inflation continues to be a top concern among Americans, with January’s number clocking in at another multi-decade high. People are seeing their buying power eroded, and with gas prices set to explode further over the next year, there is no relief in sight. Meanwhile, Russia is on the verge of starting a major war in Europe, Afghanistan
