A library in Iraq looted and badly burned by Islamic State militants has re-opened. Fighters burnt at least 10,000 books at Mosul University during the IS takeover of the city in 2014. In all, around 85 per cent of the library’s collection was lost. Founded in 1921, it had previously been the second richest library in Iraq, after the Central Library in Baghdad. The refurbished building, which was reopened by the United Nations Development Programme, will initially house 32,000 books with a view to eventually rebuilding a million-strong collection. The two-storey Library is next to the bustling Student Centre and recently reopened Theatre Hall.

A woman was killed and five others wounded in a shooting Saturday night at a Portland park where people had gathered to protest the police shooting of Amir Locke. To simplify, let’s first identify and categorize two classes of people in society, who we could say tend to navigate and interact with the world in fundamentally different ways.
The first is a class that has been a part of human civilization for a really long time. These are the people who work primarily in the real, physical world.
The second class is different. It is, relatively speaking, a new civilizational innovation. They don’t interact much with the physical world directly; they are handlers of knowledge.
This is really a remarkable admission from MSNBC reporter Alex Seitz-Wald, who gave a grim assessment of the Democrats’ challenge in lifting COVID-19 restrictions across the board and returning the United States to some sense of “normal.”
A recent poll showed a whopping 65% of Democrats who believe it “too early to rescind mask mandates” as opposed to just 20% of Republicans who think that way.

A man accused of shooting a delivery driver during a fight over parking turned himself in to Philadelphia police Friday morning, a source with direct knowledge of the investigation told NBC10's Deanna Durante.
The man is accused of pulling out a gun and firing after getting into a fistfight with a delivery driver who was making a pick-up Thursday afternoon at 17th and Chestnut streets in Rittenhouse Square, one of the city’s most popular and busiest shopping districts.
A witness told said that the driver was double-parked and blocking a couple in another car.
