Darrell Brooks' attorneys seek a change
of venue and file not guilty pleas in
the Waukesha Christmas Parade tragedy case

Darrell Brooks Jr. on Friday pleaded not guilty to 77 charges, including six homicide counts, tied to the Waukesha Christmas Parade tragedy, but what exactly his defense team has in mind became clearer one day earlier. In separate motions Thursday, defense attorney Jeremy Perri filed two key requests on behalf of the 39-year-old Milwaukee man, including a change of venue request that was not immediately discussed.

Comments:

Let the legal wrangling begin. This has nothing to do with determining his guilt or innocence. Gosh, imagine that the community drew together to support the victims and families. This all has nothing to do with justice. Next they will demand the SUV that reportedly did the killing also stand trial.

Tornakos are tragedies. Intentional murder by a moving vehicle is not a tragedy. It is cold-blooded murder.

This is a response to an opinion piece by Janan Najeeb that mistakenly characterized the Latinx struggle for fair maps and equal representation in Milwaukee as a threat to Muslim voting rights or representation ("Milwaukee's Muslims simply want to be fairly represented by the Common Council," Jan. 30). The struggle for the freedom of communities of color to have a fair and equal voice in our city can never be won if we allow ourselves to be manipulated by politicians who use the tactic of divide and conquer to pit one oppressed group against another.

If U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson made a New Year's resolution to take a more measured approach when discussing public policy, it didn't take him long to break it. Because the state's most polarizing politician is already back to offering his often wild and controversial take on things in 2022. Johnson — who last year advised using mouthwash to combat COVID-19 and labeled Social Security a Ponzi scheme — has already roped God into his bizarre take on vaccines and again questioned the seriousness of last year's Capitol riot. Now he's taking on a new topic: out-of-wedlock births.CORRECTION*

More Milwaukee restaurants have begun requiring proof of vaccination from dine-in customers, saying it's necessary for the safety of staff and patrons and to keep their businesses operating. "It’s not meant to be punitive; it’s meant to be protective," in the way cutting off a customer from drinking is, said Melissa Buchholz, co-owner of Odd Duck, 2352 S. Kinnickinnic Ave. The restaurant this week announced on social media that it would require proof of vaccination — a vaccination card, a photo of the card or the online vaccine record filed with the state — along with photo ID.

The U.S. Army unveiled a plan this week to tackle issues surrounding climate change, including the establishment of an electric vehicle fleet, as well as the reduction of the branch's greenhouse gas emissions. The plan, outlined by the Army in a document titled "Climate Strategy," calls for the service to cut its emissions by 50% by 2030 from 2005 levels and reach net-zero emissions by 2050. The strategy aims to establish an "all-electric light-duty non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2027" and an "all-electric non-tactical vehicle fleet by 2035." "There are 950 renewable energy projects supplying 480 megawatts of power to the Army today … scoped and planned through 2024," the Army strategy stated.
