Homeless encampments in Austin, Texas, were legalized in 2021, but the people of this fast-growing tech mecca have had second and third thoughts about what looked like a good idea on paper but turned out to be an eyesore under bridges.
Austin politicos have just finished removing virtually all remaining visible homeless camps. Other cities are taking notice.
The journey to this current outcome was far from a straight path.
Put bluntly, it was a dizzying display of waffling “wokeness.” In 2019, the city council of Austin had the bright idea to legalize homeless camps. Unfortunately, they took the vote in the middle of the night -- 2:00 am to be exact

I wonder if UT is experiencing any loss of students applying to come to live in this arm pit of the state?

I remember when there weren't 'homeless' in Austin. There were 'street people.' We thought of them kind of like Peter Pan's lost boys with drugs.

When politicians are held personally responsible for the damage they cause, then things might change. For example, if crime rises as a direct result of police defunding, then politician's personal property should be made subject to liens or even confiscation to account for the trouble caused to the public. Do this and the scum would be cleaned out of city hall.

Love me some Texas (not an easy thing for an Okie to admit) and feel totally at home and comfortable with Texans but could care less about Austin. It deserves what it's getting cause stupid people keep electing snakes.

What is truly amazing is the illiteracy of the democratic voter. Either the elections are rigged or these people are as insane as they appear to be. Their cities are being destroyed and their quality of life is a disaster. They have crime and these homeless squatters who are totally useless doing drugs and living off the taxpayers dime. Do they not see what has happened to California, NYC and other areas where the homeless have taken over. Total freakin morons.

When Texas returns to its righteous position of a full blown government and nation we will return the capital city to Galveston. The people's Republic of Austin is no place to be.
Even 6th street sucks these days.

There are California spaces in Texas. They are all cities, and Austin because it's the state capitol is the worst. Leftists always flock to where the political power resides.

Austin thinks again?
What a misleading headline. Those liberal loons in Austin never thought a first time.
As my wife likes to say, we need a border fence in Texas. Around our northern, eastern, and western borders. I add a cattle guard around Austin to keep the liberals more-or-less corralled in one place.

Poster #3, I'm old enough to remember that before they were called 'homeless' or 'street people' they were called bums.

"Build it and they will come."
#6, I live in Texas and the answer to you is "these people are as insane as they appear to be."* They cannot understand how the above statement plays out in the real world.
*Full disclosure, one of them is my Austin resident ex-husband; he's on anti-anxiety medicine now, my children tell me.

Most homeless are reportedly drug and alcohol abusers and huge numbers are mentally ill, some are even violent. These people need to be away from public spaces, and if mentally ill, they need to be in some sort of mental institutions if they cannot care for themselves. And they especially need to be off of the streets if they have violent tendencies.

All part of their attempt to make it look like they're not for the position they were originally so excited to support.
It looks like democrats are trying to fool people just long enough by removing the homeless in this instance, so they will vote for them in November.
Once again, they thought by making it legal to be homeless, they were being sensitive, accommodating and solving a problem. However, it didn't solve anything which is typical of democrat schemes.
