New York City is banning natural gas hookups
for new buildings to fight climate change

The New York City Council on Wednesday voted to pass legislation banning the use of natural gas in most new construction, a move that will substantially slash climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions from the country’s most populous city. (Snip) Under the law, construction projects submitted for approval after 2027 must use sources like electricity for stoves, space heaters and water boilers instead of gas or oil. Residents who currently have gas stoves and heaters in their homes will not be impacted unless they relocate to a new building. New York state was the sixth largest natural gas consumer in the country

This is insane. All-electric utilities will cost a fortune.

Are they also mandating the building of new power plants to generate the electricity to power all these new appliances and electric cars? They forget that most power in this country is generated by fossil fuels - natural gas and coal. Hydropower, solar, wind, nuclear and biomass generate only a small percentage of our power needs. Our politicians are idiots.

Wait until the first big hurricane, blackout, ice storm, or other power grid disruption and see how wonderful the all electric buildings and electric car thing is then. I can picture some foreign hackers cutting off the NYC electric power grid during a blizzard and holding the city for ransom. Only old gas and oil heated buildings will have any heat. All those electric cars and snowplows won't be able to be recharged so no snow clean-up. Every city dweller will be trapped inside, freezing wondering why this is happening to them.

Fine!! Do it! Do it! in fact turn off ALL current gas lines/hook ups/pipelines... Then when the "Real" insurrection starts and we rascally deplorables take down the powerlines into the City, ALL of your "Constituents" can freeze in the dark until they deliver your HEADS across the bridges we have blocked in/out of the city. We of course, as "Gentlemen", would NEVER do anything sooo violent, but your restive, savage, "subjects" most certainly will.

FTA: "a move that will substantially slash climate-changing greenhouse gas emissions from the country’s most populous city." So instead of burning gas to cook food and heat living space, the electric utility will have to burn gas to create heat, which then drives turbines to convert heat into motion, generators convert the motion into electricity. It goes out over the grid where there is voltage drop over the transmission lines, it goes thru transformers to step down to 240v for the home, then the stove and furnace convert the electricity back into heat. And everyone who went to middle school before they became woke learns that every time energy is converted from one form to another there are losses, nothing is 100% efficient. Uh, like science and stuff.

Decisions again being made by people with a political agenda and no clue whatsoever. The electric companies are heartily endorsing this ridiculous plan for obvious reasons. Utilities in NYC will end up costing as much as rent. It is impossible to feel sorry for people who go to the polls and request these people to rule them.

Evil people in charge, and they do evil things. Natural gas heating is as near to 100% efficiency that you will ever get in this life. If you have the old fashioned blue flame wall heaters....pretty much 100% of the energy heats your home. If you have a furnace system, the newest and most efficient models are about 96% efficient, wasting just 4% of the energy in the gas. OTOH....run that into a central power station...and you get 35-40% of the energy in the gas out as electrical energy....the rest is wasted. So, direct nat gas heating is the best possible use for the gas. But these climate crazies are too dim and propagandized to listen to facts.

And they're doing it without any credible science that demonstrates a link between anthropogenic CO2 emissions and global warming. Until they explain the several dozen ice ages in the past, they have no credible argument...period. Only consider...these are the same nimwits that are mandating the public be forced to take an experimental drug which has not passed standard double-blind studies, that doesn't prevent infection or transmission, but does cause serious and life threatening side effects, to treat a pandemic that was never a pandemic in the first place, and one for which cheap, effective, and safe therapeutics are proven to work and are readily available. These people are beyond idiotic...they've gone insane in what history will show to be mass psychosis on a national scale.

Hey New Yawk. Back in the day in Nova Scotia they didn't have to ban gas. There was none. Do what we did. Run electric heat and keep a good hot wood stove in the basement. If you're in a apartment on the 23rd floor keep a REALLY hot wood stove in the basement. Only about 4 cords of firewood each winter.

Wait! They won't need any heat...because of global warming. But the thing about space heaters...it's not that they start any fires or or trip your breakers or anything like that. I remember during the dark and cold Carter years in Minnesota. During the winter people died because they were burning kerosene indoors. It's all good. No worries.😖

Hah. A few miles from my house is a power generating plant. A friend of mine was the gm and opened if years ago. Got four generating units. Three run on natural gas and the fourth on the steam from the three natural gas generators. Why did they build it here? Well, there are three major natural gas pipelines that run within miles of the plant. One of the things they did in building the plant was hook up to all three lines. That way, they buy the gas from who ever gives them the cheapest price. Reminds me of the picture of the electric car charging unit. Powered by a diesel generator.
