Keyzoe Williams, of Chicago, has been charged with one count of illegal possession of a machine gun.
According to an indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court Friday, Williams was in possession of a handgun equipped with a conversion device — also known as an "auto sear" or "Glock switch."

There are probably dozens of those on the streets in Chicago. Why was this one special?

Automatic or not, they still can't hit the side of a barn.

Fortunately, these conversions are very nearly useless for anything other than a gunfight at extremely short range, like inside a phone booth. Fools like this are dangerous, yes, but the weapon is dramatically less useful than it was before the conversion.
The cyclic rate on semi-auto handguns, when converted to fully automatic, is so high that a full 17 round magazine is emptied in one tenth of a second or so. It is usually impossible to avoid firing the entire magazine on a single trigger pull, even with practice. The very few times that legitimate gun companies have manufactured this sort of 'machine pistols' for military testing, they have been forced to put three round burst mechanisms on them because every trigger pull resulted in an instantly empty gun, and most rounds going wildly too high due to recoil. Any test shows quickly that they are pretty nearly useless.
The most prominent example was the HK VP-70, which even offered a shoulder stock attached, in a vain effort to make it into something even remotely useful. Few were sold. Even with a three round burst internal limiter, and an 18 round magazine, it is empty with six trigger pulls, with most of the bullets going well off the target. They didn't sell well to police or military. A good man with a six shot revolver is probably more dangerous.
This is the foolish toy of an idiot, completely aside of the fact that he'll spend a decade in prison for this.

A "machine gun" is a long gun, a rifle, something that may be mounted onto support.
An "assault rifle" is a smaller type of machine gun meant for easy carry, still a rifle.
A "sub-machine gun" is not a rifle, like an Uzi, Tommy gun, MP5, etc.
A full auto handgun is a worthless, dangerous noisemaker. Maybe a sub-machine gun, but not really. To me it is a badge of idiocy, to have one or to call it a "machine gun".

This will surely cut down on the shootings by the same number that this guy shot which I bet is zero. Mean while how many will die this weekend from the real criminals that the DA will never charge?

This certainly explains the high number of innocent bystanders taking on lead in Chicago and elsewhere. This gun is about as accurate as throwing a box of ammo on a bonfire.

Nothing to see here. Keyzoe was innocently walking around with his usual nonviolent little gadget.

Re #9. I had the opportunity to fire the semi-auto VP-70 in the middle 80s at a Bianchi Cup match, in Columbia. As you say, the trigger is, while perfectly linear, extremely heavy, long and vague. I didn't, at that time, understand that it has been designed as a machine pistol, and couldn't grasp why someone would make a pistol with such an outstandingly horrid trigger.
Years later, watching a demo video of the Machine Pistol version, I at least understood the concept, as much as it ever made sense. And it harkens back to an early German design, a equally useless late WW2 attempt to make an ultra cheap last ditch full auto handgun for arming the Volkssturm. An almost non-existent and useless pistol is a perfect fit for the almost non-existent and useless Volkssturm, one last gasp of the dying Third Reich.

Like firing a Broomhandle Mauser as a handgun, by not using its stock.
It can be done, but the only positive result is an instructional lesson - don't do that.
