Keyzoe Williams, of Chicago, has been charged with one count of illegal possession of a machine gun. According to an indictment unsealed in U.S. District Court Friday, Williams was in possession of a handgun equipped with a conversion device — also known as an "auto sear" or "Glock switch."

Fortunately, these conversions are very nearly useless for anything other than a gunfight at extremely short range, like inside a phone booth. Fools like this are dangerous, yes, but the weapon is dramatically less useful than it was before the conversion. The cyclic rate on semi-auto handguns, when converted to fully automatic, is so high that a full 17 round magazine is emptied in one tenth of a second or so. It is usually impossible to avoid firing the entire magazine on a single trigger pull, even with practice. The very few times that legitimate gun companies have manufactured this sort of 'machine pistols' for military testing, they have been forced to put three round burst mechanisms on them because every trigger pull resulted in an instantly empty gun, and most rounds going wildly too high due to recoil. Any test shows quickly that they are pretty nearly useless. The most prominent example was the HK VP-70, which even offered a shoulder stock attached, in a vain effort to make it into something even remotely useful. Few were sold. Even with a three round burst internal limiter, and an 18 round magazine, it is empty with six trigger pulls, with most of the bullets going well off the target. They didn't sell well to police or military. A good man with a six shot revolver is probably more dangerous. This is the foolish toy of an idiot, completely aside of the fact that he'll spend a decade in prison for this.

A "machine gun" is a long gun, a rifle, something that may be mounted onto support. An "assault rifle" is a smaller type of machine gun meant for easy carry, still a rifle. A "sub-machine gun" is not a rifle, like an Uzi, Tommy gun, MP5, etc. A full auto handgun is a worthless, dangerous noisemaker. Maybe a sub-machine gun, but not really. To me it is a badge of idiocy, to have one or to call it a "machine gun".

Re #9. I had the opportunity to fire the semi-auto VP-70 in the middle 80s at a Bianchi Cup match, in Columbia. As you say, the trigger is, while perfectly linear, extremely heavy, long and vague. I didn't, at that time, understand that it has been designed as a machine pistol, and couldn't grasp why someone would make a pistol with such an outstandingly horrid trigger. Years later, watching a demo video of the Machine Pistol version, I at least understood the concept, as much as it ever made sense. And it harkens back to an early German design, a equally useless late WW2 attempt to make an ultra cheap last ditch full auto handgun for arming the Volkssturm. An almost non-existent and useless pistol is a perfect fit for the almost non-existent and useless Volkssturm, one last gasp of the dying Third Reich.

Like firing a Broomhandle Mauser as a handgun, by not using its stock. It can be done, but the only positive result is an instructional lesson - don't do that.

There was not a bit of sugarcoating, Sunday, from ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos on a brand new poll from ABC and the Washington Post. “This poll is just brutal for President Biden!” Stephanopoulos said. Indeed, the silver linings were just about impossible to find for the White House. The poll put Biden’s approval rating at 36 percent — down 6 points from February and an all-time low in that particular survey. The survey also showed Biden getting trounced in a hypothetical 2024 matchup with former President Donald Trump, 45-38.

The Biden administration has, at long last, finally decided to follow the law — only just a bit. And it really doesn't want people to know about it either way, which is why the announcement was made on Good Friday afternoon. After refusing to comply with a court order requiring him to sell leases for oil and gas exploration on federal land last year, Biden is finally succumbing to the pressure of high gas prices. That's the good news. The bad news is that he is selling a mere fraction of the leases the government would normally sell. This probably belongs in the category of "better than nothing."

An archbishop in the Church of England said the opening of the “Lord’s Prayer” is considered “problematic” to some people because the 2,000-year-old prayer starts by addressing God as “Our Father.” Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell told the General Synod, the legislating and ruling body of the Church of England, that referring to God as “father” might be offensive to some people because of the negative connotations of patriarchy. “I know the word ‘father’ is problematic for those whose experience of earthly fathers has been destructive and abusive, and for all of us who have labored rather too much from an oppressively patriarchal grip on life,” Cottrell said,

One track of his predicament stems from general public unhappiness with his performance.

Major legal rulings that dismantled the use of race in college admissions, undermined protections for LGBTQ people and tossed out President Joe Biden’s student debt relief program marked the end of a Supreme Court term in which the conservative supermajority continued to exert its dominance. The majority also doubled down on a controversial legal theory that limits the power of federal agencies to take unilateral action. Meanwhile, the justices rejected a far-fetched argument that would have limited the role of state courts in election disputes and turned away an aggressive attempt to challenge Biden administration immigration policy – both areas in which lawyers on the right might have overreached in their arguments.
