It’s a frustrating thing about wars: In addition to death, destruction and displacement, there’s also disruption to your European vacation plans. At least that’s how Joy Behar of "The View" saw things Thursday. The show’s panelists were discussing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine when Behar said she feared yet another missed travel opportunity after two years of the coronavirus pandemic.

For the love of all that is decent... please cancel this stoopid show.

This story reminds me of a scene from the movie am “About a Boy” where Hugh Grant’s character’s sister says to him, “Really, Will. You can’t possibly be so shallow” and Grants squints his eyes, looks bewildered and then turns to her with a faint smile and says, “You see, you really have always got that wrong. I really am this shallow.”

Joy Behar’s “slightly” self-absorbed comment about her disrupted vacation plans reminds me of something that the smug and condescending radical attorney Ron Kuby used to say to callers on WABC radio in NYC. Kuby would routinely refer to conservative callers, who criticized the violent crime and filth in New York as hypocrites, who lived in “Outer White-Landia,” a reference to Long Island, Westchester County, Connecticut and northern New Jersey. However, when Ron Kuby would take his family on vacation, he would bask in the sun in tony, upscale and 99.9% European-American Long Beach Island, hobnobbing with such celebrities as the late James Gandolfini and Oprah Winfrey. You would think that Ron Kuby, being the late, unlamented William Kuntsler’s protege, would vacation in Bedford Stuyvesant or Lakewood, NJ being a “man of the people.” But, no, Ron Kuby is as big a phony and hypocrite as Joy Behar and the holier-than-thou Obamas of Martha’s Vineyard.

“Operation Washout 2.0,” a law enforcement operation involving multiple agencies in Central Texas, resulted in the arrest of 250 individuals, including felons and gang members, and the seizure of weapons and narcotics, authorities announced Wednesday. “Most these individuals were not your typical ‘outstanding citizens,’” said Robert Garmon, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal. Funded and led by the U.S. Marhals Service, the operation focused on countering gang activity in specific areas of McLennan, Bell and Coryell counties. “This is what our citizens expect us to do is come together, put egos, attitudes, put all that away and come together and make our community safe,” said Todd Snyder, DPS Central Texas Regional Director.

What possesses a person to travel to another country for a luxury vacation only to complain it doesn’t mimic the dystopian hellscape they came from? I wouldn’t know, but perhaps Josh Freed, a writer for the Montreal Gazette, can offer some insight. Pooja Makhijani has written a piece for the New York Times about menstruation. Here are a few suggested edits for Makhijani’s piece, free of charge: First, the sub-head: “Young people want alternatives to disposable tampons and pads — and they’re not embarrassed to talk about it.” Are “young people” looking for alternatives to disposable menstrual products, or are young women? (Surely the latter since only women menstruate.) “Still, the average menstruator can use thousands of tampons in their lifetime.” “Menstruator”? Excuse me, but the word is woman. (Also, “their” should be her.)

When President Biden pounded his hand on a podium this week and declared “I'm tired of being quiet!” when he talked about changing Senate rules to pass voters rights legislation, Democrats immediately noticed a shift. In five words, Biden — known for working across the aisle and his relationships with Republicans —was telegraphing that the new year was ushering in a more forceful and liberated version of himself. “It’s about damn time,” said one top Democratic strategist. “It’s like they kept him on a leash for far too long. No one elected restrained Joe Biden. We elected real Joe Biden.”

Just over a year ago, millions of energized young people, women, voters of color and independents joined forces to send Joe Biden to the White House. But 12 months into his presidency, many describe a coalition in crisis. Leading voices across Biden’s diverse political base openly decry the slow pace of progress on key campaign promises. The frustration was especially pronounced this past week after Biden’s push for voting rights legislation effectively stalled, intensifying concerns in his party that fundamental democratic principles are at risk and reinforcing a broader sense that the president is faltering at a moment of historic consequence.

After the Omicron variant began spreading through the United States just before the holidays, President Biden unleashed what he described as a sweeping effort to bolster the country's defenses. He pledged reinforcements for overwhelmed hospitals, more home tests to screen for infections and new investments in vaccine access. But little seems to be slowing Omicron's spread, despite Biden's insistence that he's "confident we are on the right track" as the pandemic enters its third year. Although vaccines are preventing what could have otherwise been a devastating death toll, hospitals are being pushed to their limits. Meanwhile, Americans are frustrated with confusing public health guidance...

In recent years, a number of parents and grandparents have discovered an alarming trend: children no longer know how to write in cursive. Such a discovery led to a considerable backlash against programs such as Common Core, which many viewed as the culprit squeezing out cursive instruction. Thanks to increased attention on the subject, many states have implemented laws mandating that cursive be taught in school. But what happens when children begin to learn cursive and can’t hold their pencil properly? Amazingly, this is the growing reality in a number of countries. The Guardian explains:

Ukraine appears to be feeling some of that frustration that we have felt with Joe Biden with his general failure to be effective on virtually anything. Ukraine is under huge assault from Russia, with a convoy bearing down on the capital city of Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he hoped that Joe Biden could say something “useful.” But Ukrainian Member of Parliament Oleksandra Ustinova said this morning on NBC’s “Today” that Biden’s speech was “a total disappointment. Today, the whole world is watching Ukrainians being executed. I cannot name it the other way around.”
