Officials issued a blizzard warning for Hawaii, forecasting that at least 12 inches of snow will fall over the weekend. “The warning is in effect for the Big Island summits from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Sunday local time,” ABC News reported Friday. Meanwhile, wind gusts reaching more than 100 miles per hour were also expected, the alert from the National Weather Service Honolulu said. “Travel could be very difficult to impossible,” the post read. “Blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility at times, with periods of zero visibility.” “The strong winds will likely cause significant drifting of snow,” it continued. The National Weather Service on Saturday noted winter weather conditions

I've never been to Hawaii so I didn't know that their mountains were so high. So they have ski resorts?

It's those windmills. If you extract that much energy from the air flow patterns there are consequences. One of which is a craving by weather forecasters talking about "snow", which in this case they are probably talking about powdery white stuff suitable for sniffing.

OP, this is on the Big Island, i.e., the main island of the chain, it's not Oahu. As the article says, the mountains on the big islands can get up to 14,000 feet. Even on Oahu though, if you drive from Honolulu to the north side of the island (the Punahou highway IIRC) you go up a mountain range and when you get near the top you are turning on the heater in the car because of the temperature drop. It's all about elevation.

Poster 1, the article said that the storm would be accompanied by winds up to 100 mph. It's the combination of snow and wind that make a blizzard.

http://www.hawaiiinfoguide.com/hawaii_skiing.htm Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for 'white mountain') is a 13,796' (4205 meter) volcanic mountain whose summit sometimes gets a skiable/boardable mantle of snow. There are no lifts, no grooming, no resort, but a road goes to the summit to serve the dozen or so world class observatories located at the summit. You must have a 4-wheel drive vehicle to get to the summit, which serves as your "lift." Basically, skiers take turns being the driver, who picks up the other skiers at the bottom of the runs and ferries them up to the summit. Conditions at the top are extremely variable. Winter temperatures range from 25 to 40 degrees F (-4 to 4 C), but wind chill and the high altitude can make it seem much colder. Between April and November the weather is milder, with daytime temperatures varying from 30 to 60 degrees F (0 to 15 C).

Summits of high mountains. The volcanoes are just a touch less than 14,000 feet tall. Even in the summer it is cold at those altitudes. Not particularly unusual, it snows on those peaks about once a year on the average.

A New Contract with America 12 replies

There is no better time for the GOP to craft a new Contract with America to drive the campaigns for both the 2022 midterms and 2024 Presidential election year. That's right, it should focus their campaign strategy for the next three years. Why? Even if there is an overwhelming GOP landslide next November, the chances of having a big enough swing to be able overcome a Biden veto is unlikely. No matter what Republican candidates promise; it will be hard to meet expectations until we have a president in office who will support their agenda. Even with that limitation, it is vital to proceed and clarify what we stand for. It isn't just the candidates conservatives need to elect;

This is what you’re going to see for some time.” The report by The Hill is titled, “Trump haunts Biden vaccine mandate in courts.”
