Coal, a pariah fuel for climate activists, has made a quiet comeback this year in the post-lockdown economic resurgence. Coal stockpiles at power plants are getting so low that the regional electric grid operator, PJM Interconnection, has taken steps to prevent a system collapse this winter similar to Texas earlier this year. PJM, based near Valley Forge, this month imposed new rules on power plants in 13 states and the District of Columbia to make sure electricity generators do not run short of fuel during a cold snap. The rules could force some coal generators to curtail operations to build

Comments:

Since coal production has been discouraged, there is a lot less on hand. A prolonged cold snap could spell serious trouble for the energy grid.

No, it hasn't. There are just far less generators running it these days so there are less mines digging it out of the ground. NG prices are three times what they were just last year, thanks to Xiden putting domestic oil exploration out of business. Prices are so high that my electric company sent me a letter today suggesting that I cancel Power Smart Pricing for at least the next year. PSP charges real time based on market rate. I have saved a lot of money over the last decade with it, but this year I am in the red for the first time ever.

We used to live on the BNSF rail lines and every day there would be coal cars moving. I have heard that there aren't so many any more. Shall we say the law of unintended consequences ?

Coal should be supplying about 50-60% of our electrical power, with the rest coming from nuclear.

Plaster the whole country with windmills and solar panels but keep the rich folks away from it all. That's the ticket. Meanwhile, back at the farm, the entire northern USA will freeze.

I would second #4, except these seem like precisely the consequences that were intended. Remember how Zippy glibly declared in 2008 that he intended to use price pressures to drive oil and coal out of business?

A lot of people are asking whether President Joe Biden dozed off during the climate change conference he’s attending in Scotland after a Washington Post reporter released a video that appears to indicate as much. (Snip) The video shows Biden repeatedly closing his eyes, though he has them open when an aide came up to him, and he clapped when the speech concluded. Whatever was happening in the clip, Biden went on to give a speech later where he urged world leaders to take action on climate change. Nonetheless, the video’s there and people still derisively call the president “Sleepy

A 24-hour San Francisco grocery store will now be closing early due to excessive thefts at night, joining other retailers that have been forced to alter their hours due to rampant stealing. The Safeway grocery in the Castro neighborhood of San Francisco has moved from operating 24 hours a day to closing from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., KPIX reported. (Snip) This decision by the Castro Safeway comes less than a month after pharmacy retail giant Walgreens announced it would be closing some locations in San Francisco due to organized retail theft. It's Halloween on Sunday. Despite the warnings of perennially unhappy social justice activists, please wear whatever costume inspires you. The holiday isn't racist—and, no, there's no "cultural appropriation" in your costume choice. Cultural appropriation must be dismissed as an extreme and segregationist perspective that will continue to divide this country. (Snip) Under the complaint of cultural appropriation, left-wing activists have declared anything tied to a culture borne out of people of color to be inherently offensive. It's not part of your culture, so it is culturally insensitive for you to don the costume. It's not meant for you. Each

The Virginia governor’s race is in full swing Saturday with just three days left until Election Day, but the small crowd that greeted Democratic candidate Terry McAuliffe could be a premonition of what’s to come. At an event supported by Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., in Norfolk, the former governor was greeted by a crowd of roughly 40 people. Despite the small crowd size, McAuliffe championed the number of early voters who have already cast their ballots in the tightly contested race. "As of this morning we have had over a million early votes," the Democratic candidate told his supporters, adding

HELENA, Mont. — Montana has become the latest state to stop making license plates because of disruption in the U.S. aluminum supply — another example of supply chain problems caused by the pandemic. Montana Correctional Enterprises, which makes the plates at the state prison, ran out of aluminum last week, said Carolynn Bright, spokesperson for the Montana Department of Corrections. Another shipment of aluminum isn’t expected until December, officials said. “We knew this might be a possibility because it’s been an issue at other license plate factories throughout the nation,” said Gayle Butler, administrator of Montana Correctional Enterprises, a division

Former Vice President Al Gore called on the world to "say goodbye to coal, oil and gas" to fight climate change in a video released Friday ahead of the upcoming UN COP 26 global warming conference. Oil, gas and coal are the source of 79% of U.S. energy consumption, according to the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Nuclear energy provides 9% of U.S. energy, while renewable energy accounts for 12%. Gore called on public and private sector leaders to "get real" about immediately reducing greenhouse gas emissions and about moving away from fossil fuels to "clean" energy.

This week, the president took a trip to Virginia to try to help salvage the gubernatorial prospects of fellow Washington lifer Terry McAuliffe. Even in this white-hot partisan moment, the Senate is a pretty genteel place. Senators view themselves as part of a very elite club -- and tend to treat fellow members with kid gloves. NEW YORK — Health officials on Friday offered more evidence that vaccinations offer better protection against COVID-19 than immunity from a prior infection. Unvaccinated people who had been infected months earlier were 5 times more likely to get COVID-19 than fully vaccinated people who didn’t have a prior infection, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded in a new study. “These data show, pretty strongly, that the vaccines are more protective against symptomatic COVID,” said Dr. Mike Saag, an infectious disease expert at the University of Alabama.
