How Facebook shapes your feed

Facebook’s news feed algorithm has been blamed for fanning sectarian hatred, steering users toward extremism and conspiracy theories, and incentivizing politicians to take more divisive stands. It’s in the spotlight thanks to waves of revelations from the Facebook Papers and testimony from whistleblower Frances Haugen, who argues it’s at the core of the company’s problems. But how exactly does it work, and what makes it so influential?

We still have facebook because we use it to communicate with a few old friends and to see pictures of our Grand Children. I have seen that Facebook has been sending a constant stream of left-wing sites to our news feed for the last few months. Many of them say that the poster is based outside of the US. I always set them to never show in my news feed but many reappear anyway. This is obviously being controlled by the Facebook algorithms. I do still get the sites from conservatives that I want in my feed but the algorithm obviously feels that I need to see leftist sites as well.

From Sundance yesterday: "Ms. Haugen appeared today before the U.K. Parliament, again advocating that any speech against globalism and big government is considered extremist speech that much be blocked." Any story from the Washington Post originates from the feds. Always be prepared.

I think I may have visited Fakebook 3-4 times ten + years ago. It held no charm to me then, and since I found out how evil they were, I have it completely blocked on my computer for years. I'd have to go in and edit my 'hosts' file to access it at all. Same with Twitter. However if Lucianne, and Free Republic wanted to mess with my information feed, I guess they could. And also Francis Haugen is not really a whistleblower. She is a Facebook propagandist pretending to be a whistleblowwer in order to spin revelations about Facebooks evil operations from other sources into the least harmful (to FB) light.

Twitter is so bad you can have a lurker account that never does anything and still get shadowbanned. They bombard you with gay and trans followers and if you block them because you don't want that stuff in your feed, the algorithm puts you into exile. The place is horrible. Let these places die.

To echo a lot of the comments here. I'm considered an older person now bur have been on Facebook since the beginning. I hate the company and only keep my account so I might see what an old friend is up to. I didn't even know they had a new feed and if I ever came across it even subconsciously I would never believe it or take it seriously. I think independent minded people are probably Facebook's biggest fear.

I'm on facebook as are many conservatives that I have 'friended'. One is Clarice Feldman who posts links to all kinds of articles of conservative political interest. Also Don Surber. I used to be friended by John Podhoretz until that Never Trumper took umbrage at my comments on his posts and unfriended me... I get 'fact checked' regularly... with the threat that my posts will be less widely shown if I persist (I do). There's a 'Market Place' feature that acts like Craig's List used to and I've sold many items there. With that said, I have no doubt that I don't see everything that I want to... but I don't know what the 'feed' is. Earlier on, it seemed as if they were trying to be a news organization and wanted to steer me to certain posts. They seem to have given up on that.

At least five former Trump administration staffers have voluntarily spoken with the House committee investigating the January 6 attack on the US Capitol, CNN has learned. Those discussions come as lawyers working for the committee have also reached out to a range of other Trump aides to inquire whether they would be interested in speaking with the committee voluntarily, without the threat of a subpoena.

As the U.S. reached another bleak milestone on Sunday, a glimmer of hope from New York: The Empire State reported its lowest positivity rate since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. New York, for weeks the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak, reported the rate — the average number of positive results for every 100 tests — hit a record low 0.78% on Saturday. That figure once reached nearly 47% in early April, although testing was much more limited at the time. The rate had been around 1% since early June.

It was a rare admission when President Trump told The Washington Post last year that he regretted the way he treated his older brother, Fred Jr., who died of alcoholism. But he insisted that a subsequent financial feud with his late brother’s children had been settled amicably, saying, “We all get along.” Now, however, Trump’s niece — the daughter of Fred Jr. — has written a book slated to be published in July that could explode the image of a unified Trump family.

It was probably the worst day of Alec Baldwin's life when he accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie "Rust" on Oct. 21. It's a time to feel terrible about a 42-year-old woman with a husband and a young son. Then, CNN's Jake Tapper used it in one of his commentaries to denounce the entire Republican Party for making this tragedy an occasion for jokes. "There's something about our politics right now that is driving people away from our shared humanity."

Our current secretary of the Treasury, Janet Yellen, is busy trying to find a way to tax wealth without calling it taxing wealth. She has eyes on taxing unrealized capital gains. What this means simply is taxing people for money they have not earned or received. That's it in a nutshell. That definition should leave even those who have never had a course in accounting or finance shaken. Not only is Janet Yellen considering this, but the Democrat party is on board as well.

The reference is to the Thursday slaying of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was hit by discharge from a prop gun while working on the Baldwin film “Rust.” Baldwin, the film’s star, was handling the weapon from which the fatal shot was fired. The movie’s director was injured as well.

Joe Biden is out tonight to speak at the rally for Terry McAuliffe in Virginia. Now, one has to think that McAuliffe is feeling pretty desperate to have Biden out to stump for him. As we previously reported, McAuliffe acknowledged that Biden was not popular in Virginia and that basically they had to work their way around that fact. So he must be just grasping for anything he can having Biden in to speak at this point. I can’t imagine Biden helping him at all. Biden doesn’t have any ability to really draw anyone. He surely doesn’t give an inspiring stump speech.
