ASHBURN, Va. — The bones of one of America’s worst air disasters are finally being laid to rest. But there will be no special grave or burial ceremony for the battered, twisted and fire-scarred chunk of fuselage from TWA Flight 800 which exploded minutes after takeoff 25 years ago this month over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 230 passengers and crew members who were bound for Paris and then Rome. A 93-foot-long, two-story, white, silver and red aluminum and steel section of the doomed Boeing 747 jetliner is about to be chopped and melted into scrap. Or as the National

Pure evil lives here. For a gripping insight into this event, read Nelson DeMille’s Night Fall.

The article fails to mention why it still exists. The wreckage has been used for decades as a training tool for aircraft disaster investigators. It's no longer needed because it has been been scanned for digital 3D modeling.

I didn't know what to believe at the time except that Pierre Salinger was a crackpot. No, the USS Normandy did not bring the plane down. Impossible to keep the entire crew quiet even if it did. Two years earlier USS Lake Erie accidentally fired off two 20mm depleted-uranium rounds while sitting at the pier in Pearl Harbor and it was front-page news the next morning. Having lost nearly all faith in our government in the ensuing 25 years, I'm now of the belief that it probably was a terrorist missile fired from a surface craft in the area but our feckless leadership at the time didn't want to admit it and be forced to take the necessary follow-on action.

For me, the major change in my career started 8 years prior, with Pan Am 103 and was accelerated with TWA 800. The results of that drastic career change have been both satisfying and frustrating, often at the same time. Americans don't know for sure what happened to TWA 800 but a lot of aviation security professionals know what didn't happen and that the Clinton administration pushed aside highly capable investigators from the FAA and NTSB and invented a lie to feed to the public. When a previously honorable NYC supervisory FBI agent clearly drank the Clinton kool aid, I felt shame for the first time in public service. As much as I hate to admit it, the follow-on White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security, aka the Gore Commission, actually did some good things that had nothing to do with the 800 tragedy being an "industrial accident." It was clearly focused on terrorism and following its report to Congress, significant dollars were appropriated for explosive detection technologies and systems R&D and deployment. That may be why the 9/11 hijackers resorted to box cutters to attack commercial aviation.

I believe that TWA 800 was shot down by a missile. Too many people along the coast saw it. I believe there was a cover up due to the fact that the Olympics where about to start in Atlanta and Clinton didn't want anything to disrupt that and he didn't want this attack to happen during his watch.
Nelson DeMille's book Nightfall paints a precursor to the largest attack on U.S soil, it's a must read.
If you ever have a chance, watch a documentary on EPIX (it can be found online) about TWA 800. It's excellent and highlights all of the coverups with proof. It's probably one of the last true journalistic investigations done by liberals. Watch it.

Nelson DeMille's Night Fall is definitely a must read. Also, Jack Cashill has done extensive investigating of this tragedy. His book is eye opening.

When you learn that your government had done things you once thought it would never do, that's a call for reflecting on what it may have done in the past which you dismissed as unlikely if not preposterous, and what it might do in the future which you once thought to be unthinkable.

#5, I don’t think that the coverup had anything to do with the Olympics. In July of 1996 Clinton was in the midst of a re-election campaign and a terrorist attack would have been hugely detrimental to his chances of winning.

Clinton hid the truth because it was an election year. Maybe those poor souls should be added to the Clintons' 'Body Count'.

They spent 25 years scrapping every bit of nitro residue and discarding it.
To paraphrase that lady in Poltergeist. "This plane is clean."

I am in agreement with #3. It was brought down by a missile but not from the USS Normandy. Crews talk and this would not stay hidden for 25 years. I had an email exchange with Jack Cashill and he maintains that a MANPADS didn't have the range. I disagree. At the time, the pedestal mounted Stinger had more oomph to reach the aircraft and trigger its proximity fuse. Two things reinforce my thoughts. First, the FBI immediately went to marinas to check if there were witnesses but also to check the boats themselves to see if they had been out to sea that night. I think the Stinger was weighing heavily on their mind. Second, Tom Clancy of all people, got on the radio and said, "no, no, no! It wasn't a Stinger!" Odd pronouncement from someone who does great research, but is not normally the go to guy for official technical and tactical expertise for investigations of this type. If one examines the actions of the players immediately after the crash, you get more reasonable possibilities than the weeks, months, and years afterward when everything can be massaged and a narrative constructed.

The fuel tank explosion claim is literally impossible. Fuel inside a fuel tank is "too rich" to burn.
Note that essentially all automobiles have fuel tanks with both an exposed electrical fuel level sending unit and an exposed, and fuel-cooled electric fuel pump. And have you EVER heard of a fuel tank exploding unless it was ruptured in an accident? That's because unless the tank is ripped open, admitting a LOT more air, the fuel-air ratio is too "rich" to be ignited. Hard fact.
CIA, NTSB lied to cover up something. The fuel tank could'nt possibly explode. And note that all airliners STILL have electric fuel pumps inside the tanks, just like Flight 800. Nothing was changed, because all those in the industry know that the claim was BS. In a REAL investigation, there are safety changes when the problem is one of aircraft design. No design changes happened.
Clinton's team of fraudsters covered up something, several viable theories still out there, but the one
that they used is a lie.
