The name’s Klain — President Klain. Washington insiders delight in assigning the White House chief of staff this mischievous title as the driving force behind the actual president, Joe Biden. The man himself, Ron Klain, would never describe himself this way, but his firm grip on the levers of government has enabled the 78-year-old president to cruise through his first 100 days in office without breaking sweat. Everybody who is anybody in Washington knows Klain, although few people outside the Beltway — the ring road surrounding the capital — have heard of him. He is a powerful, confident operator who knows the business of government inside out.

Democrats' quest to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state hit a big roadblock this week in the form of a fellow Democrat.
Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., said he opposed Congress alone creating the new state and he believes, like Republicans have argued, that statehood for the nation's capital needs to be done through a constitutional amendment.
"If Congress wants to make D.C. a state, it should propose a constitutional amendment," Manchin said in an interview with the West Virginia MetroNews radio network, according to The Associated Press. "It should propose a constitutional amendment and let the people of America vote."

President Joe Biden, contrary to expectations, said something consequential in his first address to members of Congress…by mistake. It was a whopper that went unnoticed on Wednesday night; with just a few ill-chosen words Biden utterly toppled any justification for the Green New Deal, which plays a central role in his $2.3 trillion American Jobs Plan and which, without a doubt, puts our economy at risk.

More than a dozen House Republicans Friday are questioning Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo on whether there "was any political interference" in the final census numbers used to decide how many House members each state will get for the coming decade. The letter, first obtained by Fox News, is led by Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., the ranking member on the House Oversight Committee.
The Republican House members cited gaps between the number of House seats some right-leaning states were projected to gain -- or some left-leaning states were projected to lose -- and the final results announced this week.

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, returned to his committee duties on Thursday after recovering from eye surgery due to complications of his combat injuries, saying wounds like his are sometimes the sacrifice of military service. Crenshaw got back in the saddle Thursday, returning to the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s climate change subcommittee for a hearing featuring Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan. The Texas Republican had emergency surgery last month to fix a detached retina that occurred due to the injuries he sustained while serving as a Navy SEAL in Afghanistan.

Rep. Liz Cheney said in an interview with Punchbowl News Thursday that she will stand behind her vote to impeach former President Trump "every day of the week" as she faces multiple primary challengers in her 2022 reelection effort. Cheney, R-Wyo., is the chair of the House Republican conference and has taken heat from many on the right over her vocal condemnation of Trump after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by a mob of his followers.
That has spurred Trump's wrath in multiple forums and triggered a handful of Republicans to announce primary challenges to her

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, took PolitiFact to task on Tuesday for rating "False" his claim that Republicans did not try to "rig the game" in the Supreme Court, which he has accused Democrats of doing by seeking to expanding its size to 13.
"Lying liars lie & that's what Politi'fact' does every day," Cruz tweeted. "You didn't see Republicans when we had control of the Senate try to rig the game," Cruz is quoted as saying on April 22. "You didn't see us try to pack the court."
In the fact check, PolitiFact concluded that Cruz's claim was "false" because Republicans blocked former President Obama's Supreme Court nominee Merrick Garland in 2016

Federal investigators have executed a search warrant on former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, seizing electronic devices, according to a report from the New York Times. The raid on Giuliani, who has served as a personal attorney for former President Donald Trump, comes as federal authorities were investigating whether Giuliani violated the law by lobbying the Trump administration on behalf of Ukrainian officials in 2019.

President Biden said he would be "in trouble" if he continued to take questions from reporters during a rare back-and-forth with the press Tuesday afternoon.
After speaking about new federal health guidelines for mask-wearing for vaccinated and non-vaccinated individuals, Biden answered a few shouted questions from gathered reporters at the White House.
"I'm sorry," he said, after listening to questions about his own mask-wearing and a potential summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "This is the last question I'll take, and I'm really gonna be in trouble."

Republicans on the House Administration Committee are calling on Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., to pay the fine for not going through metal detectors to get onto the House floor after her office confirmed that she hadn't used them to access the floor in February. Reps. Rodney Davis, R-Ill., Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., and Bryan Steil, R-Wis., sent a letter to acting House Sergeant-at-Arms Timothy Blodgett requesting he levy fines against the speaker for not following the security protocols all members are required to follow to get to the House floor.
