The Biden administration moved Thursday to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars, fulfilling a key goal of anti-smoking groups who say the products harm minorities while sparking a debate about government overreach and the potential creation of an underground market. Health Secretary Xavier Becerra said the Food and Drug Administration’s decision to kickstart the removal will help “our most marginalized communities” and accelerate the decrease in overall tobacco use. “Tobacco-related death and disease must become a part of America’s past. These public health measures will save lives,” he said. “Banning menthol in cigarettes and flavors in cigars will decrease the appeal of these tobacco products

Comments:

When watermelon blunts and Kools are outlawed, only outlaws will have Kools and watermelon blunts. Why are black people not deeply offended at being labeled “our most marginalized communities," as if they are children tricked by evil advertisers into smoking? FDA could use the same logic to ban fast food, soda, and snacks, and quickly too if they tweak what's allowable for purchase on food stamps.

Yup, what's the logic here? Menthol cigarettes are deadly and must be banned, but marijuana cigarettes are being sold in state dispensaries like there's no tomorrow? I'll bet there's a lot more marijuana in marginalized communities than Menthol cigarettes. Along with free needles for the heavy duty stuff. Their virtue signaling is verrry nuanced.

#11 has it exactly right. This will create a black market (no pun intended) in menthol cigarettes. If you ban something that is in demand, people will find a way. It happened with alcohol during Prohibition, it's still happening with marijuana in some places, and now it will happen with menthol cigs. They never learn.

A New Jersey police chief facing charges of insubordination over multiple accusations, including offering an officer a promotion in exchange for sex with his wife and daughter, should be demoted, a hearing officer has determined. Retired Judge Raymond A. Batten ruled that Vineland Police Chief Rudy Beu, 60, was guilty of insubordination, conduct unbecoming a public employee and neglect of duty as well as other charges. City officials wanted to suspend the chief for 180 days without pay as well as demote him, pressofatlanticcity.com reported. But in the April 23 written decision, Batten recommended that Beu be demoted to deputy chief.
