Major hospitals in New York, Louisiana and other areas hit hardest by the coronavirus outbreak are routinely using hydroxychloroquine on patients hospitalized with COVID-19, though robust evidence on whether it works is weeks, if not months, away. (Snip) UCLA has been advising doctors since mid-March to consider hydroxychloroquine for seriously ill COVID-19 patients. "Our recommendation is based on limiting usage, allowing it as a Hail Mary-type treatment for patients who are very sick," said Dr. Otto Yang, an infectious disease specialist.

Yet the doctors who have tried it at symptom onset in their patients, haven't had to hospitalize them in the US. Same process in France and Italy, they gave it to them before they needed hospitalization. I'm sure there might be a few who wait too long to see the doctor, but sill.
So who are the 'quacks', the ones who say wait until they are almost dead, or the ones who say if they catch it, treat them and skip the hospitalization? Unless they want the money that comes with hospitalization. Which would be despicable.

You know, when you need a blood transfusion, the docs don't wait until you 'very' need it to give it to you.
That might be too late.
How smart are these yahoos, anyway.

Why is HDQ working? Maybe corona virus is not causing Acute Respiratory Distress but rather attacking the red blood cells and that's the reason HDQ is effective.

The timing of when the HCQ is started may be a critical factor. If only very sick patients are being treated it may not be found effective because the virus has already triggered a more severe autoimmune reaction that destroys lung tissue and causes death. Hopefully, some of the clinical trials will find the right dosing and timing for the treatment that has the best results.
I'm actually betting on a new study that started March 11 in China that is using 10mg of Sildenafil for 7 days to block the lung damage by opening up small blood vessels in the lungs. Early trials showed promise and they have started a larger RCT to confirm the benefits. The approach seems to improve oxygen levels, reduce fever, and speed the recovery by giving the immune system a chance to defeat the virus load.

If you're using it now you don't have to wait months to see if it works. Days.

Actually, I miscalculated the dose. They are using .1g for 7 days which is 100 mg or double the normal dose used for ED treatments. Good luck with this study!

Is Reuters about to flip on this issue. Days ago it was a foolish and dangerous medicine. Now hospitals and doctors are split. How much digging did they have to do to find any negative opinions to offset the hundreds of good reports?

Reuters being stupid due to TDS.
The only likely treat from hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin is a possible cardiac contraindication. In that case, doctors are trying another antibiotics. There has also been noticed that lupus patients that are already on hydroxychloroquine do not seem to be getting sick with the virus.
If we wait for the bureaucrats to get their formal approvals, the virus will have long passed its peak claiming many more victims and deaths. So far cardiac problems do NOT seem to have arisen. If hydroxychloroquine is only 10% effective that could have prevented 1500 deaths. 50% effective 7500 lives saved. Plus people NOT ending up in ICU because of milder symptoms. There have been no serious problems noted so far using hydroxychloroquine to treat the virus.
Reuters are idiots. The pompous jerks they quote seem to immune to the reality that people are sick and dying. Let's toss them on the front lines and see if they refuse prophylactic treatment.

FWIW, a research virologist I listened to the other day stated that it could be effectively treating certain symptoms that when held at bay allow for the body to more effectively fight the virus and the azithromycin is probably given to thwart some secondary bacterial infections such as pneumonia.

Here in Milwaukee, a couple’s story was reported on a local talk show. Couple were exposed during a cruise. Husband critically ill, on ventilator. Given Hydroxychloriquine and may be OK by Easter. Wife tested negative for COVID, symptom-free - she was on Hydroxychloriquine for her RA. Why healthcare workers aren’t demanding preventive Hydroxychloriquine, I don’t know!
