A lesbian minister in Nantucket, Massachusetts, is canceling her church’s annual Fourth of July celebrations in an act of political protest apparently against the country’s — as well as her own congregation’s — “whiteness.” Rev. Erin Splaine announced to her community Thursday that the Second Congregational Meeting House Society, Unitarian Universalist church would be canceling its customary July 4th celebrations, which include a public reading of the Declaration of Independence and the Bill of Rights.
