A Northern California woman has died from a snake bite, marking the third death of its kind in the Golden State so far this year. Authorities said the 78-year-old was bitten multiple times by a venomous snake on a rural property in Redwood Valley in Mendocino County on April 8. (Snip) A Costa Mesa man, identified as 25-year-old Julian Hernandez, died after he was bitten by a rattlesnake while mountain biking at Quail Hill Trailhead in Irvine on Feb. 1. A 46-year-old Ventura County woman died five days after she was reportedly bitten by a rattlesnake while hiking a trail

The snakes are reclaiming their territory.

I was almost bitten by a rattler in SoCal many years ago, on Mt. Palomar. Fortunately, I was paying attention and just barely managed to avoid putting my hand where the snake was sunning himself on a ledge. Ya'll be careful out there, nature is natural....which means some of it can kill you.

Redwood Valley is just about a 40-minute drive south from our homestead. We've only seen one rattler in our yard in the last 27 years. TK quickly dispatched it and that was within the first few years of our residence. Every year our dogs are vaccinated against a rattler bite. In fact, next Wednesday is their appointment for this year. There are risks no matter where one lives. I'd rather deal with rural snakes than the urban ones that walk on two legs.

Most everyone has a snake story. I have a grim one. A friend of ours was bitten by a rattlesnake about 20 years ago. This happened near the family cabin in Wyoming. He could not wear a normal shoe for almost a year. Twelve years or so later at the same site, his son sustained a fatal rattlesnake bite.

ATLANTA — U.S. Rep. David Scott, a Georgia Democrat and the first Black chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, has died. He was 80. But he faced criticism and concerns in recent years because of declining health, enduring a primary challenge in 2024 and facing another one at the time of his death. Democrats

MINNEAPOLIS — Restaurants across Minneapolis, from longtime neighborhood staples to newer concepts, are facing mounting financial pressure, and for some, the strain has already proven too much. In 2026 alone, well-known establishments like D’Amico and Sons and The Lowry have announced closures after years of serving the community. Industry leaders warn these losses are part of a broader issue. Hospitality Minnesota recently said restaurants statewide are nearing a “breaking point,” pointing to a mix of lingering pandemic recovery challenges, tariffs, immigration enforcement impacts, economic uncertainty, and new state policies such as paid family leave and rising minimum wages. Following Operation

Democrats Abdul El-Sayed and Mallory McMorrow are neck and neck in new polling on the competitive primary for Senate in Michigan, besting Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Mich.) in the race for a rare open seat. A new Emerson College Polling/WOOD-TV survey found 24 percent of likely primary voters in Michigan each support El-Sayed, the former Wayne County health director backed by progressive Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and McMorrow, a state senator backed by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.). The tied scores represent an 8-point increase in support for El-Sayed since January and a 2-point bump for McMorrow. The poll’s credibility interval for

Far-left Rep. Ilhan Omar blew up at a reporter this week for asking questions about accounting “discrepancies” the Democrat blamed for overstating her net worth by millions of dollars on financial disclosure forms. In May last year, Omar (D-Minn.) claimed she and her husband, Tim Mynett, held assets worth between $6 million and $30 million. However, an amended filing reported by the Wall Street Journal last week put the couple’s wealth at between $18,004 and $95,000. The lawmaker claimed the initial filing was riddled with accounting errors.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for decades has lectured America about the ever-present threat of “hate” groups while raking in hundreds of millions from donors fearful of these organizations. But on Tuesday, the Trump DOJ dropped a bombshell: an 11-count federal indictment charging the SPLC with wire fraud, bank fraud, and money laundering for secretly funneling more than $3 million in donor cash to actual extremists. Among those nefarious payments was a staggering $270,000 allegedly paid to a member of the online leadership chat group that planned the 2017 Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted the United States’ motion for an injunction pending appeal. The court ruled that Section 10 of the No Vigilantes Act (S.B. 805) “attempts to directly regulate the United States in its performance of governmental functions,” violating the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution. California, Governor Gavin Newsom, and Attorney General Rob Bonta are now enjoined from applying or enforcing the provision against federal agencies and officers.
