Is the End of the American Federation
of Teachers in Sight?

A recent poll found that a clear majority of Americans favor limiting politics in the classroom. This is bad news for teachers’ unions, who often advocate against that very thing. Consider the American Federation of Teachers (AFT). With 1.8 million members, the AFT is one of the largest teachers’ unions in the country. It has gained prominence less for advancing classroom outcomes and more for engaging in political activism far removed from instruction. This political activism has been evident recently, as illustrated by AFT president Randi Weingarten speaking at a “No Kings” protest in Minnesota and the organization’s increasing focus on anti-ICE efforts.

Until the union members get tired of paying for political activism instead of teaching, nothing will change. The union protects incompetent teachers and throws lots of perks at their members.

I wonder how many teachers would gladly leave the union if they could? Where my wife taught, teachers had to join to be employed by the county. However, most of the teachers I spoke to felt the union didn't represent them at all.

The AFT isn't the only union. NEA is, for all intent and purposes, just as political.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated Monday that the Trump administration is considering withdrawing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers from international airports located in sanctuary cities. In an interview with Fox News, Mullin said he would “take a hard look” at this measure to punish cities that ban cooperation with federal immigration enforcement, arguing that such municipalities are not lawful and should not receive federal benefits like customs processing while refusing to enforce immigration laws. “I believe sanctuary cities are not lawful. Some of these cities have international airports,” Mullin told Fox host Bret Baier.

Democratic New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has introduced a “racial equity plan” directing city resources to “black and brown New Yorkers” in an attempt to “confront institutional and systemic racism within our city.” The mayor’s policy proposal targets housing, health, and economic opportunities, and seeks to address disparities by prioritizing neighborhoods and residents that have supposedly been historically marginalized by economic or structural factors. Mamdani’s Preliminary Citywide Racial Equity Plan and True Cost of Living Measure prompted a warning from U.S. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who called the measure “fishy” and promised to take a closer look at its legality under current civil rights laws.

Now that President Trump has shut down the border and stopped the flow of new people into blue cities and states, they are not able to maintain their population levels as people flee to better places like Texas and Florida. With smaller populations, these cities and states are going to lose significant electoral power in the present, but even more so in the future. Long term, this is a disaster for them and that is the source for much of their rage. The left tries to frame their anti-ICE protests as a humanitarian issue but it has nothing to do with that.

Hamas remains fully committed to jihad (holy war) and rejects disarmament. The "Board of Peace" is therefore confronting a harsh reality: Hamas, like Iran, is not motivated by deadlines, incentives, or promises of reconstruction. It is motivated by ideology and by war. In Hamas's worldview, the war is not about the Gaza Strip. It is about reshaping the Middle East -- and beyond -- in its own image. Any policy based on the assumption that Hamas can be persuaded to disarm is simply detached from reality. The danger is that this rhetoric is designed to inflame public opinion in Arab and Islamic countries against their own governments,

A Biden-appointed federal judge blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary amnesty for thousands of Ethiopian nationals in the U.S. since 2022. In a ruling on Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Brian Murphy described the Trump administration’s “termination” of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) amnesty for Ethiopian nationals as “unsurprising in light” of President Donald Trump’s executive order, Reuters reported. Murphy also noted that “the will of the President does not supersede that of Congress.” “Fundamental to this case—and indeed to our constitutional system—is the principle that the will of the President does not supersede that of Congress,” Murphy said. “Presidential whims do not and cannot supplant agencies’ statutory obligations.”

The case, focused on the president's use of a decades-old trade law, could have major consequences for U.S. trade policy and executive authority.
