Iran is ramping up its threats as negotiations to end the war appear to be faltering and a U.S. ground operation becomes more likely. Iranian state media outlet Tasnim News Agency, citing a "military source," indicated that Tehran was prepared to close the Bab al Mandeb, a critical waterway linking the Red Sea to the Arabian Sea, in the event of a U.S. ground op. “If the enemy wants to take action on land in the Iranian islands or anywhere else in our lands or to inflict costs on Iran with naval movements in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman,

They had the Houthis doing this about a year ago. Most of those folks are dead, and it seems like the remaining Houthis are not interested in playing "USN vs Houthis" again.

A friend worked in the Middle East and told me one thing about people there and conflict: they are all about saving face. Meaning they have their reputation to defend and no matter how badly they are lising, they will still puff themselves up as the tough guy who is winning to not look bad to others (no matter how bad it's going). Never admit you're losing, only say the other is losing and you will win. Everyone know they are losing but their culture and upbringing is to "save face".

If a single "fast boat" can carry a single, competent anti-ship missile (and each of Iran's 1,500 fast boats carry at least one), and if the Houthis can get even one of such boats close enough to the shipping through Bab Al Mandeb: or: if the IRGC can get a shore-based anti-ship battery close enough: then from the viewpoint of an insurance company, the threat is both real and significant. Game over, the insurers will stop the shipping traffic thru Bab Al Mandeb...until America can guarantee that no Houthi fast boats will pose a threat.

The Minnesota Secretary of State's Office has been served with a federal grand jury subpoena seeking access to certain voter records as part of an investigation into whether non-citizens may have registered or voted illegally, according to sources cited in a report. The probe, led by the U.S. Department of Justice in coordination with the Department of Homeland Security, marks an escalation in a broader dispute between federal authorities and several states over access to voter data and election oversight. No criminal charges have been filed so far. Investigators are looking for information that is linked to more than 125 individuals, a source said.

The Associated Press is running paid public relations advertisements on X and on the wire service’s own website on behalf of Huawei as the blacklisted Chinese telecom behemoth and the CCP seek influence over a key United Nations tech agency. The U.S. government has long pointed to the national security threat posed by Huawei and has sought to limit the firm’s spread inside the United States and around the world. At the same time, the AP took cash from the Chinese company to promote Huawei’s efforts to burnish its image as the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) —

It's troubling that a state would feel the need to pass a law preserving a constitutional amendment. Not that the state feels that way, so much as the fact that there's a reason for them to feel that way. A few years ago, Missouri passed the Second Amendment Preservation Act. Unfortunately, the courts struck it down as unconstitutional. It was worth a try, and considering the way it was written, I think it probably deserved a much kinder take than the courts gave it, but the ruling was the ruling. Missouri lawmakers, not to be deterred, gave it another go. As we now know, it did not turn out well.

Senators approved a compromise measure early Friday to fund most of the Department of Homeland Security through the end of September, taking a major step toward ending the 42-day partial shutdown that has seen hundreds of airport security workers quit after missing paychecks and snarled travel nationwide. The agreement, passed by voice vote before senators departed Washington for a two-week recess for Easter and Passover, will be considered by the House later Friday morning. The last-ditch deal does not include any of the demands Democrats have placed on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) — including that agents be barred from wearing masks and operate under tougher warrant requirements to detain illegal migrants.

What do you call it when a politician tells you to put elections “back on a level playing field” by voting for a redistricting map gerrymandered to give Democrats 10 seats to Republicans’ one? “Lying” doesn’t quite foot the bill. “Rank deception” is closer, but I think this kind of rhetoric calls for the big guns. I’ll settle on “shameless Orwellian gaslighting,” because supporting the Virginia redistricting push in the name of “fairness” involves redefining basic words in the same manner as the oppressive government in George Orwell’s “1984,” and this rhetorical strategy seems designed to make people with rational concerns about the ballot initiative question their sanity. When did getting from point A to point B get so complicated? When the government decided which cars Americans should buy. With the economic and scientific premises behind electric vehicle (EV) mandates collapsing, the EV bubble may burst completely. There is one mandate left to burst: California’s Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) regulation, which requires all new vehicles to be 100 percent electric by 2035, or else automakers get penalized. With the federal repeal of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s Endangerment Finding in February, the government’s formal scientific basis for EV mandates is gone. State governments no longer have a rational scientific basis for requiring EV sales.

Sharks in the Bahamas have tested positive for cocaine, a new study concludes. Researchers from the Bahamas, Brazil, and Chile also found traces of caffeine and painkillers in the sharks. This isn't a shift in lifestyle from the animals, but rather something that's being forced upon them, as marine pollution becomes ever more pervasive. Finding traces of these substances in a tropical place widely seen as idyllic and pristine is concerning – it seems there are vanishingly few spots on Earth where wildlife can escape our influence. "Pharmaceuticals and illicit drugs are increasingly recognized as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in marine environments, particularly in areas undergoing rapid urbanization and tourism-driven development,"
