The gunman, who wasn’t immediately identified, killed two and wounded nine others in their rampage in Providence. A person of interest was taken into custody, but later released.

Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai was found guilty Monday of violating Chinese national security laws, the culmination of a years-long effort on the part of the Chinese Communist Party to punish Lai for his staunch pro-democracy activism. Lai was convicted of conspiracy to collude with a foreign country to endanger national security and conspiracy to publish seditious publications. He previously pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. The two gunmen who opened fire on Australia’s Bondi Beach, where thousands of Jews were celebrating Hanukkah, are believed to be a father-son duo who had a trove of legally owned guns, authorities said. The California State Auditor published a scalding report Friday that is an unvarnished indictment of Governor Gavin Newsom and his administration. The report should have everyone living in California horrified. The Auditor's report finds Gavin Newsom while in his final year as governor, has upended the state's financial structure, compromised public safety, and left the state's infrastructure in far worse condition. (snip) The auditor did not pull any punches, warning that the state is headed toward much worse economic and infrastructure trouble. The next governor will be saddled with Gavin Newsom's statewide catastrophe.

The White House paid tribute to Ella Cook, the college Republican leader named as one of the student victims in the Brown University shooting. "There are no words," said Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt in a post on X. "Thinking of her family and friends, especially her parents. God please bless them." Cook was one of the two people killed after a gunman opened fire in the university’s engineering building during final exams on the Ivy League campus in Providence, Rhode Island on Saturday afternoon. Chaos reportedly erupted in Amsterdam late Sunday night as masked attackers stormed a Hanukkah concert, sending concertgoers into panic. On December 11, a seventh-grader at Horizon Middle School in Moorhead, Minnesota, was detained after another student reported a large bag of fentanyl pills around noon, according to local police. School Resource Officer Jessica Horn detained the student and seized the pills. Approximately 1,500 pills were allegedly in the student’s possession. The juvenile, age 13, was arrested for 1st Degree Possession of a Controlled Substance and transported to the West Central Juvenile Detention Center. His parents were notified. Field tests confirmed the counterfeit M30 pills likely contained fentanyl, with lab results pending; the boy faces first-degree possession charges and was taken to juvenile detention.

ICE Baltimore arrested Kevin Alexis Mendez-Ortiz on Nov. 25, during a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Oxon Hill. At the end of October, the center-left group WelcomePAC published Deciding to Win, a comprehensive exploration of why Democrats lost the 2024 election and what they must do to start winning again.
