Making Automobiles Great Again

Original Article

In all the hoopla about the One Big Beautiful Bill, one provision went completely overlooked—but that provision is now primed to usher in the rebirth of the great American car. Back in 1975, in a panic over the Arab oil embargo and phony predictions that the world was running out of oil, Congress passed the Energy Policy and Conservation Act. That bill gave government bureaucrats the power to set “corporate average fuel economy” standards for cars sold in the U.S. Under the rule, if all the cars sold by an automaker in a given year failed to meet the government’s miles per gallon target, the company would pay massive fines.

Comments:

I had almost forgotten these stupid gas-mileage rules. Their upside is that without them car manufacturers might never have come up with SUVs, particularly the Honda CR-V, which I cherish.

Are we saying cars will once again become user-serviceable? I doubt it. Dealer service departments are a cash cow. There was movement towards diagnostic codes being only accessible by a company dealership. It comes down to money. They want you renting your car, or needing a new one every 5-7 years, mileage mandates or not.

Wonder how long it will take for the automobile industry to start making cars consumers really want? I've been putting off buying a car because want something super simple...less that can go wrong. Will wait a bit longer and see what happens.

To make automobiles great again, go back to building stuff like 1958 model Oldsmobiles, but outfit them with modern drive trains and brakes, suspension etc.

Relaxing fines for not meeting CAFE standards (set at 54 mpg under Obama - holy, moly) is one thing. Now move on to regulations (e.g. the Chicken Tax - already resolved but still remains), emissions and safety. I'd buy a Toyota Helix (a bare bones small pickup sold around the world for around $12k - we're talking standard transmission and steering, maybe a heater, and an AM radio) right now for put-putting around town if they were sold in the US. But they aren't for several reasons, the big one being US automakers can't compete with foreign made small pickups because of regulations and standards put on our industry.

GM and Ford have stopped making cars. The cars they made before were poor quality, Overpriced due to unions, and the dealerships rude. They acted like all they had to do was advertise, and that is where they invested all their money. At least half of anything called American built is built from parts made in other countries. I don't see American cars coming back anytime soon, even with a tariff. Look at the CEO's of GM and Ford, and there is no way these companies are going anywhere, but bankrupt.

The fuel economy rules have been steadily destroying us cars and trucks for 25 year or more. Just eliminate ANY government input on fuel economy. WE, the People, will figure it out and buy WHAT WE WANT without government nanny state, fake 'carbon pollution' and other climate lies involved. Sadly, I doubt that car makers will react within the next five years. They have huge investments in the current crap cars, and to go back would be expensive. I am essentially certain that they will fear going back, lest the political winds change again and they be whiplashed into going back to strangled cars. Only if these rules stay free for four or five years will things SLOWLY start to go back to normal, unfortunately. Car makers won't jump at this, I am pretty sure. Sad to say.

Herman Cain lives! The late great Republican Tea Party leader, CEO, and former chairman of the Kansas City Federal Reserve was derided in his 2012 presidential campaign for his "Chilean Model" proposed during a debate -- a plan to replace the failing Social Security system with private accounts, as had been done in Chile in the 1970s. In reality, he had an enduringly good idea that would have saved the rapidly depleting U.S. Social Security system just as it saved Chile's, and made every saver in the U.S. richer. But the left demonized it without a hearing, (Snip) Now President Trump has picked up the torch.

Last year, California scientists sparked outrage with a botched test on an old aircraft carrier, spraying saltwater to create artificial clouds and block sunlight. The tiny Alameda trial lasted just 20 minutes before furious city officials yanked the plug, slamming the team for zero advance notice. The team responsible were involved with the Marine Cloud Brightening Program based in the University of Washington. Now documents exposed by Politico, through an open records request to the University of Washington, reveal they plotted a far bigger gamble: a multimillion-dollar ocean experiment covering an area larger than Puerto Rico, aimed at cooling the planet.

A look back at the original cartoon series shows just how much that rabbit reflected the culture. On July 27, 1940, the wisecracking, mouthy bunny with a Brooklyn accent got his official start in the Looney Tunes classic “A Wild Hare,” in which he bamboozles and confuses the most unsuccessful and hapless hunter in American history, Elmer Fudd, for the first of many times.

Among the climatically correct, nothing is more scandalous than describing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions as beneficial. You can be blacklisted from public forums, professional networking sites, and even be removed from your tenured university position as an accomplished scientist. Nonetheless, the truth is this: CO2 is fundamental to the photosynthetic process by which plants make food for themselves -- and ultimately for us. Furthermore, the increase in atmospheric CO2 from industrial activity in the past century has helped vegetation over most of the planet to flourish. Also benefiting plants has been the relative warmth of recent decades. Among the beneficiaries are fruit plants, whose sensitivity to cold is well established.

These are dark days,” Biden told the crowd of nearly 1,100 members of the predominantly Black legal organization. The remarks echoed, at least in tone, some of his

If Hegseth were to follow through on the discussions, it would amount to a major leadership shake-up at the department that oversees the American military and millions of federal employees. The Defense Department bars civilian employees from running for political office, meaning Hegseth would have to resign to do so. In a statement, Sean Parnell, the Pentagon’s chief spokesman, said, “Hegseth’s focus remains solely on serving under President Trump.”
